Reviews for Nancy's Sweet Spelling Bee

"As for the actual review…there is more to this story than "Aw, sweet" moments, earning it 3 tombstones. The history behind Robert and Nancy’s relationship—how long they’ve loved each other, the moments that have molded their lives—was a welcome addition. It made the story seem more real and the characters seem easier to relate to. Instead of jumping in midstream, the reader gets to see the whole picture and fall in love as they do." - Bitten by Books

About Elaine Lowe

Elaine Lowe is a work-at-home mom in Silicon Valley California. Of her many part-time jobs, her favorite one by far is writing. She has a background in biotech, but she has branched out into the demanding world of home management, toddler entertainment, transcription, envelope stuffing, and of course, writing romantic and erotic fiction.

A love of history, magic and romance combines to inspire a lot of her writing. That and her wonderful husband, who is a fantastic sounding board, support system, and research consultant. He really enjoys research. And so does she.

An Interview with Elaine Lowe
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Elaine, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, Nancy's Sweet Spelling Bee.

EL: Hi! Thanks for having me here. I love the Romance Studio!

Nancy's Sweet Spelling Bee is the perfect book to put you in a good mood for Valentine's Day. It's the story of an entire relationship, all wrapped up in a proposal that almost goes awry. Robert Wakely and Nancy Gardiner have been in love since high school. They've held each other in good times and bad, and they've discovered all the best and worst things about love together. When they've both been through college and law school together and starting their professional lives, Robert thinks it's about time to propose. He plans this elaborate proposal, and the night before it is set to happen, Nancy proposes to him! He chokes and she flees. How is he going to make it up to her? Turns out, he's very very good at planning a proposal and triggering a flood of some very sexy memories. How can she resist?

HH: So how does a werewolf win back a werejaguar?

EL: Romance in the best sense of the world. Not just flowers and chocolates, but tokens that really show how he feels. He shows her that he knows her better than any one else in the world. He spells out his question with memories both sweet and incredibly sexy. With a man willing to worship you like that, it's pretty darn hard to say no! Besides, with over six feet of hot, redheaded roan wolf panting after you, it's pretty hard for a girl, or a werejaguar, to stay mad for long.

HH: What did you like best about Robert?

EL: He's a good guy. Honestly and completely in love with his woman and unafraid to show it. Although I love a "bad boy", Robert is different type of guy. Loyal, smart, focused and imaginative, Robert Wakely knows how to love a woman. If he's pissed her off, it's honestly a miscommunication. Let's face it, real men don't always say the right things. Robert knows when he's screwed up and does his damnedest to make up for it. I certainly think he succeeds. In my view, nice guys shouldn't finish last. Well, if they are really nice, they do finish last -- after completely satisfying their woman.

HH: What can you tell about the beautiful costume in your photo?

EL: Ha! *blushes* Thanks! I worked hard on assembling that. I love dressing up. Give me an occasion to wear a costume and I'm pleased as punch. I particularly love the Regency and Victorian periods, and every year I go to the Dickens Christmas Fair. It's a wonderful event where a drab county exhibition hall is transformed for a month every year into a Victorian city, with costumes, an assembly hall for dancing, stages for can-can dancers or Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, wonderful food, real British pubs, a tea house, and fabulous vendors with beautiful works of art for purchase. It's a highlight of the year for me, and that is a picture of me in costume.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

EL: I should have an erotic Regency, Wanton Venture, coming out soon. I absolutely adore this story and I think anyone with a taste for historicals will love it! It's set in Bristol, where the heroine Helena is trying to keep her father's shipping company afloat. My hero, Raymond, is a naval captain who has just inherited an impoverished earldom and needs a job. They come to a mutually beneficial agreement, in more way than one.

As for my works-in-progress, I actually have three stories I'm working on at the moment. One is part of my Passion Magic series, set in Hawaii in 1888 on the vast Parker Ranch, one of the first places in the world cowboys really existed. Another is an archeological adventure in 1955 in the Northwest Territories with a couple of characters that whisper in my ear to write more at the most inconvenient times! And I've got the sequel to Nancy's Sweet Spelling Bee about Robert's sister and her adventures on the San Francisco chocolate scene.

HH: Does being a work-at-home mom help or hinder your writing career?

EL: It certainly gives me needed flexibility if the muse strikes and I NEED to write or I shall go insane. However, it is very difficult to write romance when your six year old is bouncing around and yelling for another popsicle. Overall, I think it gives me a needed vent and a place to be an adult with my own inner life. I highly recommend writing to any Mom who wishes to maintain their sanity!

HH: What's a typical day like for you?

EL: A weekday would start with getting my son off to school and driving him there across town. By the time I come back, my wonderful husband usually has a nice cup of tea ready for me. Then it's breakfast (my son usually eats in the car, he prefers it that way), and chores. Some days, I go off to aqua-aerobics if it's not pouring rain. When my husband goes to work or I get back from the pool, then I can settle down with my laptop to work any of my several day jobs, and write if I have the time. Then around 3 it's time to pick up my son, have a snack and do some more chores with occasional tickle breaks. All through the afternoon my time is split between spurts of work, writing and dealing with a special needs six year old. Somewhere in there, dinner is cooked, my husband comes home and we eat (hopefully all together, but not necessarily). Once the nighttime routine is done and my son is asleep, it's back out to the couch for some work, some writing, and maybe some play!

HH: What do you consider a really satisfying writing day?

EL: If I don't have any other "day" work or doctor's appointments or errands and I can sit with a nice cup of hot chocolate in a café down the street and alternate between writing and people watching with the smell of coffee filling my nose. That is so damn satisfying I can practically taste it.

HH: What do you personally enjoy reading?

EL: I love history, and I read a lot of historical romance. I also love stories of alternate history, science fiction and fantasy. My latest passion is the Temeraire series from Naomi Novik, a world in which the Napoleonic wars are fought with the help of dragons. I also occasionally indulge in fanfiction about my favorite books or TV shows, and I encourage any great writers I find there to try writing original stories and submit them for publication. I started my writing career by indulging in fanfiction, and I don't see why others can't follow the same path.

HH: What would you most like to accomplish this year?

EL: I would like to write at least 3 books this year. I'm also looking forward to the EPPIE awards in March and I'm crossing my fingers on behalf of my book, Command the Wind, that will be in the running for Best Erotic Historical Romance. I'm also thrilled to see my books available on Amazon and on more and more resources like the Sony eBook store. And hopefully soon the iPad!

On a non-writing list of accomplishments, I will be undergoing bariatric surgery this year, and I have high hopes that this will help my health. I also hope to get my autistic son involved in more group activities so he can have fun participating in things like soccer and dance classes.

HH: Thank you!
