An Interview with B.J. McCall
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: BJ, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Spaceport: Beguiled. First, how does this story fit into the Spaceport universe?
BJ: My book is a stand-alone story that remains true to the Spaceport universe. Most of the action takes place on or around the port. I created an outbreak of a rare virus that threatens the population of the spaceport and tossed my characters into the chaos.
I included two characters created by Shelby Morgen in Spaceport:Security, in minor roles. I hope loyal readers of the spaceport series will feel right at home in Beguiled.
Beguiled is the second Spaceport book I have written. My first book was Scavenger, the story of a space junk collector.
HH: What do you like about Arrah and what's her greatest strength?
BJ:Arrah’s ship is her home and her crew is like family. At her own expense she volunteers to deliver serum and a medical team to the spaceport. She personally does what the Allied Planets government should be doing for the population of the stricken spaceport.
She’s reluctant to trust, but when she gives her heart, she does it without reservation.
HH: What do you like best about Lash and what makes him different than most heroes?
BJ: Lash is unique. He’s an empath and he has the ability to control his pheromone output. For Lash, seducing a woman is easy.
Lash is an operative for his government and his mission is to get to Spaceport Adana and find a spiritual leader from his home planet. Arrah’s ship is the only vessel permitted to land at the spaceport. Lash will do what he has to do to complete his mission, but he quickly finds out that Arrah isn’t just a means to an end.
HH: How did you go about creating their story in the confines of a multi-author series?
BJ: I wanted the spaceport to play a central role in my story without changing the world created by the contributing authors. I decided that my hero and heroine would be outsiders, non-residents of the spaceport, but I needed a compelling reason to bring them to Adana. The Raxa virus killing off the population established an urgent and dangerous situation for my characters.
My heroine and hero’s love story is intertwined with their important, but different objectives. Hopefully, the sparks flying between my characters in the midst of the situation and evitable clash of their goals will entertain the reader.
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story?
BJ: I really enjoyed creating my hero, Lash. His special talents had to be woven into the story. His empathic skill and his ability to control his pheromones added dimension to his character that posed an interesting challenge.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
BJ: December brings a new Christmas story, Wolf Run. The book is part of Santa’s Helpers, a multi-author holiday series from Changeling Press.
I just signed a contract for Covenant, the fourth book in my Dragonfire series from Changeling Press. Covenant will be out in February 2013.
HH: What are you most excited about in your career right now?
BJ: I had two books released in October, a vampire tale for Changeling and a werewolf story for Ellora’s Cave. I really want to write more books about the vampires of the Cemetery and create more stories about the Arasani and Chanta wolf packs. New series are always exciting.
HH: What are you looking forward to most in the rest of 2012?
BJ: The holidays are here and it’s fun to pull out the decorations and hang the Christmas lights. I really love how wonderful my neighborhood looks at nighttime.
HH: What are you reading at the moment?
BJ: I just finished The Doomsday Key by James Rollins. I’m currently reading The Merlot Murders by Ellen Crosby and my next book will be Daryk Hunter by Denise Agnew.
HH: Do you have a writing hero and if so, who would it be?
BJ: Kate Douglas. I don’t think I would be published if not for Kate. She encouraged me and inspired me.
HH: Thank you!
