An Interview with Felicity Heaton
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Felicity, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Covet and it's the first in your new Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series. What can you tell us about this new series?
FH: It’s very hot. It’s a series about four vampires who have spent the past century running an erotic theatre together that caters exclusively to their kind. There are different levels of vampire in this world. The aristocrats are from families with pure blood, no turned humans in their ranks diluting their power, and they pride themselves on their purity and can be a little arrogant because of it. The elites are from families that have turned humans in them. Vampires are either turned humans or they’re born to vampire parents. Not many humans know that vampires exist, and most of those are either turned or they have been bitten and are now owned by that vampire. The four owners of the theatre are a mixture of elite and aristocrat, so they bring both sides of vampire society to the shows at Vampirerotique. They’ve been successful and their London based business is now the premier theatre in England, but they’re also all bachelors, too busy with work or too damaged from things in their past to entertain thoughts of falling in love. Against the backdrop of erotic shows, sensual decadence, and debauchery, they meet women who will do anything to capture their hearts.
HH: How does Covet begin the series?
FH: Covet is the story of Javier, an elite Spanish vampire and one of the men responsible for coming up with the idea of Vampirerotique. He’s been secretly longing for an owned human female, Lilah, since she arrived at the theatre two years ago and he’s finding it increasingly difficult to resist her, even when the penalty for touching her is death. Lilah hates her master and never consented to become his. When she was shipped off to work at Vampirerotique and set eyes on Javier, she found herself falling for his exotic looks and caring nature. At the start of the book, Javier has been away with his family for a month to celebrate a wedding and Lilah has just broken the nose of the best performer at the theatre just a few hours before the show. It’s down to Javier to reprimand her, but when he finds her alone in a private box during the performance, he has other ideas.
HH: What do you like best about Lilah and why will readers relate to her?
FH: Lilah fights for what she wants. After her initial encounter with Javier, she goes after him, determined to shake some sense into him and not let him toss her aside in some desperate hope to undo what he’s done. She’s strong, brave, and doesn’t back down even when she’s faced with the nightmare of her master. I think readers will love her for that. She wants Javier and even though she’s only human, she fights hard for a future with him.
HH: What do you like best about Javier and why will readers love him?
FH: Javier is a vampire deeply in love with someone forbidden and he knows it, but in the end the laws can’t stop his fierce need to have her in his life, even if that life only lasts one more night and he has to lose his head as the price for it. He’s willing to pay with his life to have one single taste of Lilah. I think readers will love him because he’s intense, deep and very possessive of the woman he loves. He risks everything in order to be with her.
HH: What can you tell us about the books to come in the series?
FH: I’m currently working on the first draft of the fourth book, Enslave. The second book, Crave, is out on March 10th and is the story of Callum and the very forbidden woman he falls for, a werewolf called Kristina. In the third book, Seduce, we meet a woman who is determined to bring the power aristocrat, Antoine, to his knees, and we also meet two new elite vampires who join the theatre. One is Javier’s younger brother, Andreu, and the other is Payne. Andreu’s story is Enslave, in which he meets his match in a succubus called Varya. Seduce will be out this year on June 23rd and Enslave will follow it on August 4th. The fifth book in the series belongs to Payne and is entitled Bewitch, and the sixth book belongs to an ancient blood-crazed vampire who is the brother of Antoine and is gaining himself a huge fan club after his appearance in Covet. Snow’s story will be entitled Claim, and should be out in 2013 if not earlier.
HH: How is this series different from your other works?
FH: The whole series is very dark and sensual, and a lot more erotic than my usual books. I always have very emotional, wicked love scenes in my stories, but this time it’s different. The books are geared more towards the sensual erotic side of romance because of their setting and readers are really loving the heat in the series so far. The theatre has a very decadent, sumptuous and sexy feel to it and I think that comes through in the stories and the series as a whole. It’s a very wicked wanton sort of place and the vampires who run it have some seriously hot blood in their veins.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
FH: Besides working on the Vampire Erotic Theatre series, I’m finishing up the next novel in my Vampires Realm series, Masquerade, which will be out in May and I’m about to begin writing the next novel in my best selling Her Angel series. Her Demonic Angel should be out in September.
HH: What sources of inspiration do you draw from for ideas?
FH: I draw inspiration from everything. Movies, television, books, music, and real life. There isn’t anything that I can’t get inspired by. I never really know where a lot of my ideas come from. Normally they pop into my head and I don’t think to trace their source. I just accept them with open arms and begin writing notes for them.
HH: What's the best book you read in 2011?
FH: I actually read quite a lot of books in 2011. I did a challenge and ended up reading 24 books in total. My favourites were books in Lara Adrian’s fantastic Midnight Breed series, and Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld. Out of all the books, I would say it was Ashes of Midnight by Lara Adrian and The Darkest Pleasure by Gena Showalter.
HH: What are you most looking forward to in 2012?
FH: Many things. In terms of reading, I can’t wait to get stuck into my stack of books that I got for Christmas and I’m looking forward to reading more of the two series that I mentioned and starting some new ones. In terms of writing, I’m looking forward to it all! I love writing and that’s why it’s so hard for me to find reading time. I have some built in reading time this year though as I’m going on some fantastic journeys. One is a jaunt around Europe by train for almost three weeks, and the other is a three week trip to New Zealand. That is a lot of reading time!
HH: Thank you!
