An Interview with Cheryl Dragon
By Holly Hewson, Assistant for The Romance Studio

HH: Thank you for joining us, Cheryl, to talk about your featured work, Outsmarting the Moon.

CD: Thanks for letting me share a bit about Outsmarting the Moon. My first werewolf story and such fun to write! It's not your normal shifter story. Our hero was bitten and wants his humanity back. Our heroine has the cure and she's out hunting werewolves she can help.

HH: A nice twist on the hunter and hunted story. The heroine catches the hero - in werewolf form no less. <g>> Where did you get the idea for this sizzling story?

CD: I found myself missing the classic werewolf, lone creature of the night who doesn't want to change at the call of every full moon. It's not his natural state. He just wants to be human again and get his life back. He wasn't born a werewolf and is part of no pack. To make that work, I needed a heroine with a cure, a cage in her basement, and experience with werewolves. It all just fell into place.

HH: So there's also the promise of a cure. How much is that a factor in your story?

CD: The cure is the key, without it he'd have to learn to live with the werewolf condition and be a danger to all three nights a month. Without a cure, he'd remain a tragic werewolf figure. Even if he found a pack, he'd never get to be his human self again. The hero wants to be restored, without it he can't give his heart to anyone.

HH: How hard is it to make a good werewolf story stand out now in a crowded market?

CD: If I didn't have a unique hook, I don't think I'd have tried writing a werewolf. I love a challenge and as much as I enjoy the new pack werewolf stories, I wanted to do the hero who wasn't born a werewolf and who belonged nowhere now because he was bitten. The cure and a kick ass heroine with a tranquilizer gun were such a pleasure to write and I hope a unique twist to read. We've all seen the werewolf hero and the heroine must learn to accept his true nature...in this story she knows and she can give him the freedom he wants if he trusts her with his life.

HH: To you, what's the key to writing a good story of any genre that grabs the reader and won't let go?

CD: The characters, I think, are the key. The readers have to cheer and cry for them. Our heroine puts her life in danger to help others. Our hero wants what was taken from him, his humnaity. He also goes to great lengths not to hurt anyone while in werewolf form. What's not to like? Loving the characters, wanting them to find happiness, and enjoying the heat is what makes a reader connect to a story.

HH: You've been incredibly prolific these days. How much time do you spend actually writing?

CD: My prolific appearance is a bit deceiving. I'm booked ahead with both Ellora's Cave and Loose Id, into 09 in fact...so I'm in no way rushed to write. I tend to write in spurts, where stories fly out of my fingers quickly and then I slow down to edit. I have no idea how much time I spend writing because it's not a set time daily or weekly. I spend as much time writing as I can. I enjoy it:)

HH: How much time is devoted to promotion and everything else?

CD: Probably not enough. I have a day job so promotion takes a backseat to it and writing. I do my best to chat once or twice a month at places. I blog every month. I'm going to RT 09 in Orlando and am on the faery court. I take out book cover ads and do interviews. It's hard to be everywhere but I try to have a good web presence.

My website www.cheryldragon.com http://www.cheryldragon.com is the core of my promotion, it has lots of coming soon titles with blurbs, covers, etc....so people can always find what is coming up and with what publisher. There are also links to excerpts, reviews, and more so people can get a feel for what I write. And I'm on my space at www.myspace.com/cheryldragon for those who want more friends!

For all the promo authors do, the best promotion is a good book...I feel if I get the name and the cover out there, that's the biggest part of the job. Once the reader knows about me and where to find my books, it's a matter of them reading the blurb and excerpt and deciding if it's for them or not.

HH: What is the most rewarding part of everything you do?

CD: When I finish a book and know it works. That is the best feeling! A good review, a good email from readers is equally thrilling...but when I'm pleased with a book and know it hit just the right tone it really is satisfying.

HH: How do you keep the writing process fresh and exciting for yourself?

CD: I mix up the genres, that certainly helps. I write a variety and never let myself get bored. Unique characters and a unique storyline are important to keep me interested and hopefully the readers enjoy the fresh feel.

HH: What have you read recently that you really enjoyed?

CD: Lol! the only thing i've read recently is my new house contract. I'm in the process of moving and my books are packed, my computer time limited, and I'm going through terrible withdrawal....soon, it'll be back to normal soon!

Thanks so much for sharing Outsmarting the Moon with me:)

HH: Thank you!
