He has never had a serious relationship and he never intends to--most especially not with another man. The fact that he's bi-sexual might be socially acceptable, but politically, it's a potential career killer. Denny has worked too long and too hard to give up everything he's worked for because of a hard body and a pretty face. Still, when Christian faces trauma and strife in his private life, Denny can't help but try to help a little. It's a good thing that he has an iron will--he can't let his infatuation get out of hand, no matter what.
Reviews for Civil Liberties
Mychael Black, popular Torquere author, writes: Christian Parker hides in an out-of-the-way gay bar, hoping for a chance to at least catch a glimpse of the man he's been lusting after. When the man comes in and finally introduces himself as Denny, the two leave together for an unforgettable night --for them both.
For Christian, Denny is the right man, the one he's been waiting for. To Denny, however, what's between them is strictly sex -- nothing more. If Christian didn't already love Denny, it'd be easier to just walk away.
So what happens when they cross paths on the job, where both must hide who they are?
Civil Liberties is an awesome story of two men stuck on paths that prevent them from being who they really are. JJ Massa has a great gift for writing characters you can't help but feel for, and she doesn't let the story get bogged down -- it's always engrossing.
If you like JJ Massa's work, you'll love Civil Liberties.

An Interview with J.J. Massa
By Holly Hewson The Romance Studio
HH: J.J., thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. What can you tell us about your featured work, Civil Liberties.JJ: Sometimes I think I could have gone on and on in this book. I really didn't know where it was going when I started it. At one point, I wasn't sure Christian was going to live.
HH: You have two strong and sexy heroes. One knows the other is the guy for him, the other is looking for a good time. Where did you get the idea for this fantastic story? JJ: Denny was based loosely on what I remembered of Sam Waterston--his looks, anyway. I've been blind for nearly 12 years and that's the last time I've seen him. The show he was in was one of my daughter's favorites and at the time I began that story, she was watching a marathon. I took his voice and what I remembered of his looks and came up with Denton O'Connor. Of course he would have an aggressive personality. I imagined what that man would do under the circumstances and who might appeal to him. Certainly it wouldn't be someone too simple...
HH: Your book also carefully addresses the issue of the acceptance of gay relationships in certain arenas of society. How do you bring such a positive message to your work without being preachy but in a way that enhances your work? JJ: We all know that gay and bi relationships exist and have done for as long as mammals have inhabited the earth. I don't think reality should be preachy. I really dislike preachy. For my part, I just want to share what i think is interesting and entertaining with folks who want to read it. I write m/f stories and m/f/m as well as m/m/m. Those story dynamics interest me and when an idea hits that I think i can do justice to, I write it. It's somewhere between telling a tale and finding out what happens. Good people have relationships. What gender they are shouldn't matter, though sometimes it really does. If it does, it should figure in the story. And let's face it--who doesn't like a bit of angst when it fits?
HH: What do you like best about Christian and Denny? JJ: I like they're personalities--how different and similar they are. Everyone expects Christian to be a tough cop. Nobody looking at him or looking at his life would expect his preferences. He's secure in who he is and what he wants, even if he can't have it. Denny is so sure of what he should be that he's shocked when things don't go just the way he insists. Both men are strong in their convictions. That's what brings them together and tears them apart. I think that's what I like best about them.
HH: You're a very popular author of M/M romance. As a female author, what draws you to this genre? JJ: What a nice thing to say, Holly. In a genre of so many talented authors, I'm honored to be counted. Like a lot of women, I've got to say the angst is a big draw. We love angst and resolution--forbidden love, star-crossed lovers, what's not to love? But the fact is that there's so much more...M/M love has been sneered at for so long for so many reasons and been handled lovers in so many different ways. I like treating with respect the men who suffer for their preferences. There's so much to explore in this genre--I feel like I have a million stories still to write here.
HH: How do you see the future of gay romance in the genre?
JJ: Like I said, I feel as if there are so many stories still to explore. As a genre, we've only just begun to write erotic stories while romances and m/m adventure stories are still to be written. This genre, M/M, has un-tapped depths that will develop as more of society realizes that same-sex relationships are not anomalies but are a part of life.
HH: What else do you have coming up for lucky readers? JJ: Hmm. Well, I've been included in an anthology coming from Torquere in January. In addition, I have several short stories coming at Torquere as well as a double edition of The Agency ready any time now. I intend to release more new stories with Torquere Press in the next year, so watch for them if you're interested. I also have an m/m/m vampire story promised to Laura Baumbach and a second installation of my Many Worlds Museum series at Linden Bay Romance, though personal setbacks have impacted the release and I can't tell you when it will be ready. Ellora's Cave has a couple of my books to release, so please keep an eye out there as well.
HH: What do you enjoy reading? JJ: That's a loaded question, Holly. I like to read all kinds of stories. I'll be honest, I read my friend's stories first if I'm in the mood for romance or erotic reading. If I started naming them, I"m sure I'll leave someone out, so I won't. I do enjoy action/adventure, intellectual thrillers, all kinds of things. I think all writers get their inspiration from each other--I have no special favorite.
HH: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a writer so far? JJ: I'm very proud of being an RT finalist at one point--I count that among my top ten author accomplishments. That's a hard question, though... I'd have to say that I'm generally content with my life--I speak to my daughters more than three times a week. I like my home, I love what I do to pay the bills. I have good friends that care about me. My life isn't perfect, but finding satisfaction in how I live is my greatest accomplishment.
HH: What would you like to tell readers out there? JJ: Life is tough and money's tight. Thanks for spending your hard-earned dollars on my books. I'll do my best to make sure that your money is well-spent. I love to hear from you. If it takes me a day or two to get back to you, don't worry, I WILL write back. Like you, I have good days and bad days. If it takes too long, give me a nudge. Honestly, I appreciate you.
JJ: Thank you!
