An Interview with Annaliese Evans
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Annaliese, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, Night's Rose. AE Night's Rose is a historical urban fantasy romance with the "real" Sleeping Beauty as the ogre-slaying heroine and two supernatural men--one fairy and one vampire--as her heroes.
HH: This is a different take on the traditional Sleeping Beauty tale. Where did you get the idea for this amazing tale? AE: I've always been fascinated by the older, gorier, decidedly not-child-friendly versions of well known fairy tales. The particular version of Sleeping Beauty I used in this book is tragic and horrible and, when I read it, completely captured my imagination. What would a woman who'd been through something like that really do with her life? Would she run off with Prince Charming? Or would she seek vengeance? I decided vengeance was the much more interesting option.
HH: Rosemarie isn't a fragile princess waiting for rescue. What do you admire most about her?
AE: I admire the journey she begins in this book, the way she learns to overcome her fear and her horrible past and begin to reclaim her life. That's even braver than slaying ogres in my book.
HH: How did you approach world building for this story, knowing readers will have a few preconceived notions at the start? AE: As I said, I simply imagined what this woman would have had to live through and how that would have shaped her. I hoped that if my character was strong enough, my readers would put aside their preconceived notions and go along for the ride with this new Beauty.
HH: As a writer, how do you plan the work to keep the reader guessing until the last page? AE: First I figure out who the bad guy is and what they want, decide where I'm going to plant the clues for my readers, then work as hard as I can to forget all that and keep myself guessing. It's more fun that way!
HH: What can you tell us about the second story in the Night Rose series, The Prince of Frogs? AE: The Prince of Frogs (September 09 from Tor Romance) is Gareth's fairy tale and I'm sure you can guess who he's meant to be. Finding out why he's our Frog Prince, however, is a big part of the mystery in book two so I won't give that away. I will say, however, that there's even more danger and romance in book two. It's one of my favorite books I've written thus far and I really hope readers will enjoy it.
HH: Will there be more in this series? AE: There is one more book planned in the series, Ambrose's story, but you'll have to check my website for word on whether that book will make it to the shelves. Hopefully the readers will make it clear they want book three and I'll be working on that soon!
HH: What are you working on now? AE: I'm working on an "Anna" book (I also write erotic and paranormal romance as Anna J. Evans) titled, Kissed by Darkness about a blind woman who acquires the ability to see people who are about to die. First she sees you, then you die...creepy stuff! And, of course, there's a very hunky hero who helps her solve a string of murders. Can't have an Anna book without a hunky hero. That will be a Signet Eclipse release in May 2010.
HH: What do you enjoy reading? AE: Everything, but I'm on a real contemporary Young Adult kick right now. I love reading the opposite of what I'm writing.
HH: Will you be making an appearances this year at conventions or other events? AE: I'll be at the Romantic Times Convention in Orlando so please stop by and see me! I love to hear from readers.
Thanks so much for the interview Holly!
HH: Thank you!
