Mechele Armstrong

Rose Winters made a bet with her lover that she can get three relationships together and prove to him that she can be the next drag queen Dear Abby. It's a gamble but she's going to get Neo and Phil together and isn't afraid to play dirty to do it.

Phil was once Neo's dream of a guy but then he took off the morning after their one night stand. Unlike other guys, Neo wasn't sure he wanted temporary with Phil, but that's what it turned into. He's determined he won't give Phil the chance to hurt him again.

Phil had just tiptoed out his sexuality when he and Neo had a night, but problems in his family led him to shove it back in the closet, leaving Neo in the dust. Phil regrets the past but knows he'll never make it up to an angry Neo.

Until Rose steps in.

But can Rose's gamble tip them back into a relationship, or will the same factors that tore them apart to begin with rear their ugly heads again?

An Interview with Mechele Armstrong
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Mechele, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Winter's Gamble. What can you tell us about this sizzling erotic romance?

MA: Winter's Gamble was such a fun book to write. Rose Winter (a drag queen) makes a bet with her lover, Carl, that she can bring three relationships together and prove to him that she can write a love advice column for a local magazine. In Winter's Gamble, she seeks to bring together Neo (a dancer in Rose's show) and Phil (a bartender) who had a one night stand they've never forgotten but Phil walked away due to some family drama and Neo has never forgiven him. Rose works behind the scenes to get the two of them talking and then more than talking.

HH: What do you like best about Phil and why will readers be cheering for him?

MA: I like Phil because he knows he screwed up. He has no illusions that Neo shouldn't be mad at him. He's also very loyal to family, which led to him inadvertently hurting Neo. I think anyone can sympathize with a mistake and also knowing that Phil wants to rectify it will have readers cheering him on.

HH: What can you tell us about Neo and why will readers love him?

MA: Neo is very sexy and self assured, except when it comes to Phil. He was hurt once before and doesn't want to give Phil that power again until he trusts him. I think anyone can understand that and be urging him to get back into the game with Phil.

HH: Tell us about Rose Winter. <g>

MA: I adore Rose Winter! Rose is the one who will say what everyone else is thinking but no one else will say. She's fun to write. She's brash. She's bold. She's talented. She has an ego the size of Texas. Did I mention I adore her? She's a woman who doesn't mind being the B word and tries to honestly own that word.

HH: What did you enjoy most about crafting this tale?

MA: I enjoyed the play between the characters. They each had their own voice and there were a lot of fun scenes to write. Rose is just absolutely fun to craft and when she plays with Neo and Phil, they came off the pages to me and lived in my head. There's a scene with Phil and Neo that just really played sexily in my head. I'm hoping that it came across the page like that.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

MA: The second book, Winter's Dare has just been contracted by Loose Id. The fact that it's a m/f makes Rose have to stretch a little and we get to see Devyn, her alter ego a lot more than we did in the first book. I enjoyed exploring him and also Tucker and Ally, Devyn's best friends from college. I've started the third book, which is an even bigger challenge for Rose, a m/m/f and also will wrap up some happenings between Rose aka Devyn and his lover, Carl. When I submit the third book, I also wrote a novella that chronicles Devyn aka Rose and Carl getting together and I plan to submit it at the same time I submit the third book. It was fun to write, to go back into their past and see the relationship develop. I definitely have had fun with this trilogy.

HH: Where do you draw inspiration from?

MA: Inspiration strikes from all over. In Rose's case, she's very loosely based on a real drag queen, who sings instead of lip syncing. I found the world absolutely fascinating and definitely wanted to explore it, hence creating Rose. Sometimes a song will inspire me. Or just a thought of "what if." It's always odd where the inspiration comes from.

HH: What's your writing schedule like?

MA: I used to have a rigid writing schedule. But due to some family issues, I've had to become a lot more flexible. I write best in the mornings and when the house is quiet, but lately I write whenever I can and wherever that happens to be.

HH: Where can readers find you online?

MA: Readers can find me at which chronicles all of my books and what I'm working on.

HH: What's your favorite place to hang out online?

MA: Uh...I used to hang out a lot on blogs and do a lot of other things. Since the family issues came about, I've really not established myself again online. I need to get back into blogging and twitter and other things. I do really like Facebook and the options for staying in touch.

HH: Thank you!
