Shelby Morgen

Maggie. Drop dead gorgeous brunette. Retro-Blues singer, Maggie is, and a damn fine one, at that. Maggie's all class. Too classy for Nashville. Far too classy for the likes of me.

Me, I'm a cop with a real nose for crime -- I'm also a werewolf. Now I'm undercover, chasing a serial killer, a bloodsucking bastard of a rogue vampire. And he's close. So close I can almost smell him. I have to be here, have to stop him.

Before he takes the bait... Before he kills the woman I love. Again.

About Shelby Morgen

Shelby must be insane. What else would have led her to start an online publishing company? Shelby shares her belief in electronic publishing with her long-time friend and business partner, Bill, her husband of 30 years. Perhaps the insanity is contagious. Shelby loves writing off-beat tales that defy as many rules as possible. She likes chocolate with her peanut butter, suspense with her romance, and kink with her sex. She's always had a hard time keeping science fiction, fantasy, and paranormal from mixing with her kink. Fortunately for Shelby, electronic publishing has opened many new doors for cross-genre authors and artists.

Author, editor, publisher, and Slayer of Pirates, Shelby Morgen, A.K.A. Margaret Riley, has the coolest job ever -- she's the keeper of dreams. Visit Shelby's website for her latest releases. An Interview with Shelby Morgen
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Shelby, your featured book is House of Blues and it's part of the Protect and Serve series at Changeling Press. What can you tell us about this series and how the books are connected?

SM: Protect and Serve is a shared universe multi-author series set in the very near future, dedicated to men and women in uniform, particularly those with a Paranormal bent (Shifters, Vamps, etc.). Lena Austin created Protect and Serve , and opened the series with Flash Point, the story of a fireman and his alley cat rescue who's a little more than he bargained for! The series has gone on to include authors like Anne Kane, Angela Knight, Silvia Violet, Cynthia Sax, and Sharon Marie Bidwell. As well as, of course, ME!

HH: How does House of Blues fit into the series?

SM: You know I love wolf shifters. House of Blues is the story of an undercover wolf-shifter cop nicknamed Memphis and the retro-blues singer Maggie he's fallen for. Memphis is having a real hard time keeping their relationship strictly professional -- oh, hell, face it, he doesn't even TRY. Fortunately Maggie's got some secrets of her own, and they're both in pursuit of the same goal -- catching a serial killer.

HH: What do you like best about Maggie and why will readers relate to her?

SM: Maggie's seriously kick ass! She's got the Jessica Rabbit look -- "I'm Not Bad, I'm Just Drawn that Way!" with the brains of an FBI agent to back up the curves. She's a full figured woman with an attitude – and she's always got your back!

HH: What can you tell us about your hero and why will readers be taken with him? What sets him apart from your other heroes?

SM: I love a wounded hero. Trip -- that's his real name, Trip Wheeler -- is more than an undercover cop. Or a werewolf. In his world, weres are not immortal, but... well, let's just say he has a very, very long memory, and some really old issues. There's been ongoing racial tension between the weres and the Nashville vamp society for two hundred years. Now that the paras aren't hiding their existence from humans anymore, you'd think things would have gotten better. No. The rivalries are more pronounced than ever. And Trip's got some old, old wounds that never really healed. Maggie's just what he needs -- and that terrifies him. To need is to open yourself to the possibility of loss... plus he's got this awesome duster... I want that coat!

HH: Will you be writing any other stories in this series?

SM: I don't have anything planned for this series ATM, but soon as I say that that's liable to change!

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

SM: I'm currently working on an old obsession of mine, the final book of the pre-Northlanders series, Dragon's Watch. I've started this one twice before, and gotten distracted -- such is the way of ADD writers! I'm also working on a short for Mirror Mirror, a Razor about a shape shifting house cat, and a Christmas story. ADD? Me? Why do you ask...

HH: What goals have you set for yourself in your career?

SM: Write more hot hunky heroes! Edit more hot hunky heroes! Publish more hot hunky heroes! (Sensing a theme here?) Promote more… meet more readers...

HH: What are you reading at the moment?

SM: I'm reading -- and editing, of course -- Brannan Black's conclusion to her Wolfman series, Kira Stone's Immortal Steps, and Camille Anthony's Bunny Tails Finale, and as a critique partner, Angela Knight's final in her Masters series. Muahahaaa!!!

HH:Where is your favorite place to shop for books?

SM: Err… shop? I… shop. I can't remember when was the last time I went book shopping. My TBR pile is almost totally work related. I guess I'd have to say, because that's where almost everything I read is headed, but that sounds like shameless self-promo. Oh, wait. Interviews are supposed to be promo, right? Honestly, I read Changeling, Razor, and anything my critique partners send me. Other than that, I shop online. Lately for low carb recipes.

HH: Any special plans for the holidays this year?

SM: Oh yes! Wait. Me, or Changeling? My personal goal is to bake as many low carb yummies as possible with as many old world flours as I can locate. I've been experimenting with almond meal, coconut flour, and flaxseed meal so far.

As for Changeling -- we're currently organizing our 8th Annual Very Changeling Christmas contest and party! (I had to count that twice on my fingers just to be sure. Yup. 8th!) This year we'll have eight winners: one book a month (four winners), two books a month (two winners), and two books a week (two winners) all year, readers' choice of titles, as well as our Twelve Days of Christmas winners, who will receive Changeling Gift Certificates for $5, $10, and $25 -- one random winner for each title on release day! I can't wait -- December's a month long party for us at Changeling -- this will be so much fun!

HH: Shelby, thank you for talking with us at TRS!

SM: Thanks for having me, Holly. As always it's been a blast! TRS rocks!

HH: Thank you!
