An Interview with Cheryl Dragon
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Cheryl, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured work, 9 1/2 Years.
CD: 9 1/2 Years is the story of Lisa and Eric, two cops with a strong attraction. But the age difference has been her excuse. When Eric pushes for more and ends up working a case with her, they have to deal with their issues, rank, and just how amazing their sexual chemistry is!
HH: This is part of the Oh Yum! series at Ellora's Cave. What can you tell us about this series' theme and why were you drawn to it? CD: Oh Yum is about Older Women and Younger Men. The recent trend in this is all over Hollywood. Strong sexual attraction and true love with an age difference makes it an Oh Yum. I was drawn by the unique challenges a relationship like this could pose in certain settings. If both people are police officers, for instance, now you're mixing in rank as well as live and death issues!
HH: Your main characters are two head strong officers of the law but your hero has grown tired of waiting for his lady to realize he's what she needs. Where did you get the idea for this sizzling story? CD: The idea came from a friend who believed in a ten year rule. Never date anyone ten years older or younger than you. When I heard about the Oh Yum series, I immediately thought of the ten year rule and gave that belief to my heroine. Now Mr. Right has to do the math and be only nine and a half years younger and her rule goes out the window and he's in hot pursuit.
HH: What did you enjoy about writing a story with a younger man? What challenges did you face? CD: A hot younger man after a smart and strong woman can't be a bad time:) The real trick was balancing their maturity levels. Neither is immature for their age but an average thirty-year-old won't have the same experience or perspective as an average thirty-nine and a half year old. Making those subtle distinctions without having either character appear in the wrong was a fun challenge!
HH: What drew you to erotica/erotic romance as a writer? CD: The freedom! The only things I can't/wouldn't write are gross or illegal. Beyond that, I can write the characters I want and the real fantasies, experiments, and wild times people want to experience.
HH: How do you think its fairing in today's market? CD: A recent Publisher's Weekly article featured erotic romance so I take that as a great sign it's a thriving market. Trends come in and out but I think sex sells and readers want the hot stuff. The popular sub-genres in erotic romance will trend in and out but there will always be an audience looking for great erotic romances!
HH: With so many erotic tales out there, the pressure is on to be creative and original to stay competitive. How do you feel you accomplish this? CD: The biggest competition is always with myself. I crave writing the new twists and fresh spins. Of course I have to promote so people know when new books are out, but the writing is the best way to stay in the game. If you don't have a new book out, you can't compete. So I try to stay a book or two ahead so I can set up the promotion and have it there on my website so people can find the coming soon titles and the released ones.
HH: What's your schedule like between writing, promotion, and everything else you have to do as a writer? CD: I also have a day jo so my schedule generally revolves around that. Promo updates and emails before work, editing or drafting at lunch, after work more writing and editing plus any promo/chat work needed. I do a lot on the weekends but setting a schedule for writing really isn't possible. I try to write a couple projects ahead of my releases so I know what I need to promote and can plan ahead on those items. I do schedule my promotion ahead of time so I can work around something.
HH: What do you enjoy reading? CD: Right now, I'm loving paranormals. Shifters, aliens...whatever! Those are fun and anything is possible. I try to read what I'm not writing at the time so while I work on my m/m contemp, straight paranormal is perfect!
HH: What can readers look forward to from you in the near feature? CD: I have two releases in July.
July 1st is Hypnotic Hannah from Loose Id.
