An Interview with Beth Kery

HH: Thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured book, Daring Time.BK: Hi Holly, thanks for having me. Daring Time is my second book at Berkley Sensation. It's what my editor calls a 'paranormal light.' I like it because I got to blend several of my favorite genres, contemporary, suspense, paranormal...and even a tad of historical.
HH: Two souls separated by time. Where did you get the idea for this incredible tale? BK: I had toured the Prairie Avenue historical district in Chicago, which was the street where Chicago's elite and wealthy lived in the late 1800's/early 1900's. The houses themselves seemed to speak to me. I imagined a man in this time unexpectedly inheriting one of these incredible gems and having visions of a woman. While others think she's a ghost, the man is convinced she's alive--in another space and time, but alive, nevertheless. Their desire for each other is so strong that it creates a bridge between times.
HH: What do you like best about Ryan? BK: He's a true alpha--a vice cop and amateur boxing champion--but he's also knowledgeable about history and literature, and a secretly a true romantic. How could he be anything else when he determines he's going to cross the boundary of a century to save the incredible woman from his visions and dreams?
HH: What challenges do you face when creating a story where one of your protagonists is a ghost? BK: Well, she's not really a ghost. (I should re-read the blurb, because everyone is referring to her as a ghost--lol) Hope is very much alive and well, but in her own time. Because of some magic built into the mansion that both Ryan and Hope share, and because of their intense attraction for one another, they cross the divide. What others might envision as a ghost is really a thinning of the barrier of time.
HH: What sort of research was required to bring this story so convincingly to life? BK: I had to do a lot of research about Chicago in the early 1900's, especially in the very divergent neighborhoods of Prairie Avenue, where the wealthiest Chicagoans lived, and the Levee District, which was the notorious red-light district, known for graft, gambling, drugs and prostitution.
HH: What else do you have coming up for lucky readers? BK: I have an e-book from Ellora's Cave, a contemporary paranormal called Through Her Eyes on 4/29, Daring Time on 5/5, Sweet Restraint from Berkley on 7/7/9, Paradise Rules from Berkley on 10/6 and Release from Berkley in February of 2010.
HH: How disciplined do you have to be in your career at this point?
BK: Very. I need to put out a certain number of words per day, plus keep up with promotion and marketing. It's a lot.
HH: What's the biggest challenge you face in your career?
BK: Probably face to face promotion. I'm pretty reserved, so book signings, etc. are a challenge for me.
HH: What are you reading now? BK: All U Can Eat--Emma Holly and Angels' Blood by Nalini Singh.
HH: What would you most like to accomplish in your career in the next three years? BK: I'd like to still be employed--lol--which means consistently getting new contracts. I think it'd be awesome to go into mass market.
