Reviews for In The Dark
"IN THE DARK went far beyond my expectations. P. G. Forte brilliantly blends past and present, capturing the mood of both the sixties and the current time frame. I was intrigued by the plot as soon as I started reading and there were just enough tidbits to keep me hooked until the end. Ms. Forte sheds light on both the sexy side as well as the more animalistic side of the vampire. The storyline is complex and there are several secondary stories added into the mix that are just as compelling. This will appeal to both suspense and paranormal enthusiasts a like. I definitely look forward to the next release." - 4.5 blue ribbons, Pamela Denise, Romance Junkies

About P.G. Forte
When she's not pestering her husband to help her research scenes for upcoming books, or being entertained by her vastly amusing children, she can usually be found serving the needs and whims of her characters... and her cats.
It's a difficult job, but someone has to do it.

An Interview with P.G. Forte
By Holly Hewson for The Romance StudioHH: P.G., thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, In The Dark. PG: In the Dark is actually two stories in one. There's the love story that takes place in 1968-69 and results in the birth of the twins (Marc and Julie). Then there's the mystery that occurs in the present day, which Marc and Julie must solve in order to save the life of their sire.
In the first story, you have a lonely, jaded, world-weary vampire who falls for a beautiful, young hippie. Conrad is somewhat stuck in his ways. Suzanne is an irrepressible free spirit. They're fascinated with each other, drive each other totally crazy, fall hopelessly in love...and make some pretty serious errors in judgement along the way.
The second story is mostly a mystery—although it's actually part of a longer and much more complicated love story, as well. It's forty years later, the twins are now grown up and they're suddenly called upon to help their "uncle" Damian find Conrad, who's disappeared. In the course of finding him, they also find out many things they never knew about themselves.
HH: So your main characters are twin vampires thrust into a world they aren't prepared for. Where did you get the idea for their amazing story? PG: You know, I think some of my best book ideas have sprung from conversations. In this case, it was a conversation about paranormal/immortal creatures and what you'd do with your time if you knew you'd likely live forever. Because I don't honestly think attending high school over and over again is anybody's idea of a fun way to pass the centuries!
I originally thought Marc and Julie were going to turn into a sort of vampire detective team, solving mysteries among the paranormal community—which does sort of happen—but ut the books are definitely turning out to be more love story than mystery. Which I realize is something of a pattern for me. I think it's because my stories are so character-driven.
HH: How did you approach world-building for this project? PG: The very first thing I decided was that my vampires would have to have some scientific plausibility to explain why they are the way they are. So they're not just re-animated corpses. Their hearts beat, their blood circulates. They're not hell spawn. They haven't "lost their souls." They haven't suddenly become invisible in mirrors. And so on. But they're also not just exceptionally strong people with big teeth, bad attitudes and strange food cravings. They're kind of a blended species and the "undead" part comes from the fact that after they're turned their bodies go through a sort of metamorphosis, during which they apear to be lifeless for up to several days.
Marc is firmly of the opinion that vampires evolved from some form of extraterrestrial life—and that's kind of my take on it too. I took all the weird facts I could find about venomous snakes, parasitic insects, crocodiles, vampire bats, banana slugs, etc. tossed them all together and played what-if. I have to say, I'm really very proud of the results.
HH: What do you like best about each Marc and Julie? PG: Oh...good question. Let me see... Well, one thing I really like is the way they view themselves -— and the way in which that changes as the book goes on. And then continues to evolve over the course of the series.
Marc has never really felt comfortable thinking of himself as a vampire. He doesn't want to be different. He definitely doesn't want to have to think of himself as being a demon! So he's really struggled with his identity. Finding Conrad —- and saving his life -— is going to require Marc to immerse himself in the world of vampires. He's going to draw strength from that and really start to see himself for who and what he is.
Julie, on the other hand, has always loved being a vampire. She's been at the top of the food chain her whole life and she's pretty sure that's where she belongs. Suddenly, she finds herself surrounded by an entire vampire society she never knew existed -- and most of them are bigger and badder than she figures she's ever going to be. So, it's an adjustment. Eventually she'll find her balance, but it's going to take some time.
HH: Is this the start of a series? Or will there by more stories like this one? PG: Right now, I have a four more books planned for the series. I thought for awhile it was going to be a trilogy, but there was just too much stuff going on to squeeze it all into three books. It's also possible the series might continue beyond five books. In book three, Julie acquires a contact in the SFPD. I'm thinking he could prove very useful to her in future books.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? PG: Right now I'm working on books two and three in this series. I've also recently completed a short m/m paranormal that I'm shopping around. I don't think that's going to be part of a series, but you never know!
HH: What's a typical day like for you? PG: Well, too much of it is spent in front of my computer, I'll tell you that. Or, rather, my husband will...I think it's his biggest complaint. That and our increased cat population—which really wasn't my fault. With the kids mostly on their own, more cats arrived to fill the void. So cat herding has become my new chief occupation.
HH: What do you consider a really satisfying writing day? PG: Any day that I can finish a chapter—or a particularly challenging scene—and not end up hating either the book or the characters is a good day. LOL!
HH: What do you personally enjoy reading? PG: My reading habits tend to mirror my writing habits...or is that the other way around? So paranormal erotic romantic suspense probably tops my list. However I also read a lot more historical romance, m/m romance and mysteries than I write. At least so far.
HH: What would you most like to accomplish this year? PG: I'd definitely like to finish the two books I'm working on! That shouldn't be too hard, but life sometimes has a tendency to get in the way. I'd also like to do a little more traveling. I've had a couple of really sedentary years (moving doesn't count) and I miss it. Of course, there are the cats to consider...
HH: Thank you!
