An Interview with B.J. McCall
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: BJ, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE! Your featured book is Sugarplum: Canine Christmas. Where did you get the idea for this sizzling holiday tale?

BJ: Birthdays are very special to most of us. It's our big day and our friends and family make a fuss over us. I've often wondered about people who are born on a holiday. Does the holiday overshadow their big day? How do they feel about it? I'll answer the question by spinning it into a tale. Canine Christmas is the story of Joy Kingston, a Christmas baby. She's facing another birthday, but this one is the big 30. Joy wants it to be special, a birthday she'll always remember and enlists her two best friends to help. I had so much fun writing this holiday story and giving Joy the best Christmas birthday ever.

HH: What do you like best about Joy and why will readers relate to her?

BJ: Joy is going through a situation that most women have faced. Her boyfriend, Phil, has dumped her.

He hasn't broken her heart, but her big holiday birthday plans to visit him are kaput. Her family and her best friends are busy with Christmas travel plans of their own and Joy is facing her big 30 alone. Joy knows Phil isn't the one, but instead of taking a poor me attitude she decides to shake things up. She asks her trusted best friends, Michelle and Karin, to get her a man for her birthday, a sexy hunk wearing nothing but a big purple bow, a man capable of destroying her memories of Phil.

Joy has spunk and I like her. I hope the readers will as well.

HH: What do you like best about Jake and why will readers love him?

BJ: Jake is Karin's step-brother. He's twenty-seven and he's had a thing for Joy for years, but Karin, Michelle and Joy treat him like a little brother. When Jake learns about Joy's birthday request, he takes on the challenge. He's a werewolf and a cop and no way is he letting Karin set Joy up with a stranger for a night of sex. He's also romantic and the birthday he puts together for Joy is done to win her heart.

HH: What draws today's readers to the romance genre in your opinion?

BJ: Everyone wants to find that special someone. Despite the trials and tribulations the characters undergo, they find common ground, they work together and they fall in love. The genre renews our faith in love. If werewolves can find their perfect mate and vampires can overcome adversity, then we all can find true love and live happily ever after.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

BJ: Dragonfire: Chosen, the second story in my dragon series, will be released in January. I think it's a great way to start a new year.

HH: What's a day in the life of author B.J. McCall like?

BJ: I start the morning with a cup of tea and if I have no appointments or tasks, I turn on my laptop and go to work. I walk my dog several times a day. The break gives me time to think about a scene or ponder a new idea for a book. I do housework and laundry, but I'd rather kick back and read a good book. In the evening I enjoy watching TV. I'm a Dexter fan.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

BJ: My goal is to write a mainstream romance book. I think it will be a fun challenge for me. When the right idea hits me, it will happen.

HH: What are you reading at the moment?

BJ: The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis.

HH: Where is your favorite place to shop for books?

BJ: I have a Kindle and buy from Amazon. I also buy ibooks for my iPad. I'm still a fan of hardback and paperback books. I enjoy visiting bookstores and I support my local library.

HH: Any New Year's resolutions?

BJ: Exercise more and drop a few pounds. Both are achievable so why do I make them every year? I think it's because of the holidays; mashed potatoes, savory stuffing and pumpkin pie.

HH: Thank you!
