McCall By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio HH: BJ, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Your featured book is Covert. This is the latest in the Dragonfire series. What do you like best about this series and how it has evolved? BJ: I wanted to write a series about dragon shifters sharing a modern world with humans. The series has two themes which thread the stories together, the dragon shifter H/H experiencing dragonfire with their true mate and the dragon warriors. A love story is the basis of all my books, but I enjoy incorporating the action and magic of the dragon warriors, an exclusive army of trained shifters whose mission is to protect the dragon population. HH: How does Covert continue it and what sets it apart from the other stories in the series? BJ: Covert is a dragon warrior story, but this is my first book about a female dragon warrior. Velka is given a covert assignment. Her mission is to infiltrate the Rogues, a group of thieving dragons known for violent robberies. HH: What do you like about Velka and what's her greatest strength? BJ: She’s a trained warrior on a dangerous, but important mission. She has empathy for the teenagers who have been drawn into the Rogues by the promise of gold, but Velka understands her duty. Good dragons are paying for the sins of the Rogues. It’s her mission to bring down the Rogues before more innocent dragons fall victim to the Vigilantes. Being Aric’s prisoner doesn’t stop this determined warrior, but her attraction to this sexy Vigilante is an unexpected hitch. HH: What do you like best about Aric and why will readers love him? BJ: Aric is a human undercover cop committed to bringing down the Vigilantes, a group who believes the only good dragon is a dead dragon. When Velka becomes his prisoner, Aric is torn between attraction and duty. Is Velka lying or trying to escape? Is she a good dragon or a bad dragon? Love changes a man and I hope the reader will enjoy those moments when Aric doesn’t care about the answers to the questions. HH: Which of these stories is your personal favorite? BJ: It’s difficult to answer that question. The first book, Captured, created the dragon society. The second book, Chosen, dug into dragon lore. The third book, Covert, was about a female dragon warrior. I’m already thinking of a fourth that will delve into dragon clan obligation and the conflict it creates for the H/H. HH: Which was the hardest to write and why? BJ: Captured, the first book presented the challenge of creating the dragon warriors and the dragon society living in the Fire Mountains. HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? BJ: Spaceport:Beguiled was just released by Changeling Press and October brings Eternity Factor, an urban fantasy, vampire story also published by Changeling. In December look for, Wolf Run, part of Changeling’s Santa’s Helpers holiday series. HH: What are you most excited about in your career right now? BJ: I have challenged myself to finish a book I’ve been writing off and on for two years. I love the characters and I’m so close to the end. HH: What are you looking forward to most in the rest of 2012? BJ: Final edits on two books contracted with Ellora’s Cave. Pleasure Pact is a werewolf story and Kela’s Guardian, is a demon slayer story in Volume 4 of the anthology, Something Wicked This Way Comes. HH: Do you have a writing hero and if so, who would it be? BJ: I have to admire ladies like Kate Douglas and Angela Knight who have become mainstream authors, but also elevated the erotic genre.
