An Interview with Regina Paul
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Regina, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured book, Homecoming.

RP: I loved writing Homecoming, of course I'm a big fan of m/m romance, so it's no surprise that I decided to write one. LOL

While the setting of Homecoming is in the future and on a colony planet of Earth's, I think the issues it sets forth are timeless. Crew who is younger gives up the love of Eagle in order to fullfill his dreams of going into space. Of course as with anything else when you choose one thing over another, there are consequences. The story focuses on those consequences, and what happens when Crew finally returns six years later.

Here's the blurb for Homecoming:

Crew left his older lover Eagle to go into space, realizing his lifelong dream. He was not ready to settle down when Eagle wanted to make their bond formal. Eagle, a professor, has no use for space faring. Crew knows Eagle was deeply hurt and angered by what he believed was Crew's desertion.

Now Crew is back. He's not sure what kind of homecoming he will find. Will the man who still holds the keys to his heart and desire make him welcome or only tease and then reject him in revenge?

HH: One man chose between his dream and his lover. Now he's back. Where did you get the idea for this sexy tale of two men who could be the key to each other's happiness?

RP: Well, in addition to being a fan of m/m romance, I also absolutely adore anything science fiction as well. I'm honestly not sure where the idea came from exactly. I was brainstorming several ideas for stories at the time and this was just one that popped into my head. I wanted to see if I could successfully combine two of my favorite genres m/m romance and science fiction. I also love the ideas of love redeeming people, forgiveness, and second chances and these are all powerful themes in this story.

HH: What sort of research did you do to bring this story so convincing to life?

RP: Well, this story is purely from my imagination, didn't do a lick of research for it. I believe in the importance of showing readers through my writing what I can see in my mind, so it looks like I accomplished that goal with this story!

HH: What did you like best about Crew and how do you relate to him?

RP: I love Crew's go-gettedness I guess is the best way to explain it. Not sure if that's really a word, but you get my meaning. He wasn't afraid to reach out for what he wanted and take it, even if it meant he had to give something else up. Crew knows that if he stayed planetside like Eagle wanted, he would always regret that he didn't follow his dream. I'm in awe of his courage, and quite honestly don't know if I could have been that brave. I relate to him in that in some respects he reminds me of myself. Most of my friends and family thought I was nuts to think I could make a career out of writing, but it is and was my dream and so I pursued it just like Crew pursued his dream, and just like Crew I had to give some things up.

HH: What did you like best about Eagle and why is he perfect for Crew?

RP: I love Eagle's maturity, and his understanding that he didn't own Crew, that he had to let him go. He's perfect for Crew because while he is not personally a fan of spacefaring, he is a fan of Crew and as such was willing to let him go and pursue his dream.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

RP: Oh, some very good stuff is in store for readers. LOL I have a new story that's going to be part of a new anthology from Amira Press called Mating Season. If you're a fan of my romantic suspense stories, and or Destiny's Choices, or you like stories about Native Americans then you'll love No Place to Run! I don't have a release date for it yet, but here's a little blurb for you:

Lin Chen carries a strong bloodline from the Bunun tribe. On the run from an abusive ex-husband, she has left her native Taiwan hoping to draw her ex away from her family. Driving through North Dakota, a winter blizzard forces Lin to stop on the Standing Rock Reservation. There she meets Kyle Little Eagle, a medicine man. While, it isn’t long before they are close, her ex is not far behind. Can Lin overcome her fear of men, and let Kyle help her? Can love and a mutual connection to the spirit world prevent her worst fears from being realized?

I've also just published a non-fiction e-book that readers who are interested in freelance writing will love! It's called Recession Proof Your Income, Become a Freelance Writer Today! It's a great e-book that takes the reader step by step through how they can get set up to make a full-time income from freelance writing. HH: What can you tell us about your passions for 3D art and Native American beadwork?

RP: Well, I've always been creative. I started teaching myself to create Native American beadwork when I was just a teenager. For me it was a way to connect to my Native American ancestry, and creating beadwork has always been a way for me to stay connected spiritually to that. Some of my early pieces were a little shall we say lopsided, but fortunately, an elder took the time to show me some tricks and I was off to the races from there. I love to create my own designs and color schemes for pieces, and there is nothing like seeing what I have in my head come alive in a finished piece of beadwork.

The 3D art kick came much later when I published my first novel. That first novel was self-published and I desperately needed a cover for it, and could not pay anyone to do a cover. I stumbled on Daz, a company that specializes in 3D art applications and other goodies. I tried Daz Studio which was this company's free software and liked it, but it had limitations, so when Content Paradise offered a copy of Poser 5, a more advanced program for free, I grabbed my copy. I've since graduated to Poser 6, but I really love the program. My biggest problem back in the day was that I needed cover art, but couldn't draw. Imagine my surprise when I discovered I could use Poser to create the artwork for my cover, and I didn't need to draw! Of course as I learned the program and began to play with it and other graphics programs, I found myself creating not just covers but other pieces of art simply for the joy of creating art alone. Now, I regularly create 3D art and make desktop backgrounds for my readers. Someday when I'm better at texturing and can take the time to learn 3D modeling I want to create historically accurate clothing for Poser figures, because let me tell you, there is some very not historically accurate stuff out there. Every time I see some buxom, long haired, buckskin bikini clad Indian maiden riding a horse as being somebody's idea of historically accurate, I just have to cringe. However, that is for the future.

HH: What are you reading now?

RP: I'm reading the new shifter book by Christine Feehan, Burning Wild.

HH: What do you consider a good writing day?

RP: A good writing day is when I finish several articles and get ten or so pages done on one of my stories.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

RP: I want to finish the rest of my fiction WIP's in 2009 and submit them to publishers and then maybe finish another non-fiction book, the topic is yet to be determined.

HH: Thank you!
