An Interview with B.J. McCall
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: BJ, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE! Your featured book is Scarlet Tear. What can you tell us about this sizzling futuristic romance?

BJ: Captain Wytt Sann is ready for his new mission. Assigned to Prince Xxan, the Commander of the Anti-Pirate Defense Forces, Wytt believes his mission is to apprehend Kirxx, a young pirate who's building a reputation by poaching in the territory of Rangar, the pirate king. But the mission isn't to apprehend Kirxx, but to impersonate him.

The pirate has been caught and like Wytt, Kirxx is half Sark and half Aktarian, a rare racial mix. The real mission is to compete in Rangar's annual zap tournament as Kirxx and to win the prizes: a beautiful virgin and a blood-red stone.

Zap is a game between two opponents played on a diamond-shaped field. Wytt is an accomplished player. The game is physical and bloody and the prizes are more than they seem.

Her identity unknown, the young woman looks Glacidian and the stone appears to be a scarlet tear. The tear is a rare stone authorized as the official Glacid state gift, given by diplomats during peace missions. How did a Glacidian woman and a diplomatic stone become a pirate's prize?

Ceyla has lived her life on Osesar, a pirate haven. Her platinum blonde hair, pale skin and silvery eyes set her apart from the other inhabitants. She has no idea why she is different, but she knows her people must exist somewhere in the universe. Her owner, Rangar, is offering her as a prize in his tournament. The winner will be her new master.

On the eve of the tournament, Ceyla learns that Rangar has fixed the competition so Kirxx, his enemy, will win. Rangar wants revenge on the young pirate and she must help him. Ceyla realizes that Rangar is holding back critical information but she has no choice but to agree with his plan. She plots her escape.

His ruse undiscovered, Wytt enters the tournament as Kirxx. Wytt is stunned by Ceyla's beauty. The more time he spends with Ceyla, the more personal the mission becomes.

Ceyla is attracted to the handsome pirate. He tells her about a far away ice planet called Glacid where her people live. With each encounter, Ceyla's attraction grows. The touch of his hand makes her tremble and his kiss makes her burn with desire. Ceyla wants Kirxx, but living on Osesar had taught her to never trust a pirate.

To Ceyla the Scarlet Tear is a jewel she can sell once she escapes. Ceyla has no idea it holds a unique history and is the key to her true identity.

HH:What do you like best about Ceyla and why will readers relate to her?

BJ: Ceyla is an alien raised in a pirate world. She doesn't know her parents or anything about her heritage, but she knows she doesn't belong. When Rangar chooses her as a prize for his Zap Tournament, Ceyla seizes the opportunity of her misfortune as a method of escaping the pirate kingdom. She doesn't submit to fate, she grabs it by throat and fights for her future.

HH: What do you like best about Wytt and why will readers relate to him?

BJ: Wytt is a soldier, a man who lives by a code of honor. Despite the danger, he undertakes a mission to save a woman he's never met. During the mission he falls for Ceyla, but his duty demands that returning her to her home planet and her people is far more important than his personal desires.

HH: How did you go about creating the world this story takes place in?

BJ: The world began in my first Ellora's Cave release, Icy Hot and continued in Deep Heat. The planets of Glacid, Aktares and Sark make up the Aktarian Federation. The first book deals with bringing Tayra, Queen of Glacid and Axxis, Lord Chancellor of Sark together for peace negotiations. Although politics rules the day, true love prevails. The second book is the love story of Ria, the Sarkian pilot of a commercial transport and Gyrr, the son of Tayra and Axxis. Tayra makes an appearance in Deep Heat and Scarlet Tear.

HH: Is this available in print now?

BJ: Scarlet Tear is available in a print anthology, Pirate's Prize. My book was paired with Paige Tyler's book Pirate's Woman for the anthology. Icy Hot and Deep Heat are also available in a print anthology, Aktarian Chronicles. The books are available from Ellora's Cave, Barnes and Nobel and Amazon.

HH: What else do you have in the works?

BJ: A werewolf holiday tale, Holiday Moon, will be released in December from Changeling Press. Also, Relentless, my contribution to the Changeling's multi-author series, Hellhound Detective Agency will come out later this fall.

HH: Out of the stories you've released this year, which is your personal favorite and why?

BJ: Picking a book is like picking a favorite child, but writing Scarlet Tear was special because it allowed me to revive the Aktarian Federation and the unique people inhabiting its planets.

HH: What's your favorite way to interact with readers?

BJ: I really enjoy participating in the TRS events, like the End of Summer Bash and the Spookapalooza. Those are so much fun and I really love reading the comments.

HH: What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

BJ: I love dark chocolate. Even as a kid I preferred Mounds to Almond Joy. And now it's the latest good-for-you food.

HH: Any conference or appearance plans this fall?

BJ: I haven't anything planned. The end of the year is so very busy. Maybe next year.

HH: Thank you!
