N.J. Walters worked at a bookstore for several years and one day had the idea that she would like to quit her job, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years.
Although she was still fairly young, that was when the mid-life crisis set in. Happily married to the love of her life, with his encouragement (more like, "For God's sake, quit the job and just write!" ) she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel, Annabelle Lee, and life would never be the same.

HH: NJ, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured book, Sweet Charity.NJ: Hi, Holly. Thank you for having me here at TRS Blue.
Sweet Charity is the final book in the futuristic/erotic Project Alpha series and is available from Ellora's Cave Publishing. It features Adrian, the leader of the opposition and Charity Caruthers, the daughter of his worst enemy. It's the story of two people who should be enemies, but become something much more. This is a book about love and trust and loyalty. It also concludes the thread of the bigger storyline that's been running through all the books of the trilogy.
This is the first time I ever did a series when I knew going in it was going to be three books from start to finish. I wrote them one after the other, staying in that futuristic world and had a blast working on all of them.
HH: This is the third book in your Project Alpha series. Where did the idea for the series itself come from? NJ: It really started when I was writing Threads of Destiny, book four of my Tapestries series. I brought several people from futuristic earth into the alternate world of Javara where the Tapestries books are set. At the end of that book, not every stays in Javara. I couldn't stand to not tell their stories and that's where the idea for the Project Alpha trilogy came from.
HH: What can you tell us about the first two books in this series? NJ: The first book in the series is Embracing Silence. It's Earth 2133 and Tienan is an Alpha-an assassin who has been genetically and computer enhanced. He has escaped from the lab that created him and the Ruling Council that controlled him. He is now outside the Gate-a high-tech shield that protects the enclosed city from the contaminated and lawless land outside. Tienan must constantly evade security forces sent to eliminate him, his only goal to destroy his former masters.
Silence is a tracker with the Resistance on the trail of a dangerous stranger. The hunter becomes the hunted and when Tienan kidnaps her, she thinks her life is over. But both captor and captive are enthralled with one another. Desire and need ignite each time they touch. Enemies become lovers.
Treachery and mistrust drive them apart. But nothing can diminish the sexual heat smoldering between them. With enemies all around, they must confront each other one final time. With time running out, sexual longing and trust battle with betrayal for supremacy.
Book two is Have Mercy. Logan is an Alpha-a genetically enhanced assassin-who has escaped from the lab that created him. He is now outside the Gate, a high-tech shield that protects the enclosed city from the contaminated and lawless land outside. Shot while evading security forces sent to eliminate him, Logan's only goal is survival.
Mercy Dockins is a healer. Her world is shaken to its foundations when a stranger is brought to her near death. As she heals him, her body and soul respond to him, overwhelming her with sexual desire. With little more than a look and a touch, passion flares out of control, consuming them both.
But this stranger is dangerous to not only her well-being, but also to the safety of everyone she loves. And he has brought the security forces right to her door.
HH: How does Sweet Charity continue the series? Will there be more? NJ:
Sweet Charity is the culmination of the fight between the two warring factions-the people inside the Gate and those outside. Readers meet Adrian, the leader of the Resistance, in book one and this book is his story. The Alphas join with the Resistance to launch one final offensive against General Caruthers and his Security Force.
Sweet Charity is the final book. This was written as a trilogy, to be complete in three books. At this time, I have no intentions of going back to that world.
HH: Which was your personal favorite story in this series and why? NJ: Oh, that's tough. I love all three couples. They each have their own demons to fight and hurdles to overcome before they find love. If I have to chose, it would have to be Mercy and Logan in Have Mercy. Mercy teaches Logan that there is so much more to him than he ever imagined. It's a very erotic story, yet tender and emotional as well.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? NJ: I have a new Tapestries book coming out this year. Embroidered Fantasies is book five and features the remaining Craddock brothers, who readers will recognize from earlier books.
I'm also part of a five book, four author series being released from Ellora's Cave. The Hearts of Fire is a paranormal series featuring books by Ciana Stone, T.J. Michaels, Nicole Austin and myself. My contribution to the series is book three -- Seeking Charlotte. No release date yet, but sometime between now and the summer. Each book is a stand-alone read, but has a larger storyline -- their ongoing battle with a nasty demon-which culminates in the final book. We're currently working on book five as a joint effort. The whole experience has been amazing.
I'm also hoping to have word on a few more books soon and I'm currently working on the next book in my Legacy werewolf series for Samhain Publishing.
HH: What's a typical day like for you? NJ: I'm an early riser and usually sit at my computer after breakfast and write. Almost all my writing is done in the morning. The afternoon is spent on yahoo groups, emails, promotion, edits and anything else I have to do. In between it all, I fit in housework…if I really have to. =)
HH: What do you consider a really satisfying writing day? NJ: For me that means writing a chapter on my work-in-progress, which means between three-thousand and five-thousand words. That seems to be what works for me. I try to get in at least four good writing days a week. Five or six if I'm really cooking on a book.
HH: What do you personally enjoy reading? NJ: Romance. LOL No surprise there. I love all kinds of romance, though, from series to contemporary, paranormal, vampire, werewolf, historical and romantic suspense. I also enjoy reading the occasional self-help book or more spiritual text. Plus, some of the research I do for my writing can be fascinating.
HH: What would you most like to accomplish this year? NJ: That's a huge question. I'd like to write six or seven new books. Plus, I'd love to get positive replies on several books I have out there to other publishers.
I'd also like to take some time off for a short vacation. I worked all of last year, never really leaving the computer behind for more than a day or so. I could use a break even if it's just driving to a beach cottage for a few days.
I'd like continued health and happiness. I'm blessed to be able to do what I love for a living and hope that continues for many more years to come.
