An Interview with Angela Kay Austin
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Angela, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Give Me Everything and features two very special characters who've endured so much. Where did you get the idea for their emotionally-engaging story?
AKA: I write a lot of stories that are set in a business environment because I love the dynamic of that choice in life. So many of us face that choice: financial security or love. We never seem to find the right balance. For a lot of my male friends that means they usually pick a certain type of woman who "fits" with their idea of perfect. And for my female friends the same thing applies. But, what usually seems to happen is that first choice rarely works out, and when they do it the second time around, if they can get out of their own way, they open themselves up to really finding what their hearts want and need.
For LaKia and Kendis, it was easy enough to find material for their stories because of different places I'd worked and different things I'd seen and heard in those environments. I mashed it all together and tried to create two people I hope readers can connect with.
HH: What do you like best about your heroine and why will readers empathize with her?
AKA: I think readers will connect with LaKia because, if they've been hurt before, they will understand why she focuses on what she thinks she can control. Sometimes it feels easier, and it allows you to just think you can actually control some things.
HH: What do you like best about your hero and why will readers love him?
AKA: Kendis' name actually means warrior. I love him because he really doesn't care about the opinions of those outside of his world. He focuses on what he wants and goes after it. And if he decides something's not right, he's not afraid to change and do what needs to be done, regardless of the consequences he might face.
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story and what do you think readers will take away from it?
AKA: Making the two characters fit together. That's always fun for me. I can sit at my computer all day and write, but if I don't find that "spot" where the two characters fit and move forward...nothing else matters. I think readers will love that part of the dance between the two characters. I also hope they'll love the opening scene. I actually went white water rafting, and then wrote that scene. A girl has to do her research :-)
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
AKA: I'm working on a few new pieces. One will be based in my hometown of Memphis, TN. It will be a fun read for everyone. I hope it'll feel a little like a tour for those who've never visited before.
HH: How does 2013 promise to be different from 2012 for you?
AKA: 2013 readers will be able to bump into me a little bit more at book fairs, and I'm hoping to have one novella and two short stories released.
HH: Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
AKA: Everywhere! I am a huge eavesdropper. I get a lot of dialogue and story ideas from that. I'm forever scribbling notes in my notebook. That allows me not to forget. Also, that's one of my favorite methods of adding in different types of character traits into my story. Plot points come from conversations to news stories. Basically, I keep my eyes and ears open everywhere I go :-) I'd hate to miss something.
HH: What's your writing schedule like?
AKA: Night :-) I do it all at night. After my 9-5, when everything is quiet, that's when I write. It seems to be the best time for me to relax and let my fingers do all the thinking.
HH: What's your favorite way to interact with readers?
AKA: In person. I love to talk with readers at book fairs. It's a great feeling to know that there are people out there like me who enjoy reading a book. And when it's one of mine, "wow!" that's just amazing.
HH: What are you most looking forward to in 2013?
AKA: Attending RT 2013! I met so many authors I've loved for so many years, and I met some awesome new friends. I'm looking forward to seeing them all again. And, of course, I'm looking forward to meeting the readers!
HH: Thank you!
