An Interview with Samantha Sommersby
By Katie Raines, Assistant for The Romance Studio

KR: Samantha, thanks for joining us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about the latest installment of your critically acclaimed series, Forbidden: The Revolution. How does this story continue from the last book?

SS: The Revolution is set twenty-five years after the second in the series, Forbidden: The Awakening and introduces Byron and Violet's son, Dell Renfield. Sorcerer. Sexy vampire. Special Agent. Secret weapon. In Forbidden: The Revolution, Dell is sent on a mission to Las Vegas where he encounters an old enemy of Byron's and finds the two women that had been abducted along with Dell's mother during Forbidden: The Awakening. The first woman is Rita, Byron's former consort. The second is Alex Sanchez, who was an infant at the time of the kidnapping. Alex becomes Dell's love interest. You'll still see Byron and Violet, Luna will be back. But I'm also introducing some new characters, Byron's daughter Lily, his assistant Chase, and a young werewolf names Jake who will be featured in book four, Forbidden: The Temptation. Oh - and there's also a real badass mercenary mage named Basta in the book.

KR: Where did you get the idea for the series itself?

SS: The Forbidden series, which I've been working on for the past couple years, was conceived during a flight back from London. I'd ended up having to extend my stay there because I'd fallen terribly ill. I'd thought at the time that it was food poisoning or a horrible flu. I was still in a very bad way during the flight home. I slept on and off. I was in the middle row on the plane and there were a bunch of seats across so I could stretch out. There was only one other passenger sharing the row with me and he was busy watching gay porn on his portable DVD player. Orlando Bloom was on the cover of the American Way magazine and I started thinking that he'd make a great mild-mannered vampire. Between naps I jotted down notes. By the time I landed in San Diego I had the series laid out. It turned out I didn't have food poisoning. I was severely anemic and ended up in the hospital for blood transfusions. Did my anemia inspire my vampire series? Hmmmm.

KR: What did you like best about Dell and Alexandria?

SS: I love Dell's honesty. He's irrepressible. He says what he feels and wears his heart on his sleeve. I love the fact that he has tremendous power, yet still frets about the mundane. I think that what I love most about Alex is her strength. I also admire her desire to feel connected to others and her willingness to sacrifice in order to achieve that connection.

KR: Why did you decide to become a writer?

SS: Who can resist having the chance to do what they love? My favorite Joseph Campbell quote is, "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are." Creating characters and developing stories is something that I love to do. Sharing those stories, knowing that my characters are capturing the imagination of others? That brings me joy.

KR: What has changed for you since you first published?

SS: My life has changed considerably since my first book was published. I used to work full time for a national healthcare company. I'm a licensed psychotherapist and my role there was to oversee the quality assurance and regulatory issues for the western region of their behavioral health division. It was a very demanding job, the hours were long, and I traveled a fair amount. We had a gardener, a housekeeper, hired childcare, and my favorite thing to make for dinner was reservations.

Now I get to bring my son to school every day and I'm the one that's there when class gets out. We come home and work on homework, cook together, then when my husband comes home we sit down for a quiet dinner. I'm the one doing the cleaning and the laundry. On weekends my husband and son take care of the lawn. I can honestly say that we've never been happier.

KR: What's the most valuable thing you've learned from your writing career?

SS: That the real work begins after the book is published. I find the promotional aspects more challenging than the actual writing itself. I think that's true for many authors. I've become more comfortable with personal appearances, interviews, chats, panels, and signings, but in the beginning those were really difficult for me. As a writer I was used to putting myself out there on the page, but I'm not a naturally outgoing person.

KR: How much time do you devote to your writing on everything including promotion and appearances?

SS: I'd say a minimum of twenty hours per week, a maximum of sixty hours per week. I work best when I can delve deeply into a story for 4 or 5 days then set it aside for a few weeks. So there are days when I write and days when I only work on promotion.

KR: What goals have you set for yourself in your career?

SS: I try every year to set some goals for myself. Last year I wanted to complete at least one novel and send out at least 6 agent queries. I accomplished both. No agent yet though. This year I want to finish two novels and I want to work with my fourteen-year-old son on a writing project of some kind during the summer. He's a terrific writer and we're always brainstorming YA urban fantasy plot lines. I think it would be a blast to have the chance to work on something together.

KR: What's your idea of a perfect day?

SS: I wake up in the early morning and the house is quite. I enjoy my first cup of coffee while I check my emails. I have no SPAM. I have a 5-heart review from TRS for my latest novel and an email from my editor telling me not to worry about writing to a deadline. My husband wakes up and asks if he can bring me breakfast before he leaves for the office. My son gets ready for school with absolutely no prompting. Traffic is light and I'm able to drop my son off in record time. I return home and take my 2-mile morning walk then shower. All that's left to do for the next five hours is write. I get lost in it. The words flow and pages pour out. I look up and see that it's time to pick up my son. I grab the keys and go. He hardly has any homework tonight. We stop at the grocery store and pick up food for dinner. He does his homework in the kitchen while I start cooking. By the time my husband comes home the homework is almost finished and dinner is well under way. The evening is beautiful so we open a bottle of wine and relax out on the back deck. We eat dinner around 8:00 or 8:30. The conversation is lively and filled with laughter. My son clears the table, kisses us goodnight, then he head up the stairs to shower and go to bed. While my husband does the dishes, I read the pages that I've written that day to him. It's a steamy love scene. The dishes don't get finished and we forget to put up coffee for in the morning. There are more important things to do...

KR: Thank you!
