Bryl Tyne

ATwenty-five year old social butterfly, Levi Finley couldn't be more mismatched for his middle-aged, introverted counterpart, biomedical tech, Rob Langston. What happens when two so utterly opposite men come together? Besides the hottest sex in Levi's young life? Throw in one opinionated mother, misunderstanding friends, and one hell of a birthday party at the wildest, gentleman's gentlemen club in town, and friction, a notch above wild, is bound to ensue. Will Levi allow doubts to destroy their relationship? Not if Rob has any say in the matter. But that might not be as easy as it sounds, considering Rob's preferred communication is always best unspoken.

An Interview with Bryl Tyne
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Bryl, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured book, Best Unspoken.

BT: Best Unspoken is a sexy and funny story about two men who understand each other's needs and love one another despite their differences. No one gets what 25 year old Levi Finley, the social butterfly, sees in the 44 year old introverted, Rob Langston, not Levi's mother nor his friends. When, during a wild night on the town, Levi's friends begin to sow further doubt about Rob's motives, Rob knows it's time to remind Levi why their love is best unspoken.

HH: Your story is of two men who have little in common aside from exceptional chemistry. Where did you get the idea for their sexy story?

BT: Best Unspoken was inspired by my interactions with my editor. She's awesome at her job, don't get me wrong, but our personalities couldn't be more opposite. I'm outgoing, wild, and have no problem saying what's on my mind. She's reserved and soft-spoken, in a Clark Kent kind of way. Yet, despite the expanse of our differences, we understand each other, know how to get the other to see where we're coming from to work together cohesively. The combination makes for an interesting story, focusing on perception and communication. Like Rob and Levi's relationship, sometimes things are best unspoken.

HH: What do you like best about Levi's character?

BT: His internal strength. Despite his wandering and his susceptibility to outer influence, in the midst of indecision and intimidation, though he struggles internally, he holds onto his beliefs.

HH: What do you like best about Rob and why is he perfect for Levi?

BT: I like Rob for his self-assurance. He knows what he likes, what he is, and he's not threatened in the least by others' differences. I don't know if he is perfect for Levi. I just know that they work. Rob understands Levi's proclivities for his youth and personality and enjoys being around someone as social and carefree as Levi. Personally, I think Rob likes what Levi does for him in the bedroom. ;)

HH: M/M romance has swiftly emerged as a reader favorite in the romance genre over the last few years. Why do you think it's popular with romance readers?

BT: I can only speak for myself. As a reader also, I enjoy two men in the lead roles. I've always felt that love is love regardless who you are. Now, if you ask my fangirls... they'll tell you they read the stuff because it's hot.

Okay, yes, the erotic romances are hot, some scorching, but isn't all sex hot? I don't know why m/m is so popular, unless people are just fed up with the same old romances. I mean, come on, there're only so many "secret baby" plots one can read before getting disgusted. Personally, I'd rather read about two men, shoot outs, car chases, cops and robbers, fighting fires, or beating the hell out of each other, only to turn around and score a tie in a round of wild, window-rattling, makeup sex. But, that's just me.

HH: As an author, why were you drawn to write in this genre?

BT: I'm only answering this one if you promise not to laugh. Okay. I picked up writing last April after 28 years. What got me started is the strange part. One of my kids, of all of them, my youngest, jump started my creativity.

When he was four, I had a discussion with him about his adult-like attitude and his mouth. In which, he swore he was as smart as I was because he knew all there was to know from his past lives... Last year, that same child persuaded me to watch Japanese Anime with him. After the kicking and screaming subsided (mine, not his), I gave in, deciding my kids needed some time and attention. Though, I wasn't sure a cartoon would provide the quality I preferred, I was pleasantly surprised at my kids' tastes. I guess the bombardment of Eastern philosophies started me thinking again...

A couple weeks later, I was sitting in front of my computer, reflecting on that "past lives" statement. A character and his/her plight came to mind. What if someone was reincarnated several times and still couldn't get it right? I started jotting everything down, Karmic law and all and within an hour, had an outline and character bios for my first project. I say his/her, because my character has been a boy, a man, and is now, a woman, and still can't get it right. While I was writing this story, I realized my male/male scenes came off more natural than the other pairings, more real. That's it.

After I finished that first story, I did wonder if there were markets for my kind of writing. But after a little research, I discovered many publishers had thriving lines of this stuff. Must say, I was pretty excited. My muse had returned, I was writing what I wanted, publishers were buying what I wrote, and people were waiting to read my stories! I haven't stopped since.

HH: What else do you have coming up for lucky readers?

BT: I'm putting together another Naughty Nibble for Noble Romance featuring Val and Kendra from my novella, If I Were a Lady... (tenative July 4th release). This is a special addition to the If I Were a Lady... series. Book 2 should be ready late this year or early next year.

Ravenous Romance contracted my story, VAMMP: Conquering Disession for a Gay vampire anthology later this year (title and release date TBA). And my story, EXPOSED, will be in the NERDVANA Anthology set to be released from STARbooks Press some time this Fall.

I post all new happenings on the front page of my site, bryltyne.com to keep you up to date.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

BT: Short-term? I'd like to keep a steady supply of new books going out for my readers. Enough, that if I get canned at the evil-day job, I might be able to survive (By my calculations, that means I shouldn't get myself fired for at least 5 years...looks to be problematic with my mouth). Wish me luck.

Long-term? I'm planning a YA series, writing I can let my kids read.

HH: What are you reading now?

BT: I've just finished up Erastes' Transgressions. If you're into m/m historicals, you need to read it. I'm also partway through a horror novel, Joseph D'Lacey's Garbage Man. Next, I'm moving into Alex Beecroft's False Colors, another m/m historical.

HH: What are your plans for the summer?

BT: Write...work...eat...sleep. Toss in a bit of family time. Mix and repeat. Story of my life.

HH: Thank you!
