An Interview with Kacey Hammell
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Kacey, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Your featured book is Awakenings. This is part of your In The Arms of the Law series. What do you like best about this series and how it has evolved?

KH: I love the recurring characters, their bonds (familial & friendships), dedication to the job and the familiarity -- sense of home -- I feel whenever I revisit the characters. I’d love the series to be the full nine books I originally planned, but I’m not 100% sure about that just yet. I know I would like to write more short stories in between the full-length titles.

HH: How does Awakenings add to the series and what sets it apart from the other stories in the series?

KH: Awakenings added finality for Alicia, and for me. Her ordeal in book one was traumatic for us both. It also brought forth more characters of the series, allowed us to get some of those that we met in book one, and gave me room to possibly write a spin-off series so to speak from it. More details about that at another time.

HH: What do you like about Alicia and what's her greatest strength?

KH: Alicia’s greatest strength…it’s been so tough for her to find herself after such hardship. I would say forgiveness and her passion for helping those in need are her greatest strengths. She’s really a strong woman, who suffered doubts about herself, but rose above it all.

HH: What do you like best about Cole and why will readers love him?

KH: Cole is a man’s man who will do anything for those he loves. He raised his three siblings after his parent’s deaths when he was young adult, and will do whatever he can to protect them all. With Alicia, he’s devoted, loves unconditionally and will do whatever he can to see that she’s never hurt again. I think readers will love his loyalty, protectiveness and determination in doing what is right.

HH: Which of these stories is your personal favorite?

KH: Not fair! I cannot answer that to be honest. I learned a lot from the series so far. Isabella & Alicia helped me through some difficulties and I healed thanks to them too. To name a favorite would just be unfair!

HH: Which was the hardest to write and why?

KH: They both were. Isabella (in Illusions) was a fiery redhead (who many say takes after me) who wouldn’t let anything slide from anyone. Very opinionated, strong-willed and relentless, there were moments I wanted to strangle the voice in my head LOL

Alicia, tormented, distrusting of herself, tortured, yet down deep still yearning for love. She needed to believe in herself again and accept that what happened to her wasn’t her fault – whether she was a cop or not! I identified with her a lot in having to trust herself again, as something personal in my own life was similar; it was hard to push back some memories and pain. Each had its own ups and downs, tumultuous moments, but I learned to work through it all, thanks to the characters.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

KH: There are two short stories available and part of Decadent Publishing’s “The Edge” line that is connected to this series. TIED DOWN revisits Brady & Bella. In addition, WILD THUNDER (which releases Oct 2) features Alicia’s partner, Ethan.

Plus, I have DARE from Evernight Publishing, which is now available as well from all online bookstores.

In December, Evernight will be releasing my Christmas story, A Ghost for Christmas.

HH: What are you most excited about in your career right now?

KH: The stories available, and upcoming, the WIPs and even more voices in my head. Everything is going well and I’m eager to just type away and share the stories with readers.

HH: What are you looking forward to most in the rest of 2012?

KH: See above -- everything has been great in 2012, I hope to have some good news to start 2013 with more contracted works!

HH: Do you have a writing hero and if so, who would it be?

KH: Oh gosh, I have to say there are two who thrill me with every written word and every character. JD Robb & Cherry Adair. Both are brilliant and exciting writers. I can only hope they have a million more stories in store for all of us!

HH: Thank you!
