About Shawna Moore

As an only child, daydreaming about enchanting places was one of my favorite pastimes. From the first skit I wrote and performed in front of an audience of stuffed animals and Barbie dolls, I've loved being a storyteller. Creating fantasy worlds and filling them with characters provided more fun than any board games or other avenues of amusement. My beloved late mother always encouraged my love of reading and writing, and from well before the time I started kindergarten, she gifted me with books and took me to our local library. She passed away before my first book was published, but her spirit is with me every day, lovingly and creatively spurring me on.

Sharing my stories with readers has proven rejuvenating and rewarding. Currently I'm writing for Ellora's Cave. In addition I've completed over forty other manuscripts including historical and contemporary erotic romances, single-title erotic women's fiction, erotica, novellas and short stories. Writing is my second greatest passion. My greatest passion? Actually, my greatest passions—my family and friends. When it comes to my fiiction work, my promise to readers is erotic content presented in the purest way I know possible. My wish for every man and woman is that they derive as much romance and pleasure from life and their reading material as possible.

An Interview with Shawna Moore
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Shawna, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your latest release, To Hellé and Back Again.

SM: For those who enjoy heroines who are tough-as-nails yet have the ability to charm a man wearing satin, silk and a smile that won't quit, Hellé promises to deliver even more suspense and sexiness in TO HELLé AND BACK AGAIN. This tale takes her to a dream-like world ruled by the ultimate demon. Hellé is capable of slaying visible demons but finds there are some others deep in her psyche that remain a bit difficult to banish. TO HELLé AND BACK AGAIN pits Hellé against two evil men. She not only has to fight off their advances, but also she's forced to fight for her life. Even the Devil's daughter isn't above suffering bad-hair days and rotten luck. Her otherworldly powers don't put her out of harm's way all the time. Hellé doesn't have people automatically doing her bidding now that she's on Earth. Ms. Hawthorn is a woman who isn't afraid of facing down the Devil if the moment arises, but she's terrified of losing the man she loves most.

HH: This is the sequel to Hellé in Heels. First, what can you tell us about that story and where you got the idea for this fascinating set of stories?

SM: As a child I delighted in the fantasy worlds aired on television and pictured in comic books. How the heroes seemed larger than life and always saved the day despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Hellé is a romance-novel super-heroine who is bent on thwarting her daddy, the Devil, and making sure he doesn't mess with the life she's intent on leading on Earth. In TO HELLé AND BACK AGAIN, one villain shows he's every bit Satan's match, and he reveals more than a bit of his back story that shows and tells Hellé he means business in the worst way.

HH: How does this story pick up where Hellé in Heels left off?

SM: The Devil's daughter survives a battle with ball lightening and learns her days in Sin City are numbered unless she consumes a precious mineral found only in Hell-the Hell from which she's been banished.

Three men compete for Hellé's attention. The first evildoer controls much of Vegas' development and vows to destroy her. A second rogue as powerful as Satan hopes to dominate her. The third, an irresistible Greek fisherman, wants her until death parts them.

Hellé and her lover, Menlikus, embark on separate dangerous journeys with a common purpose. Their lives hinge on the cooperation of two persons-one who's betrayed Hellé's friendship, and one she doesn't believe exists.

As well, her friends will suffer the same deadly fate if they're prevented access to this life-sustaining element. Her lover, Menlikus, has a chance to shine in this story and show how far he'll go for the woman he loves. He's battled with and beaten the Devil once, and he's prepared for a repeat performance if necessary.

HH: These two stories are part of Ellora's Cave's Exotica line. What can you tell us about this line and why it was appropriate for your stories?

SM: Books released in the Exotika line feature stories where romance isn't necessarily the focus; however, my three Exotikas have a romance involved. Suspense-filled sexual adventures can, and often do, take center stage in these tales. While my Exotika novels all also feature a happily-ever-after ending, this is not a requirement for the line. An Exotika lead character may not choose an exclusive sexual relationship but may pursue intimate contact with multiple partners. Exotikas place primary emphasis on a woman's sexual pleasure.

HH: What's your favorite story in the series so far and why? Will there be more in this series?

SM: When it comes to the two stories I've released featuring Hellé, TO HELLé AND BACK AGAIN is my favorite for the reason it demonstrates the positive difference a loving bond makes in a woman's life. This story shows how two people romantically-dedicated to each other will take the greatest risks when it comes to sustaining their romance as well as their lives. How a man defeats the Devil physically and mentally to reunite with the woman he loves and of whom he refuses to let go. And he'll risk life and limb again to make sure she and her friends don't suffer agonizing deaths and have their escape from hellish circumstances be all in vain. I've jotted notes for two more books in Hellé's series but haven't begun the writing process. If those are published, they will feature more super-heroine antics and sexy plots.

HH: What else do you have coming up for lucky readers?

SM: I'm editing two erotic romances and plotting a contemporary romance fiction novel. My focus is on the single-title romance project because the characters are speaking so loudly there's no way I can ignore them. The heroine is a woman who finds herself faced with a second chance for love, but many evils are lurking to keep her and her love interest apart.

HH: What's your favorite part of the creative process in writing?

SM: I've three parts tied for favorite. When novel ideas occur, those moments bring sheer satisfaction. Simply the sparking of a new story turns the worst day into the best. I also love writing dialogue. Creating passages that sound as realistic as possible and remaining mindful of how my heroine and hero express themselves verbally. Last, but certainly not least, I embrace the point when I've completed the first draft of a novel and am ready to begin revisions (making sure I've captured each fictional detail, emotion, plot point, scene, bit of dialogue, and moment of character introspection, etc. as cleanly and clearly as possible).

HH: What challenges do you face at this point in your career?

SM: I have two major challenges. One of these is to continue growing as an author. Keeping my creative "voice" in shape. Mastering my storytelling. These pursuits hinge on my second, bigger challenge-finding time to write since I'm also working outside the home. Circumstances in my life over the past two years have threatened to thwart my writing progress at every turn. Sometimes they've succeeded, at other times not. I'm nothing if not persistent. Writing is among my great passions, and I have several recent ideas awaiting consideration for plotting.

HH: What are you reading now?

SM: I'm re-reading a favorite romance novel written by Barbara Delinsky-Coast Road. Her mastery of characterization and emotion are what earned this novel a place on my keeper shelf. Romance storytelling at its finest.

HH: How do you plan to spend the summer?

SM: I'm really excited about the approach of summer. I've reconnected with friends from my high-school graduating class, and we're planning a long weekend get-together. When I'm not spending fun time with family or friends, I'll be writing, retreating to a favorite haven where I can relax and mull ideas, or catching up on my to-be-read pile of romance and women's fiction novels.

Thank you for interviewing me, Holly =) It's been a pleasure.

HH: Thank you!
