Sherri Desbois

A promise broken

Losing her family at a young age, and then broken promises from the man she'd loved all her life, Charlie McCarty rarely allows anyone to get close to her. Resolved to live her life without love and determined to become a top-notch Veterinarian, she begins her residency in Redfield. Fate, however, has a way of stepping in to change even the most obstinate set plans and forces Charlie to face her past, push the boundaries of her control and her heart to the brink of destruction.

A passion fueled desire

It started out as a celebration, a chance for Charlie to let her hair down and just let go of her firm control for just one evening, but meeting a sexy as hell cowboy—and his familiar best friend——ambush everything. With relentless determination, both cowboys set out to show her that she is everything they want to complete their lives. Charlie begins to dream, once again, for the future she thought lost to her years ago.

Reviews for Half Hearts

5 stars and top pick from The Romance Reviews

"This debut novel by Sherri Desbois absolutely knocked my socks off!! There are things that I love in my novels. I love romance, I love alpha males who are ga-ga over their women, I love erotic loves scenes, and I love plots and characters that grab hold of you and won't leave you even after you finish reading the book. It's rare, but when I have all of those things together, I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. And that's how I would describe the experience I had reading HALF HEARTS by Sherri Desbois...heavenly."

About Sherri Desbois

Half Hearts is my first attempt at writing. I wrote this book as a challenge to myself. Never imagining that I would send it out for viewing let alone get a contract for it. It took nearly a year to complete, sending it to 3 publishers without anyone besides myself reading it. Liquid Silver Books looked past my type O's and run on sentences and saw the story beneath. I will forever be grateful to my editor Tracey, she paid me the highest of compliments when she said. (when talking about Half Hearts) "I confess, I shed a few tears".

An Interview with Sherri Desbois
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Sherri, thank you so much for talking with us. Your featured book is Half Hearts. Where did the idea for this emotionally charged tale?

SD: The characters basically wrote this story. I sat down and had an idea where I wanted the story to go. With no experience to draw from or any clue how to write a book, I sat down and wrote out all three characters bios, where they were born, their childhood lives, their fears and their dreams. Then I started the story and it went places that I never dreamed it would go. It didn't end the way I thought it would. I was more of the pen writing down the journey they took me on.

HH: What do you like best about Charlie and why will readers relate to her?

SD: I think what I like best about Charlie is that even though she has lost everyone in her life she has ever loved, she still moved on. Not ever having a long term committed relationship other than the "love" she had for Kegan as a young teen she is very naive when it comes to romance but she isn't weak. When she realizes Kegan wants her back in his life she doesn't just fall into his arms and forgive all. She grows and learns about herself and the men in her life.

HH: What can you tell us about her two cowboys and why will readers love them?

SD: Like Charlie my cowboys have had some kind of pain in their pasts that have left them broken in some way. Kegan was so brutally abused yet he is such an amazingly sweet soul. Trevor was raised by a power hungry father that had little time for him. Though he is nothing like his father, he did learn one thing from the man and that was his confidence. When Trevor wants something Trevor gets it and what he wants above all other things is Charlie and Kegan. I think the one thing that stands out and will make a reader fall in love with the cowboys is that they are both very strong Alpha Males and yet they have the ability to be tender, caring and nurturing. Not to mention extremely sexy!

HH: This is your first title. What can you tell us about making that first sale?

SD: You know it's funny. I was anticipating release day not for the "sale" but the idea of going from contracted author to published author. It was the most amazing feeling. I knew my family would buy my book. The most exciting thing for me was my first review. It was a 5-star and a Top Pick. I laughed, cried, screamed and danced. One of those top 10 moments in my life!!

HH: How has being published changed things in for you in your writing career?

SD: Well, here's the thing. I never really thought about a "writing career" prior to writing Half Hearts. Believe it or not I didn't even read fiction, other then the ones I was forced to read in College. My oldest daughter kept ranting and raving about a sparkling vampire. I took her to see the movie, came home and read the book. By the end of the week I had read all four and moved on to more adult themed books and greedily read as many as I could. After a spell of one unimpressive book after another I thought; "How hard can this be?" Turned out it was extremely hard and only the love of my characters kept me at it. I was always looking for my place in life. After writing and publishing Half Hearts, I think I finally found it

HH: What else do you have in the works for lucky readers?

SD: I just finished another ménage story called The Essence of Competition that is now sitting with a beta reader and proof reader. I hope to have it submitted in the next couple of weeks. After threats of being chained to my desk by my editor and lashes from a whip from my critique partner, I have given in to their demands and am now working on Rae and Cades story. I've entitled it Harnessed Hearts. A wild child may not be able to be tamed but that naughtiness can be harnessed. I have also started the rough draft for a sequel to Half Hearts. The first book was how they became a ménage. In the sequel I want to explore how they make their relationship work. I want to see where the story goes, especially how Kegan and Trevor deal with their growing and changing relationship.

HH: How do you balance a writer career with the rest of your life?

SD: There is no such thing as balance. I just roll with the flow. My husband and I are the proud parents of the Brady Bunch. Three boys and three girls. Living with three teenage girls? Trust me there is no balance for that. I survive by being completely insane!!

HH: If you weren't a writer, you'd be a...?

SD: I worked in the medical field for many years. I also have a degree in History so I think I would probably be teaching world history if I wasn't writing.

HH: What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

SD: If I like something I'll try it again. If I like it a lot, I'll keep trying it. If it's pleasurable enough I won't even feel a twinge of guilt!

HH: What is your biggest hope for 2011?

SD: My biggest hope for 2011 is that Half Hearts wasn't a fluke. A one hit wonder. I hope that I can continue writing books that people will enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing them.

Thank you so much for allowing me to talk about Half Hearts. Your questions were great and really gave me a venue to express what I loved most about my characters and their story.

HH: Thank you!
