About Melissa Schroeder

Born to an Air Force family at an Army hospital Melissa has always been a little bit screwy. She was further warped by her years of watching Monty Python and her strange family. Her love of romance novels developed after accidentally picking up a Linda Howard book. After becoming hooked, she read close to 300 novels in one year, deciding that romance was her true calling instead of the literary short stories and suspenses she had been writing. She has had over 25 short stories, novellas and novels published in four years with seven different publishers.

Being a brat she swore never to marry military. Alas, fate always has her way with mortals. She is married to an AF major with two brats of their own. They live wherever the military sticks them which for the first time in years is a place where THE BUGS DIE!

An Interview with Melissa Schroeder
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Melissa, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured work, Seducing the Saint.

MS: Thanks so much for having me!

Seducing the Saint is one of my favorite books because I just love Libby and Saint. Old lovers have to come together when Libby Wainwright's father, Brady St James' mentor goes missing. These two ex-lovers have a lot of issues. She's a woman who lives by the rules and Brady likes to break them. When she walked out on him, he thought she would be back. Not only did it take her six years, but she has been married and divorced during that time, and she isn't back for The Saint, but for his skills and connections. She's worried about her father and he's the only one she can trust. Sparks fly as they go on the search and realize there might still be a chance at love in the end.

HH: Your heroine needs the hero's help and she's a temptation he can't resist. How did this story come about?

MS: Hmm, When I first wrote it for another company a few years ago, I just needed a novella that was futuristic. The first line is the thing that came first. It figured she'd find him here. I don't do that many reunited lover stories because I figure you break up, there was a reason. And I just loved the idea of having a hero named Saint. It meant that there would be lots of chances to NOT live up to that name, lol. I love the action adventures I write because they are so difference from my contemporaries and historicals. They fight to win, play dirty to do it, and it is fun to go along for the ride. So, when these two popped up, I just knew they would make it together. I threw in my love of Indiana Jones, combined it with Star Wars, and I had a story.

HH: What do you like best about Brady?

MS: Hmm, there is so much. His smart ass comments, his ability to fit into any situation, but the thing I like best is his love for Libby. It's so sexy, but sweet at the same time.

HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story?

MS: I love doing futuristics because there are no boundaries. And, I truly loved the world so I could create more books. Hunting Mila is next and I am working on Mastering Robbie.

HH: What are you working on now?

MS: First and foremost I am working on the first book of my Cursed Clan series. It finalled in the RJ reader contest and has garnered some attention for NY publishers and agents. Then, I will get back to work on A Little Harmless Obsession and Mastering Robbie. I also have a post-apocalyptic paranormal that I want to work on.

HH: How has being a romance writer changed your life?

MS: Ahh, well, my time is no longer my own. I do have to schedule things better. With ADD, I have to be sure I get everything on the calendar, or it gets forgotten. It has made my life richer, not monetarily. I have made many friends, readers and authors, and I do cherish those friendships. We just moved and so my husband always gets the "what does your wife do" question. He has been overwhelmed at the number of coworkers who are intrigued by the profession. It gives me a jolt when someone approaches me or emails me to say they like my work. It makes me so happy that people enjoy the stories I write and can take pleasure in them.

HH: Did you really read 300 romances in a year?

MS: Yep. Now, some of them were shorter, category(Harlequin) books, but I read them. My creative writing instructor said the most important thing for a beginner writer was reading everything you could get your hands on: The good, the bad and the very, very bad. It was a way to learn the craft through those who are already published.

HH: What's the most important thing you've learned in your writing career?

MS: For me, I finally found a place I belong. My husband is military and the life of a spouse isn't that much fun. I love the travel, I LOVE meeting different people with different backgrounds, but I don't always fit in with the groups on base. I am liberal, and tend not to hide it. I wasn't a very good housewife as I clean like Peg Bundy. When I sat down to start writing again, I rediscovered a love I had lost and found myself in it. It isn't the only thing, but it is seperate from Melissa the officer's wife and the mommy.

HH: What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

MS: Ohh, reading tops the list, with my favorite movies following behind it. I have to curb my reading because I can get carried away (I spent a week reading JR Ward's series and didn't get a dang thing accomplished). I still can't understand ANYONE who walks by a bookstore without looking.

HH: What's your favorite way to network with readers?

MS: I have a chatters' loop where I send Nekkid pics and the like for their pleasure. We also keep up with each other(in case there is a disaster in the area, etc) that way. I would love to go to all the conventions, do more signings, but it just isn't possible with my husband's job. I wish I could hit every RT, including the romance readers' conventions overseas, but I just can't. So this way, I can keep up with readers wherever they are in the world. http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/melissaschroederchat.

HH: Thank you!
