"The reader learns just how smart Kathryn is and how much trouble she is in real close to the beginning. I loved how Kathryn's strength and intellect was made evident by her actions in all she does and how it was this part of her personality that Marc most admired. The plot moved along rather swiftly and every time I thought the conflict was resolved, the author twisted the story and engaged my emotions once again. I loved the twist she gave the tapestry and the knowledge it gave Kathryn. The love scenes between Marc and Kathryn were very explicit and emotional and when they were joined by Teinan and Logan the scenes were still explicit but the reader could tell where the real love could be found. HH: N.J., thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured book, Threads of Destiny.NJ: Thank you so much for having me here at TRS Blue. Threads of Destiny is book four in the Tapestries series. It is a time-travel/ménage a quatre, which takes place in futuristic Earth, as well as in the alternate world of Javara. The magical tapestry has gone into the future, this time, to find the right woman and lead her toward her destiny.
HH: This is the fourth book in your Tapestry series. How did the series come to be for starters? NJ: I'd wanted to write a ménage a trois for a while and had been thinking about the heroine, Christina Beaumont, for a while. I came across a book on Medieval Tapestries and my brain started to make connections. Like any author, I started asking myself "what if?"
From there, came Javara, an alternate world very much like Medieval Earth, but with a few differences. On Javara, women are scarce and brothers must share a woman-at least two men with one woman, but no more than three. Only one of them can marry her, but the other brother(s) are allowed one night a week in her bed. It created a culture where this kind of relationship was perfectly acceptable and, indeed, expected. From there, came the Garen brothers-Jarek and Marc-and the rest is history.
HH: What can you tell us about the first three books in this series? NJ: This was never supposed to be a series. Christina's Tapestry was written as a stand-alone book. But by the time I finished writing it, I knew I'd be writing more books. I fell in love with the Bakra brothers-Zaren, Bador, Garrik and Jarmon-and knew I had to tell their stories. Thus, Bakra Bride and Woven Dreams came into being.
I've strived to make each story unique, which is difficult considering there are rules that must be followed when dealing with the tapestry. It's been a challenge, but I've enjoyed each book I've written.
HH: How does Threads of Destiny continue it? NJ: Threads of Destiny picks up several years after the last book. The connection between Jarek and Christina is deeper than ever. Marc has slowly pulled away from them, recognizing their commitment to one another. He wants what they have, even though he understands it's not going to happen. Or at least that's what he thinks.
He's been dreaming about a special woman, one that touches his heart and soul. When the tapestry appears and takes him to her, he is more than ready to fight for her. But the obstacles in front of them are huge. And he only has three days to convince her to forsake her world and stay with him forever.
HH: What do you like about Marc and why is he perfect for Kathryn? NJ: Marc is unique. I received more emails from readers about Marc than about any other character I've ever written. He's smart and strong, with a streak of loyalty a mile wide. He had integrity and so much love to give to the right woman. Kathryn's a woman of science who has never felt sure of herself as a female. She's been raised in a cold, sterile environment with a parent who is emotionally abusive. In spite of that, she's smart, dedicated and loyal.
Even though they come from different worlds, they have a lot in common, and Marc is definitely the right man to unleash Kathryn's sexuality and encourage her to claim her power as a woman.
HH: Sensual scenes with multiple partners are very popular today in the romance genre. In your opinion, why is that so?
NJ: I think it's because it's the ultimate fantasy. What woman doesn't dream of having, not only one, but two or more partners who genuinely care for her and want to please her. The whole "taboo" aspect of it also makes it exciting. The thrill of the forbidden is always a lure, and a book is a safe place to experience it. Plus, in a romance, you know you're going to get your happily-ever-after, which just adds to the entire experience.
HH: What challenge is there for you as the author in writing such scenes with the eroticism readers desire and while making it relevant to the story? NJ: The challenge is to always make the sensual scenes relevant to the book. I want to show the emotions and thoughts of the characters, and allow readers the opportunity to learn more about the hero and heroine. A sensual scene, whether it features two, three, or four partners, is first and foremost about connection. That's what romance is all about. The sex just allows for a deep expression of these emotions. Everything is heightened in a sexual situation.
HH: Will there be more books in this series? NJ: Absolutely. I'm hoping to start work on the next one later this year. Right now, I have two more books in mind for this series. After that, we'll see how it goes.
HH: What are you working on now? NJ: I'm currently working on a futuristic series, featuring characters readers have met before. I don't want to say any more than that right now as they haven't been contracted yet. I wrote two books back-to-back, though, as I was so into the post-apocalyptic, futuristic Earth…and the sexy heroes.
HH: Are you attending any conferences or other events this year? NJ: Unfortunately, I won't be attending any conferences or events this year. Living outside the United States makes travel there very expensive. I had hoped to attend the Romantic Times convention in Orlando this year, but it just didn't happen. Maybe next year.
