An Interview with Calista Fox
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Calista, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Irish Heat and it has all of the intrigue that as a reader, I love.<g> Where did you get the inspiration for this sizzling tale?

CF:I’m so happy to be here! Irish Heat is actually part of a series I wrote with Berkley Sensation author Erin Quinn and Harlequin author Mary Leo. We started with a series of ghost stories last Halloween, that did very well, and that set us up for a Secret Santa series, a Valentine’s Day series and then the Irish series. All of the books have done extremely well and are Amazon bestsellers. Irish Heat is a #3 Amazon bestseller, and it’s still selling well because it’s not necessarily a St. Patty’s Day story, as the cover might suggest. (And isn’t that cover model an absolute hunk?!)

The inspiration for my story in the series comes from a bit of Irish folklore and mystique. It starts out in Chicago, where my undercover detective hero is wrapping up a big case when his cousin drops dead from an Irish death curse. This spurs a lot of activity and leads Rourke back to his secluded and mystical hometown of Talamh an Óir, the land of gold. The misty Irish countryside is a fantastic place to write about, and I enjoyed basing a story there.

HH: What can you tell us about Rourke and what makes him unique among your heroes?

CF: Hands down, Rourke is one my favorite heroes! He was really easy to write, despite his complexities. His personality, goals and conflicts sprang to life when I was writing the story because he’s such a stand-up guy. He’s driven and doesn’t ever let anything stand in his way. He’ll put his life on the line to ensure justice is served, and he’s not afraid to admit when he’s wrong.

Above all that, he’s extremely passionate and knows how to give his heart to a woman. He’s just...dreamy. What else can I say? *sigh*

HH: What can you tell us about the lady he meets and why she'll drive him crazy?

CF: Shea is Rourke’s only true love. They were destined to be together from the time they were kids, but circumstances beyond their control tore them apart, then brought them back together, only to have them ripped from each other’s arms again. Shea is beautiful and independent and smart, and hopelessly devoted to Rourke, despite the fact it’s so difficult for them to get together. Unfortunately, she’s under a spell that allows her to invoke a death curse that can kill Rourke if they’re not careful. Makes for a touchy, though rather explosive, situation when these two finally met up again!

HH: What sort of research was required to bring your story to life?

CF: I was fortunate in that Erin Quinn had a lot of knowledge of our fictitious location in Ireland. The mood and setting were fun to create because I pored over photos of the Irish countryside to get a feel for the land and the pictures were beautiful and sometimes even haunting.

The road that leads into Talamh an Óir was inspired by a road I traveled in Scotland a few years ago. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding at Edinburgh Castle and the first few days I was in Scotland, I stayed out at resort in the country. Getting there was a real treat! The road we took that transitioned from the city to the country was literally a tunnel of foliage and I used that description for the road into Rourke’s birthplace.

HH: What else do each of you have in store for lucky readers?

CF: We’ve been tossing around ideas for another series that we’re thinking of writing over the summer. In the meantime, I’m working on a very sexy series called Playing with the Boys that I anticipate will be released this spring/summer. It’s written under my alter ego, Ava McKnight. I’m also finishing two stories set in Paris, following a trip I took last fall. Those two books are written under Calista Fox, and they’ve been wonderful to write because they take me back to Paris and all the amazing things I experienced there. I hope to have them released this year as well.

HH: How has the romance genre changed since you began writing?

CF: I wrote my first novella in 2004 and it was on bookshelves in 2005. Since that time, I’ve seen more previously taboo subjects and romance scenarios once deemed “erotic” become more of a mainstay in books not labeled as erotica. I think Sex and the City had a lot to do with bringing steamier romances to fiction, and I’m sure the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon will do the same.

Changes in the publishing industry have also been interesting. I’ve become increasingly grateful to have nine books in print, because there’s nothing quite like seeing your own book on shelves! However, I’m also an e-book addict. I absolutely love the ease and speed of downloading a book to my e-reader. So, I’ve really been into digital press and the cool new innovations that have come about since I started in the business. I’m also thrilled to see readers adapt to the change in publishing. I know it’s not the same as holding a book in your hands, but when you can carry thousands of books around with you...that’s just awesome!

HH: What changes in the market please you most?

CF: I’m glad to see paranormal stories are still so popular, but I also feel like the mainstream market is due for a fantastic explosion, and I’ve been gearing my upcoming work toward that market. Young Adult has become hugely popular, too, and I do like some of the new titles out there. Hard to write it, though! I prefer the ability to incorporate a hot romance with my storylines!

HH: What sources of inspiration do you draw from for ideas?

CF: For me, inspiration is everywhere. I never lack for story ideas. In fact, sometimes I think I have too many ideas. It’s difficult to keep up with all the storylines in my head. I overhear snippets of conversations that trigger an idea, or I travel somewhere and the location speaks to me and I come up with all sorts of scenarios. In fact, I would say traveling is probably the key to what inspires me most.

HH: What's your favorite book so far in 2012?

CF: I had to read The Hunger Games! Very gripping. Now I have to see the movie!

HH: What are you most looking forward to in 2012?

CF: It’s off to a great start and I hope it continues down this path. There are a lot of great books out this year that I’m dying to find the time to read. On a personal note, I’m looking forward to a trip to Cancun and one to Nova Scotia. No telling what sort of story ideas I’ll come up with while I’m there! I hope everyone else is having a great 2012!
