An Interview with Beth Kery

KR: Beth, thank you for joining us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about
your featured book, Subtle Destiny.BK: Thanks Katie. Glad to be here!
Subtle Destiny is book four of the Subtle Lovers series. This is an extremely sexy and romantic book that has been a long time in coming. In fact, much of the intensity between Jax and Skylar comes from the fact that their romance has been building since Book 1-Subtle Magic. Each book in the series so far tells part of their story, with Subtle Destiny being the pinnacle of their relationship-and in many ways, the climax of the series thus far.
KR: This is the latest in your Subtle Lovers series. How does it
continue this fabulous story line? BK: Well, as I mentioned above, Subtle Destiny is a story that has elements of it embedded in the three previous books. The series ultimate 'bad guy' Asmoday returns in this book and vanquished once and for all. Jax has superceded his brother Bale in power due to the immense suffering he's experienced from not being able to join with his true mate, Skylar. Because he's so powerful, he is now destined to become the leader of the small race of subtle beings called Watchers. It's fated that Skylar and Jax will finally come together. But that doesn't mean Skylar is just going to facilely accept that fact, especially when she's harboring a volatile secret of her own.
KR: What do you like best about Skylar and Jax? BK: I love Skylar because despite her supernatural gifts (the ability to prophesize the future, see "auras" and heal) she strikes me as a very ordinary woman dealing with the stress of having lost her lover and raising a son alone. But at the moment when her loved ones are threatened she rises to her full potential-literally channeling the power of the goddess in order to become the divine in living flesh.
Jax is special because he started out being a 'bad guy.' His need for Skylar and the fact that he couldn't have her left him wounded and raw-desperate to do anything to be with her. As the series progress, we see him less as a criminal, however, and come to understand him better. We begin to ache for him as he walks around with this gaping wound in his spirit that cannot heal. The fact that he transforms his suffering, resulting in him becoming the strongest of all the Ammadons makes him an exciting and unique hero.
KR: What about this story will really make it stand out from the other
stories in the series? BK: I think the fact that it's a pinnacle for the series, as I mentioned. So much culminates in this book. Also, it's got to be one of the most intensely romantic books I've ever written.
KR: Where did you get the original idea for this series? Did you plan
a series or did it evolve over time? BK: Well, I wanted to do a series with a unique supernatural race for the heroes. The Watchers are derived from many sources-the myths of the incubus, modern legend in regard to speculations on early civilization being jump started by 'aliens,' and ancient mythology to name a few.
KR: What do you have coming up for readers out there? BK: I have a book called COME TO ME FREELY releasing at Ellora's Cave in July. CTMF is a contemporary along the lines of EXORCISING SEAN'S GHOST. SUBTLE VOYAGE comes out in September of this year from Ellora's Cave. SV takes a wild, strange new twist on the Subtle Lovers series involving the true identity of the Watcher Fathers. Seems the Fathers weren't such nice guys after all. They're incredibly dangerous, in fact, especially in regard to the mates.
My NY debut comes in December with my Berkley Sensation WICKED BURN. I'm thrilled about this one! I have three NY books coming out in 2009, one more for Berkley Sensation and two for Berkley Heat.
KR: Will you be making any appearances in the coming months?
BK: Unfortunately, no. =(

BK: My answer to this question consistently remains the same-finishing a book! That awesome feeling is what keeps me going.
KR: What's your idea of a really good writing session?
BK: I hate to sound so mercenary, but probably one where I produce a lot of manuscript. I try to write a minimum of a thousand words per day, but I'm thrilled when I get in 3K or more.
