An Interview with Rayka Mennen

HH: Rayka, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Your featured book is the fabulous Enchanted Destiny. Where did you get the idea for this sexy, mystical tale? RM: This is one of the hardest questions I get asked. From everywhere. Airport conversations, books, movies, and my head. Seriously. <grin> It's tough to pin point a source, actually. Occasionally, I'll know exactly when and where an idea hit me but usually it's from snippets of things I see, hear around.
HH: What do you like best about Kat and why will readers relate to her? RM: Kat's empathic power makes her a very calming and serene person. I'm just the opposite -- like an Energizer battery powered woman. But when you get her mad she's not afraid to stand up for herself. I like the dual-sided aspect of her character. She's not all sugar, you know? Plus she has awesome magic.
HH: What do you like best about Jake and why will readers love him? RM: Jake's the dependable, handsome guy next door. The one who helped you study for history but that you don't consider hero material until you desperately need something, and then he's there for you. How many of us went searching for the perfect hero and came home to find he was there with us all along? So, Jake is a tribute to all those wonderful men we learn to love -- long-term heroes -- they're with us for the long haul. Plus he can swagger with the best of them. lol
HH: What can you tell us about the forthcoming sequel? RM: Enchanted Desire will be released by Entangled Publishing Dec 1, 2011. This is Gina and Eric's story. You meet them in Enchanted Desire. Except, Gina is a witch who never discovered her magic, so she isn't expecting to have any visions about destined mates. Until Eric. Who by the way is the master of two week relationships. Not a combo made in heaven. Expect plenty of fireworks between these two.
HH: What else do you have in the works? RM: At given time I usually have 2 or 3 books going. Right now, besides editing Enchanted Desire, I am working on an eagle shapeshifter book based in the mythology from my native India.
HH: How do you view the future of ebooks? RM: I think ebooks are here to stay. It's another way to get books into the hands of readers faster. Quicker in terms of releases and also sales. It's eight on a Saturday, you finish up for the day, kids are in bed and you find you don't have a book. Do you run out to the nearest bookstore? No. But you could surf the internet and download an ebook. Cool. I'm all for every way I can get my books to my readers with a minimum of fuss.
HH: How much of your day is devoted to your writing career? RM: A couple of hours every morning and then about 4 hours in the evening. And at least half day over the weekend. I wish I had more time but this is the best I can do given I have a day job.
HH: What's your favorite way to interact with readers? RM: I wasn't a huge Facebook fan but I'm finding it a great way to communicate and let people know about my writing, and books, and when my characters are torturing me. <grin>.
