About Felicity Heaton

Felicity Heaton is a romance author writing as both Felicity Heaton and F E Heaton. She is passionate about penning paranormal tales full of vampires, witches, werewolves, angels and shape-shifters, and has been interested in all things preternatural and fantastical since she was just a child. Her other passion is science-fiction and she likes nothing more than to immerse herself in a whole new universe and the amazing species therein. She used to while away days at school and college dreaming of vampires, werewolves and witches, or being lost in space, and used to while away evenings watching movies about them or reading gothic horror stories, science-fiction and romances.

Having tried her hand at various romance genres, it was only natural for her to turn her focus back to the paranormal, fantasy and science-fiction worlds she enjoys so much. She loves to write seductive, sexy and strong vampires, werewolves, witches, angels and alien species. The worlds she often dreams up for them are vicious, dark and dangerous, reflecting aspects of the heroines and heroes, but her characters also love deeply, laugh, cry and feel every emotion as keenly as anyone does. She makes no excuses for the darkness surrounding them, especially the paranormal creatures, and says that this is their world. She's just honoured to write down their adventures.

An Interview with Felicity Heaton
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Felicity, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Forbidden Blood. Where did you get the idea for this unique vampire tale to begin with?

FH: I was thinking about vampires and writing something a little different from the other vampire romances I had written before. I wanted to explore a new world and a new type of vampire, one who was born rather than turned, and dreamed up this whole society of vampires. From there, I decided to take one of those vampires and plunge him into a position he didn't want and also force him from his family at the same time. It sounds cruel, but I wanted a hero who had lost everything he had loved and was left with a duty he didn't want as the only thing to sustain him through the centuries. At the same time as kicking Kearn out of his family, I thought about what sort of power he might have, both his abilities given to him genetically from his parents and also the powers granted to him by the Sovereignty. The Sovereignty are a group of nine beings who watch over the nine species of demon in this world, governing them and sending a Venator in to dispose of any who break the law. Kearn is a Venator, and at the start of Forbidden Blood he's on the hunt for a Source Blood abuser he's been tracking for three years. Source Blood is a rare human blood type. Taken in large doses by a vampire, it can bestow godlike powers upon them. It's difficult to explain, but if you read the book everything is made crystal clear.

HH: What can you tell us about Amber and why will readers be drawn to her?

FH: Amber is a very strong heroine, who handles the situation she's dragged into incredibly well, but that's mostly because she is attacked by a vampire at the start and the man feeds his blood to her to keep her complacent. She's rescued by Kearn, the hero, and sees that the man who attacked her had fangs. The sight of him, and his blood in her veins, is enough to convince her that vampires exist. When Kearn tells her that she's safest with him, she isn't about to argue, and agrees to play bait for him, but not just because he promises to kill the man and that she'll be safe once he does. Amber takes what she wants and in this case she wants Kearn. He's cold, detached, and keeps his heart firmly closed off to her, but it doesn't deter her. I think readers will love her for that. She isn't about to give up on Kearn. She wants to know why he acts the way he does, and wants to understand the pain she can see in his eyes sometimes. As she learns about his past, she only grows more determined to help the man she's falling for.

HH: What do you like best about Kearn and why will readers love him?

FE: Kearn has been through a lot in life and he's come to cope with it by closing off his heart to everything and everyone, and focusing on his duty. He carries a lot of pain, both from the betrayal he suffered and the duty that the Sovereignty gave to him as a result of it. He hates his duty, despises being a Venator, but it's the only thing that keeps him going at the same time. He's in a sorry state emotionally, and needs someone warm to help him heal and open his heart again. I think readers might find him cold at first, because he is, but once they get to know him and learn why he acts the way he does, they'll love him and they'll be rooting for him to get his wish of a happily forever after with Amber.

HH: How did you go about creating the world for these characters?

FH: I spent a lot of time planning the world around this story. In fact, I spent so much time crafting the world, considering everything about it, all the little facets, that when I finished writing the book, I knew I couldn't leave the world behind. Forbidden Blood is now the first book in a series. I want to write more in the Vampire Venators series because there's still so much left to explore, so many lovely vampire heroes, so many other species of demons, and so many lucky heroines. I don't tend to have a structure when I'm building a world. I write things down as they come to me, and if I have time there and then, I'll explore them in depth, taking the idea further, or I'll come back to it at a later date. I try to layer in levels of detail, but always leave room for my imagination to expand on an idea as I write a novel.

HH: What draws you, as an author, to the paranormal genre?

FH: I've always loved everything paranormal. I used to read vampire, werewolf and witch books as a young child, and then I got into paranormal movies and television series involving those species, and then eventually I started reading paranormal romance novels. I actually started reading paranormal romances AFTER I had started writing them. Crazy but true. I love vampires most of all because I'm drawn to them. It's their mystery that lures me in, and their danger. I love them, and I think they're so flexible. There are endless things you can do with them as a writer.

HH: What else do you have in the works?

FH: I'm currently editing two more novels. First is the next book in my Her Angel series, Her Guardian Angel, which is due out on July 30th. The second story I'm editing is a stand alone novel, and another vampire romance, entitled Heart of Darkness. That will be out later in the year. I'm also gearing up to write the next novel in the Shadow & Light Trilogy, following on from the first novel, Ascension, which I released back in April.

HH: Do you own an ebook reader or read on an electronic device? If so, what?

FH: I do have an e-reader now. I was using my computer and my smart phone with Kindle apps for a while, but my husband bought me a Kindle 3 for my birthday in April. I love it.

HH: As a romance reader, what sort of stories do you personally prefer?

FH: I love dark paranormal romances. I can't stand it if the vampires don't bite and the men aren't all growly and possessive/protective of their women. I love a good over-protective hero. Yummy. The sort of books I love to read are the same as the ones I love to write. I'm really into stories by Lara Adrian, but read other authors in the paranormal romance genre too, like Gena Showalter, J R Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon.

HH: What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

FH: Ice cream or hot chocolate. I love both of those things. I almost consider reading as a guilty pleasure too as I don't often get to read these days because I'm writing so many stories and working hard to build my author platform.

HH: Any vacation or appearance plans this summer?

FH: I've just returned from Istanbul in Turkey. It was beautiful and the weather was glorious, although we did have a few showers. I loved it there. I'm off for another holiday in the middle of July too, heading back to Tuscany to explore some of the smaller places outside of Florence too.

HH: Thank you!
