An Interview with Angela McCallister
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Angela, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Bad Mouth. Where did the idea for this amazing story originate?

AM: Oddly, from a song title, lol. I’d heard the song Bad Mouth by post-hardcore band Fugazi at least a hundred times, but one day it struck me it’d be a great vampire novel title. But there were no books with that title. So I wrote one, starting with the characters. What couple would clash more than a vampire-loathing human and a human-abusing vampire? And it just took me over from there.

HH: What do you like best about Val and why will readers identify with her?

AM: Val is not the typical kick-ass type of heroine, and some readers may even see her as weak, but that is far from the truth. There is nothing weak in owning up to your mistakes, and there’s nothing weak in facing what you’re afraid of. That takes the greatest amount of backbone in my book. She’s also very protective. Her initial anti-vampire motivation isn’t only driven by her past, but also by what she sees as mistreatment of the humans who serve the vampires.

HH: What do you like best about Kade and why will readers love him?

AM: Oh, Kade! He is so much more than the hot, vampire prince with a cruel streak as he first appears. As the truth is revealed bit by bit to the readers, they will see he is truly worthy of ruling the Immortalis. He has the weight of immense responsibility on his shoulders and will do whatever it takes to bear that weight and balance the fine line of politics between three opposing groups. And he has a rather endearing lack of filter between his thoughts and his mouth, and oh, what he can do with that mouth!

HH: How did you go about creating the world where their story takes place?

AM: I knew I wanted the vampires to be out, public, and known to humans. So it began with a simple question. What would it be like if vampires were known? What would it take to prevent conflict born of fear between vampires and humans? It made the most sense to me that there would need to be laws and regulations and transformations would need to be government controlled, which of course would require a governing entity: the Vampire Liaison Office. Regular authorities would be ill-equipped to handle any enforcement issues with vampires, so this also falls under the VLO’s umbrella of responsibility.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

AM: Well, first, there’s more to what happens in the stories than what appearances reflect, so you just might be surprised. Second, the next book in the Immortalis series, Bad Cop, releases October 28! And the hero, Killian (AKA Ian), will absolutely melt you like chocolate fondue. You’ll have a hard time seeing past his charm to his flaws, just like the heroine, Alice, does.

HH: When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

AM: As with most authors, the answer is from birth, lol. I’ve been writing in some way, shape, or form from the time I learned my letters. I, however, burned out during a two-year stretch of newspaper editorial work in college. The writing just wasn’t the same, and it slowly killed my creative soul -- temporarily. I couldn’t even face cracking open a book unless it was to read to my kids. Thirteen years later, on deployment, I broke through that burn out and took up my book a day habit again. Soon after, I began writing and finished my first novel in seven weeks. Once that happened, I couldn’t stop if my life depended on it, as if the genie was ticked about being kept in the bottle.

HH: Do you have appearances, in person or online, planned for the fall?

AM: Expect tons of online appearances! With my release of Bad Cop on Oct 28, I’ll have a big release tour and giveaway -- a Kindle Fire HD! -- and multiple blog appearances, including one of my favorite sites, GraveTells. I’m always on Facebook (so come and see me!) talking to readers, and I’ll absolutely keep updates on my appearances posted there. Hahaha, sometimes I think my readers like me more than my books! Or maybe it’s all the hottie pics I post, lol. I do have an amazing street team who are more like family to me and who I talk to daily. Oh, and I’ll be at the RT Readers’ Convention next year.

HH: What inspires you in your writing?

AM: Anything and everything! But mostly people. I get so many ideas from people around me, some I know well and others just in passing. Songs inspire me. Reading inspires me. I’m a voracious reader, around 250-300 books per year in all subgenres of romance. Well, except inspy, and I’m light on the sweet romances, too. I like a little heat in the stories or else I feel a bit cheated of the full relationship.

HH: What are you reading at the moment?

AM: Someone just recommended Sinners on Tour series so I think I’ll give that a try. I have one more book to read, The Demon’s Desire, before I’ve devoured the entire Covet Books line from my publisher, Entangled. I seriously consume them like a Halloween candy binge, and at $2.99 each, I can’t resist. I also got hooked on the Beyond series by Kit Rocha, and I think I may be dying if those ladies don’t hurry up and get the next one out!

HH: Do you celebrate Halloween, and if so, how?

AM: Halloween is my very favorite holiday! And this year I get to be with my family. We do a lot of decorating, and thanks to Facebook and Pinterest, I have some amazing ideas for this year. We all carve pumpkins picked from a patch, dress up, go trick-or-treating, and come home to watch scary movies and have glow-in-the-blacklight drinks. My kids and I bake a lot of fun treats beforehand, like my fav, cake pops. We made ghosts, skulls, hockey-masked serial killers, and alien cake pops. They’re super easy to make and everyone loves them. It’s family tradition to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show and dance the Time Warp. I cannot WAIT to get home.

HH: Thank you!
