An Interview with Kacey Hammell
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Kacey, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Dare. Where did the idea for this thrillingly unique story?
KH: I had dinner with some old schoolmates one evening. The 10 of us got to talking about pranks/dares from high school. After thinking on those memories a few more days after that, I thought I’d do something fun, hopefully exciting, that might make some readers remember the fun times like we had.
HH: What do you like about Olivia and what's her greatest strength?
KH: Her motherly feelings toward her friends. She’s a fixer, a caretaker. She needs/wants to ensure happiness and well-being for those who are in her life. She’ll usually put others before herself.
HH: What do you like best about Dare and what makes him different than most heroes?
KH: He’s laid-back, will go after what he wants but won’t push anyone into anything they don’t want to do. He has Alpha hero qualities and Beta as well. A quiet, reserved man. Similar to Olivia, he is someone who always puts others before himself.
HH: How did you go about creating the world where their story takes place?
KH: I centered the world around Olivia & Dare, whose paths cross because of the Boston law firm they both work for -- she’s legal secretary & he’s a P.I. who works cases for them -- as well as the main people who surround Olivia. The main focus of the story is Olivia, it was her story to tell so only those intricate in her life were necessary.
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story?
KH: The relationship between Olivia & Dare. They’ve eye-balled one another for a long time, glances across the room, sexual interest that neither of them were ready to act on right away. They have a mutual respect for one another because of the law firm, but their interactions when they do come together was charged and so much fun. They were simply perfect for each other -- in and out of the bedroom.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
KH: Connected to Dare? I’ve had many readers ask about 2 of Olivia’s friends -- Candy & Holly. I’m leaning toward doing a story for each -- especially Candy. Because of the interaction she had with Dare, he’s determined that she get her “just desserts” and be put through the preverbial romance wringer *g*
HH: What are you most excited about in your career right now?
KH: The three WIPs that are constantly swirling in my mind. The characters are very vocal and demanding. It's hard to ignore them. Plus, I'm excited for the outlines for future WIPs, and watching reader's reactions to the stories currently available. Reviews and reader emails are coming in, which always make me smile (most of them! LOL), and it's an amazing feeling to know people are reading my stories.
HH: What are you looking forward to most in the rest of 2012?
KH: See above, but also the Christmas story that will release sometime in December with Evernight Publishing -- “A Ghost for Christmas”. It was a fun story to write. I hope readers will love Sebastian. He’s a devilishly charming ghost!
HH: What are you reading at the moment?
KH: Though I usually read the author within a few hours, it’s been hard to find reading time lately. I’m about a quarter way through Jaci Burton’s “Playing to Win”.
HH: Do you have a writing hero and if so, who would it be?
KH: Along with Jaci Burton, it would have to be Cherry Adair. Both authors continually impress me with their stories and make me fall in love with each of their heroes no matter how many times I read each adventure!
HH: Thank you!
