An Interview with Isabelle Drake
By Katie Raines Assistant for The Romance Studio

KR: Isabelle, thanks for joining us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured work, Hard Fall.

ID: When I started Hard Fall I knew I wanted to write something fun with an adventurous couple. Brooke is an artist about to open her own art gallery, and Liam is the builder working on her new gallery space. But they don’t know about their connection when they first meet.

KR: o two people stepping out of their comfort zone for different reasons meet up and create sparks. Where did you get the idea for this sizzling tale?

ID: It came from the characters. I needed a situation to move Brooke away from her usual self, but I wanted it to be something light hearted and something she herself made happen. She knows she needs to shake herself up, so she does. I like characters who know what they want and go after it.

KR: What do you like best about Liam?

ID: His sense of fun, oh--and that he’s strong and confident without being pushy.

KR: What was your favorite part of writing this story?

ID: I spent some time in Boston, so writing the story brought back great memories. Boston in the fall is fantastic. For the characters, I liked seeing Brooke grow as an artist. She needed that last little push to believe in herself and Liam was the perfect man to do just that.

KR: Isabelle, how did you get your start as a writer?

ID: Writing confessions. My first story was published in True Confessions; after that I had stories in True Love and True Story. After that I wrote some traditional romances, some chick lit. I’ve been writing erotic romances for about three years.

KR: How have things changed for you since then?

ID: One thing that hasn’t changed is that I still enjoy writing. For a while I tried to convince myself that I needed to stick to one genre, but I gave up on that. I guess that’s what has changed, I’ve accepted who I am as a writer.

KR: What do you enjoy about writing?

ID: Characters who surprise me by doing things I don’t expect, stories that take a twist in a new direction. I always follow the characters and stories; they definitely know better.

KR: What challenges do you face in your career?

ID: Time. And patience. I want to write everything all at once, but I can’t because then I’d never finish anything. So I have to decide what to work on. However, I still manage to be working on a couple things at once. Doesn’t really make sense, does it? Maybe my true challenge is to not make myself crazy.

KR: What goals have you set for yourself at this point?

ID: To invent a time machine. Not so I can time travel, so I can make more time. If I can’t swing that, I’ll keep working with the time I have. I’d like to develop a series, that’s something I haven’t done yet.

KR: What would you like to tell readers out there?

ID: Thanks! The reader support I’ve gotten—emails, stopping by to say hi at signings, notes in the mail—has been awesome. I dedicated Hard Fall to my readers because I want them to know how much I appreciate them.

KR: Thank you!
