An Interview with B.J. McCall
By Holly for The Romance Studio
HH: B.J., thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured book, Mark of the Moon.BJ: Mark of the Moon is a story about two werewolves, Ivy and Lodan, who each bear a mark on their hip. According to the mark of the moon prophecy these two are destined to mate.
Ivy Ward has a birthmark, a crescent-shaped moon on her butt. The she-wolf bearing this mark may mate only with a werewolf bearing a similar mark. Because of the prophecy no were in Ivy’s pack will touch her and she’s lived her life saddled with the nickname, Poison Ivy. Frustrated and looking for love, Ivy takes an extended vacation with a California pack. Since her mark isn’t readily visible, Ivy embarks on a personal mission of passion. All she needs is a sexy, unsuspecting were and the cover of night to help her. Then she meets Lodan Hunt and the sparks literally fly. Ivy has no idea Lodan bears the mark of the moon or that the prophecy entails far more than a preordained mate.
HH: This is the third book in your Moonlust series. Where did you get the idea for the series itself? BJ: I wanted to write a werewolf story. Lycaon Moon, the first book in the series, wasn’t my first paranormal story, but it was my first werewolf story. The setting for the series is a contemporary werewolf pack in California. Each book is a stand alone, but the pack elders are secondary characters in all three books.
Veda, the heroine of Lycaon Moon, was the genesis of the idea. Veda is such a kick-ass heroine I really enjoyed writing her story. I just had to write more stories about this werewolf pack.
HH: What can you tell us about the first two stories in this series? BJ: Lycaon Moon is the story of Veda Pearl and Kane Ryland, two werewolves who have been apart for three years but have never stopped loving one another.
After losing Kane, Veda left the pack to become a bounty hunter. She lives among humans and has embraced a lifestyle free from the lycan edicts and rituals. She finds pleasure with human lovers and the last thing Veda wants in her life is an alpha wolf.
Banished by the pack three years ago, Kane returns to claim the she-wolf he loves. Since leaving the pack Veda has refused to run in the annual Lycaon Moon claiming ritual. Kane is determined to rekindle the passion and mate by pack law, but Veda’s having none of it.
Lunar Eclipse is the story of Canon Ross and Violet Winter. Canon is a half-breed who was raised in the human world, but is seeking his birthright, a life within his mother’s pack. Reluctantly received, Canon is establishing his place in the pack until he’s seduced by a she-wolf.
Violet wants to mate for love, but her father has other ideas. She refuses to bend to her father’s will and is brought before the pack elders. Violet is ordered to choose a mate by the conclusion of the lunar eclipse.
Sex with the unacceptable half-breed during the eclipse was an act of defiance, meant to demonstrate her independence, but the flames ignited aren’t easily extinguished and Violet quickly discovers that Canon isn’t going to be a werewolf easy to dismiss.
HH: How does Mark of the Moon continue the series? BJ: The common thread through the story is the pack; the community, the rules, the rituals and the werewolves who live within its structure.
HH: What do you like best about Lodan and why is he perfect for Ivy? BJ: He’s pure alpha male. His job is protecting wild wolves. Because of his birthmark and the prophecy he is unable to offer a long-term relationship to any she-wolf and spends most of his time alone in the mountains. Once he meets Ivy, he wants her. He has no idea she is his destined mate, but he’s willing to challenge the prophecy to have her.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
BJ: I have a sci-fi story, With Sword and Salt in the Flavors of Ecstasy II Cavemen anthology scheduled for release by Ellora’s Cave in June. Later in the summer, I have another sci-fi Cosmic Cops: Dark Obsession with Changeling Press.
Also, a contemporary erotic romance, Something Blue will be a re-print release through Cobblestone Press on May 22nd.
HH: What's your favorite type of story to write and why? BJ: A love story is essential. Rarely do I write a book without an HEA. I love writing sci-fi, creating new worlds and different lifestyles. I enjoy paranormal, too. Vampires and werewolves are challenging characters to create.
HH: What's your idea of a perfect hero? BJ: Alpha male. He wants one woman. He’s willing to jump through fire to get her and he’ll do anything to keep her safe. Maybe it will take him a few chapters, but he always commits.
HH: What are you reading now? BJ: Up Close and Personal by Linda Howard. I’ve been a Howard fan for years.
HH: What's your idea of a perfect day? BJ: I love days when a great idea for a story just slams into my brain. The wheels start turning, the plot begins to gel and characters begin to develop.
HH: Thank you!
