About Calista Fox
Award-winning author Calista Fox began her professional fiction-writing career in 2004, following an exciting career in PR, where she specialized in writing speeches and Congressional testimonies. Her books have received rave reviews and she is also the recipient of a Reviewer's Choice Award for Best Erotic Sci-Fi Novella. HH: Calista, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured book, Jaden's Wicked Witch.CF: Thanks for having me again! Jaden's Wicked Witch is a fun and sexy paranormal novella about a feisty witch (Devinia) who is a deity by birthright-but too modern for the antiquated realm of magik-and a sexy sorcerer (Jaden) who's sent to find her and bring her home so that she can rule the realm after her mother (the prevailing Oracle) steps down.
HH: Devinia isn't like other witches and Jaden is a sorcerer sent to help her accept her destiny. Where did you get the idea for this fabulous story about powerful beings and their realm? CF: I originally wrote this story as a Halloween-themed story for Ellora's Cave, so I tried to come up with an idea centered around the Autumn Equinox. And since witches go well with Halloween, I knew I wanted to write about magic-and I couldn't resist making my heroine a naughty little witch! Having a hunky immortal warrior track her down and try to convince her to return to the realm of magik with him sounded like a fun clash of wills-and a good foundation for a sexy, steamy story!
HH: How do go about creating a new world for a story? CF: I've only recently begun building worlds because I didn't think I had the imagination for it. But once you get into, it's a heck of a lot of fun! My very first editor told me that anything goes when creating a new world, as long as you define the rules to the reader. Meaning, if I explain well enough why the grass is blue and the sky is green in Upside Down world, readers will follow along with me. Makes creating new and interesting places a lot of fun!
HH: What research did you do to realize this story? CF: I have a story coming out in Secrets Volume 23 at the end of this month (titled "Forever My Love") about a witch from the 16th century who is reincarnated after every death because her destiny is to save the powerful deities that rule her birth world. The hero is a sexy vampire who has protected her for over five hundred years, though she has no idea who he is until her powers are returned to her-along with her memories of the love they shared half a millennium ago. I did most of my witchcraft research on this book, and then rolled what I didn't use into "Jaden's Wicked Witch." I've learned a lot about witches and it's been very interesting and enlightening! I plan to continue my research for future stories.
HH: What do you like best about Devinia and Jaden? CF: They're powerful and, at the end of the day, they always do what's right… even if it's not in their personal "grand plan." The chemistry between them is off the charts, and it was really easy to make this a sexy story because of it. They're hot together!
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this refreshingly original story of witches and magic? CF: I hoped for an original approach! It was just fun to step outside boundaries and be creative!
HH: What else can readers look forward to from you? CF: Aside from Secrets Volume 23 coming out in July, I have two more Ellora's Cave titles coming up: "Forever in her Eyes" (part of the Jewels of the Nile series) and "Devil's Kitchen," an action-filled, super-hot vampire story!
HH: What do you enjoy about writing erotic romance? CF: Great question! I love the readers because they're embracing their sexuality, and I love my publishers and editors because they like to see boundaries pushed and they don't require my writing, plots and characters to be contained within a preconceived box. I enjoy the freedom they give me to let my imagination wander!
HH: How do you think it's doing in today's market? CF: Based on my personal sales, I'd say it's still a very hot market! Like anything, I think there's some saturation because there are a lot of talented writers in the genre-but there are also a lot of die-hard fans of erotic romance! There's also a need to push the envelope so the genre doesn't get stale, but that keeps things challenging and interesting for authors as much as for readers.
HH: What do you enjoy reading? CF: I read everything! I'm into Karen Rose right now, and I'm also reading "Lipstick Jungle" from Candace Bushnell.
