Karenna Colcroft

Environmental consultant Cassidy Sheridan loves to hate Jared Jackson, her coworker and the son of the owner of the construction company for which they work. She considers him arrogant and annoying. She also finds him incredibly attractive, but that isn't something she's willing to admit.

On an overnight business trip, Cassidy can no longer deny her desire for Jared, and realizes that the “to hate” part of her feelings for Jared no longer applies. And Jared feels the same way.

About Karenna Colcroft

Karenna Colcroft has been writing since she was five years old. In 2006, a friend challenged her to write an erotic romance scene. Karenna took the challenge and was hooked. For a few years, she wrote for her own entertainment and occasionally posted stories online while she improved her writing skills. Since 2009, she has had several erotic romance e-books published by companies including Pink Petal Books, Noble Romance, and Siren Publishing. Seeds of Desire is her first release from Ellora's Cave. Karenna lives in the northeastern US with her two children, her real-life romance hero husband, and two cats, one of whom sometimes reads over Karenna's shoulder. Fortunately, the cat is over 18 in cat years…

An Interview with Karenna Colcroft
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Karenna, thank you so much for talking with us. Your featured book is Seeds of Desire. Where did you get the idea for this sexy modern tale?

KC: Ah, the dreaded "where do your ideas come from" question. LOL. Seriously, I'm not entirely sure where the idea came from. A couple years ago, I wrote stories that I posted on a free story site. The site had annual contests around certain holidays and events, including Earth Day. In 2009, I decided to write something for that contest and came up with the basic plot of Seeds of Desire. While I was writing the story, I decided to stop posting on that site, so I never submitted the story for the contest. I held onto it for a while, then in 2010 decided to expand it into a novella.

HH: What do you like best about Jared and why will he appeal to romance readers?

KC: Jared comes across as cocky and sure of himself, but he has a softer side that he eventually reveals to Cassidy.

HH: What do you like best about Cassidy and why do you think readers will relate to her?

KC: Cassidy has worked hard to get where she is career-wise, and isn't afraid to go after what she wants.

HH: In a market full of sexy romances, how do you make your works stand out?

KC: I create strong, realistic characters whom the reader comes to know as they read. The saying is that there are no original plots, but I put my own spin on the plots I write and hopefully come up with something that's at least a little different from what readers might have seen previously.

HH: What do you think today's romance reader is looking for?

KC: I think readers want characters they can relate to. Even if a character isn't human, as is the case in many paranormal romances, readers want to be able to feel some common bond with the people they're reading about. Readers also want strong plots and realistic situations, where "realistic" means believable and well thought-out. Something that shows the author has taken time creating their characters and the universe those characters live in, whether it's contemporary, paranormal, science fiction, or something else altogether.

HH: What else do you have in the works for lucky readers?

KC: Quite a few things. On February 3, 2011, Pink Petal Books will release my novella You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This, an erotic contemporary about two West Coast Swing dance instructors who fall in love. On March 3, again from Pink Petal, my novel Their Home Port will be released. Their Home Port is also erotic contemporary, about a woman who takes a job in the office of a marine assistance towing company and falls in love with one of the captains. Both of those stories have a special place in my heart, because my husband is a former West Coast Swing instructor who works as a marine assistance towing captain. In late winter/early spring, Ellora's Cave will release my Quickie "Hear Me, See Me," about a woman whose boyfriend takes her to a swingers' party to help her overcome her fear of being heard during sex. I recently signed a contract with Passion In Print Press for my MFM contemporary novel Shiny Objects, and I currently have my first M/M romance and a fantasy romance novella under consideration. As for works in progress, I'm putting the finishing touches on a contemporary reunited-friends-to-lovers novella and have a few other things brainstormed but not started yet.

HH: Karenna, why did you want to be a writer? Why do you still?

KC: Honestly, I can't remember a time I didn't want to be a writer. When I was two or three years old, I started making up stories and telling them to my parents and my stuffed animals. I loved being read to and learned to read at about age three, and I knew then that someday I wanted to see my stories in books like the ones I read. My first fiction publication didn't come until early 2009, when I was 38 years old, and now that I've been published and continue having things accepted, I love writing partly because of the thrill of getting a contract, but mostly because it's so fascinating to watch my imagination come to life on my computer screen.

HH: If you weren't a writer, you'd be a...?

KC: Corpse. I don't think I'd ever not be a writer as long as I'm alive.

HH: What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

KC: The teen TV series Degrassi. It's a Canadian series, broadcast here in the US on the cable channel TeenNick. Kind of a soap opera for kids. When I was in high school, back in the 1980s or so, Public Broadcasting started showing episodes of Degrassi Junior High, later Degrassi High, also a Canadian series, and I really liked watching it because it depicted fairly realistic teen situations. In the early 2000s, the company that made those shows kicked off a new series, which I discovered in 2004 and got hooked on. Now I watch it with my kids.

HH: What is your biggest hope for 2011?

KC: That I'll continue improving my writing craft and moving along in my goal to be able to earn enough through writing that I won't have to work part-time anymore. I also hope to find a publisher for a couple of paranormal-with-romantic-elements projects that I've completed but haven't found homes for yet.

HH: Thank you!
