An Interview with J.A. Garland
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: J.A., thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Instinct. Where did the idea for this sexy thriller originate?
JA: I am a dedicated morning person. I get up before the sun, around 5am. I then drink a carafe of coffee--I'm not joking, I have the blood pressure to show for it, lol. Then I go for a run. I run at least 6 days a week. My favorite place to run is at a nearby park. 500 acres of trails, I love it! When I run I think about the next chapter of my current W.I.P. So by the time I get home, I am all ready to have at the computer.
HH: What can you tell us about Rory and why will readers love him?
JA: Rory is a good guy, but he's had a tough time of things. All he wants is to do his job and forget about his screwed-up childhood. The object of a botched assassination attempt, he's launched into a complicated world where the one person who holds the answers, will only share them at a heavy price...his complete trust.
HH: What will readers like about Amber and why will they relate to her?
JA: Amber is a feisty woman who holds the key to Rory's problems. But her secrets are just as dark and deep as Rory's, and she's not talking until he discloses his past.
HH: How did you go about creating the world where their story takes place?
JA: The world is an exciting place, but it wouldn't it be more exciting if 'Otherkind' creatures existed? Like demons, werewolves, vampires, shapeshifters, etc? Instinct is book one in a series where Shadow creatures--paranormal beings refuse to fly under the humans radar--come out to play. The National Otherkind Administration (NOA) is responsible for overseeing human/Otherkind interactions. Utilizing Analysts, they collect information on the Shadows. If they believe an infraction of the Otherkind Agreements exists, they send in the Trackers. At the top of the food chain is the Otherkind Council. They act as judge and jury, and have become celebrities of sorts in the eyes of the Otherkind. My series follows several key players on both sides of the table. My books all share this common theme, or 'world.'
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
JA: I just finished book two of the Halfling Chronicles. Without giving anything away, The Dysus Dreamer pursues the origins of the Halflings and the Shadow creatures who wish to control them. Oh, and Slade, there's lots of Slade!
HH: How did you get your start as a writer?
JA: Well, initially I wanted to become a jet fighter pilot, doesn't everyone? Okay, so that was just a phase...following the movie Top Gun. I wanted to be a writer from early on, but as life has a way of doing, it moved me in a different direction. Sure, becoming and being a firefighter is full of rewards. I love serving the public. But writing is a release--an addictive freedom. I am very lucky to enjoy two such different, and spectacular careers in one lifetime.
HH: What do you enjoy most about your writing career?
JA: That moment when you get a clunky sentence 'just right'.
HH: Will you be making any appearances in the remainder of 2012?
JA: To celebrate Instinct's release, I have set-up a busy blog tour for September. There will be many chances to win that Big Bag O'Swag! Stop by my website to see the daily schedule.
HH: What are your plans for the fall at the moment?
JA: My fire department is sending me to an academy in the fall. My plans are to keep running and lifting more weights so I can smoke the boys on the obstacle courses!
HH: What would you most like to accomplish before year's end?
JA: Spending more time with my family. The upcoming academy is a long one, six months, so I want to spend as much time with everyone before I leave. Having wrapped up the second book in my series, The Dysus Dreamer, I should have lots of time on my hands. Top
HH: Thank you!
