An Interview with Ericka Scott
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Ericka, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured work, The Werewolf Whisperer.ES: Celebrity dog trainer, Serena O'Toole, had the perfect life. She has a boyfriend, kind of, and a job she loves, well, she used to love it. And the audition for a national television spot could skyrocket her dog training show, “Woof”, to the stars…if it doesn't bore her to death first. Then, when she thought things couldn't get any worse, a sexy-voiced stranger calls to tell her that her brother, Michael, is missing. He's hiding in the desert outside his new home in Eclipse, California . It only takes her a few minutes to pack her bags and head off to a town not marked on any map.
The last thing Jackson Hardy wanted to do was to involve another civilian. But, unless the horror writer, Michael O'Toole, was found in the next two days, he would die. But, from the moment Serena's black VW Beetle rolls into town, Jackson knows he's lost his heart. He can't keep his mind, or his hands, off her. She's beautiful, talented, irresistible. Everyone in town notices her charms… Everyone . But Jackson knows to fall in love with her, and make love to her, would be a fatal mistake.
When Michael is found, Serena decides to stay and get to know Jackson better. When she looks in his eyes, she realizes he exudes a sex appeal she is helpless to deny. Nor does she want to. But for a man who can't keep his hands off her, Jackson is sure in a surprising hurry for her to leave. But someone in Eclipse is equally determined for her to stay…forever.
HH: I LOVE that title. It comes along with a great thought before you even read more about it. Tell us where you got the idea for this wonderful story? ES: When my in-laws were visiting, we watched a lot more television than usual. Now, we faithfully watch The Ghost Whisperer, but during their visit we watched The Dog Whisperer. I was looking for a premise for a werewolf story...and what's is a werewolf? A really big dog (kind-of anyway) and the title and story was born.
HH: What did you enjoy about writing this story?
ES: All stories are fun to write, but this one takes place in a remote part of the desert near where I live. So I was able to get a lot of local color and atmosphere just by taking a short drive out into the desert and setting my imagination loose.
HH: What do you admire most about Serena? ES: She's very human. Although she thinks she has all the answers, it was fun turning her world upside down and making her fall in love with someone who she only thinks she can "train."
HH: How did you come up with the town Eclipse? ES: I wanted to create a secret town. But with satellite and GPS, it would be hard to keep a town like that off the map without the government's help. Once I'd created the backstory of how the werewolves came to be, the rest of the town came easily.
HH: What are you working on now?
ES: I am currently plotting out a “twist” to the classic sorcerer’s apprentice story that involves shifters. Needless to say, anything that can go wrong will. And it’s going to be up to a very sexy big cat (or two) to save the day.
HH: Ericka, you're nothing if not prolific. <g> What sort of writing schedule do you keep?
ES: I try to write an hour every day. That sometimes equates to 100 words and sometimes to 2500.
HH: What's a typical writing day for you? ES: Well, nothing is ever typical in my household. Mornings are usually filled with reading my e-mail, getting out and promoting my books, updating my website, anything that I can do with constant interruptions from my kids (a teenager and two preschoolers). Then, in the afternoon, while my little ones “rest”, I try to squeeze in an hour of writing. In the evenings, I try to write a bit more after dinner while the kids are outside playing before bedtime - that is if I don't have to tackle the pile of never-ending laundry.
HH: What do you do when you get stuck in a story? ES: Funny you should ask, I have three of those on my hard drive right now. Most of the time, I'll just plot through the plot until things start to come together. A couple of times, I've put stories aside to stew on back burners. I've found that sometimes a story has to percolate for a while before it can be written.
HH: What are you looking forward to in the remainder of 2008? ES:I have a novella coming out from Total E-bound in September titled Forget Me Not.
Upcoming releases (without specific release dates) are Song of Seduction and Breathless from Cobblestone Press and Out of Time being published by Phaze.
HH: Thank you!
