Working illegally, Randi Mayers, the world's foremost sex-replacement
designer, aims to create the closest thing to a real man the technology is
capable of. William, the result of advanced nanite technology incorporated
with DNA, is the ultimate "sex replacement" and everything Randi dreamed of.
His sexual prowess leaves her breathless — and very, very satisfied.
But William is much more than a machine, dammit — he's a man! As his
"testing" continues and he demonstrates more and more human characteristics,
they fall in love, but discovery and industrial espionage place them on a
collision course with the Anti-Male faction, with dire results.

An Interview with Sally Painter
By Katie Raines, Assistant for The Romance Studio
KR: Sally, thank you for joining us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about Sexed
Up.
SP: The book takes place in the future where all the men in the world are dead
and the current world government wants to keep it that way. Silly women,
they don't know they can't keep Randi Mayers from fulfilling her lifelong
dream to create a human male. Randi goes to work for the leading sex
replacement company, SEXED UP and there she realizes this lifelong project,
but William, her creation is not what she anticipated at all.
KR: How does a writer take on creating a future world? SP: I don't know how others do it, but for me, I started out wanting to write
about a scientist who created robot sex toys in a future where all the men
were dead. The first scene that came to me was Randi Mayers standing outside
the building of her new employer, SEXED UP and it went on from there. I was
surprised when I discovered her real mission was to recreate not just a
cyborg male but eventually a human male and there was industrial espionage
afoot. As for the rest, the future world was the easiest part of writing the
book since I was making up most of the technology. I did some research on
genetic research and came up with the hows and whys of her male creation. It
was a lot of fun!
KR: Where did you get the idea for this story about a future where men
are gone and your heroine struggles to recreate them? SP: I don't know. The creative process of how and where ideas come from is a
mystery to me. I just start writing and watch it unfold, pretty much the
same way I would as a reader. I'm not a plotter. For me, if I already knew
what was going to happen, I wouldn't have any reason to write the book. I
did want to explore what it would be like if there were no men in the world
and SEXED UP seemed to be a great way to do that.
KR: What did you like best about William? SP: The guy knows what he wants and goes after it.
KR: What can you tell us about the paranormal project you were a part
of in 1987? SP: I was invited to be a participant because of my lifetime experiences with
the paranormal. It was a privately-funded research project created by a
doctor who wanted to explore and test the validity of past lives and
reincarnation. I was very interested in this subject matter and had spent
ten years studying it. It seemed like a natural next step.
However, the project quickly took on a life of its own and went beyond all
expectations and far into realms none of us ever contemplated. I'd like to
write a book about my experiences someday. We definitely felt like explorers
and uncovered some very amazing things. It changed my life forever. I gained
tremendous understanding of life, death, God, and my relationship to
everything. Even though it was a scientific endeavor, it also became a
personal journey for everyone involved. It was really exciting!
KR: How do you feel that experience has played into your writing? SP: I've used many of my experiences in my books. In FATED MATES, my
contribution to the anthology, Love Me Tomorrow, was loosely based on a
progression into the future. Granted, I used some poetic license in creating
the story's aliens, but the emotions are just as I experienced them. For me
the biggest challenge in writing anything is to be authentic with the
emotions. It's through feeling what the characters feel that the story comes
to life for the readers. The experiences I've had are perfect fodder for
paranormal and futuristic fiction.
KR: Where and when do you do your best writing? SP: Since I work from home with my husband, my hours are typically flexible as I
juggle between the two careers. I enjoy writing late at night when the
phones aren't ringing. I'm a night owl and get my best inspirations after
midnight and before sunrise (when all things paranormal are most active).
KR: What's the most important thing you've learned from your writing career? SP: A book is published only through team effort. While I wrote the book, my
editor makes sure it is the best I can produce and challenges me to make it
even better. The FLE (Final Line Editor) makes sure I didn't overlook a typo
or a mistake. The art department works their magic and gives my book a
fantastic cover and those who format the book make sure it is correctly done
so the reader can enjoy the book. And that's really the bare bones of what
goes on. Then there is the webmaster who has to get the product out there on
the website and into the shopping cart system. And, when the book goes to
print, there's another process that must happen. So I've learned a greater
appreciation for how much effort and how many people are involved in the
publication of a single book.
KR: What's the next big goal you want to reach as an author? SP: I have three coming up in the next two months. The first is my EC book, To
Kiss a Gargoyle being selected for the June 10, 2008 Pocket Books'
anthology, MIDNIGHT TREAT. It's very exciting to see this book being
released in print. Then July 18, 2008 my first series, Gargoyles Seduced
launches with the first book, REUNITED. I started writing Reunited in 2002
and didn't pick it back up until 2007. So these are two big goals realized
for 2008. I have one other to accomplish in 2008 and that is getting my
first book for The Hussies series, contracted. I'm working on it now.
After that, I will then sit down and figure out the next immediate goals. I
always have long-range goals, but immediate goals must come first to get
there. I want to keep writing for EC and enjoying it as much as I have
so far!
KR: What else would you like to tell readers out there? SP: How much I appreciate their emails, blog comments and posts on the chatlist.
Your encouraging words are what get me through those times when self-doubt
creeps in and believe me it does wiggle in. Thank you for sharing my dream
world.
KR: Thank you!
