An Interview with Debra Mullins
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Deb, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, Tempting a Proper Lady.

DM: Tempting A Proper Lady is Book 1 of the Brides of Nevarton Chase trilogy. In this first book, our heroine Cilla Burke is trying to set herself up in business planning the weddings of English debutantes. Her first customer -- the one who is going to make her career -- is American heiress Annabelle Bailey, who is engaged to an English earl. Enter our hero, American sea captain Samuel Breedlove, Annabelle’s former suitor. Everyone thinks he abandoned Annabelle for life at sea, when in reality her new fiancé had attempted to kill him. Now Samuel is trying to stop Annabelle from marrying a murderer, but to do that, he needs to convince Cilla to help him sabotage the wedding.

HH: A very proper wedding planner and a handsome sea captain join forces to stop a much anticipated wedding. Where did you get the idea for their amazing story?

DM: I was chatting with my editor at a conference a couple of years ago, and the subject turned to weddings. She was going to be in one and I had recently gotten married. We talked about the chaos of weddings and how people act so crazy sometimes, and the germ of the idea began growing in the back of my mind.

HH: Did the story come from the setting, the Victorian era? Or did the setting come from the story?

DM: I wanted Americans in my book, and so I had to find a period of time where American and England were at peace. Plus, many of the traditions we follow in today’s weddings originated in the Victorian era, so it seemed a good fit.

HH: What unique thing can you tell us about each your hero and heroine?

DM: Cilla is a woman who doesn’t trust her own instincts about men because of the choices she has made. Samuel is a man who doesn’t think he is capable of falling in love. What a pair! <G>

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

DM: As I said, this is book 1. I have already written Book 2, Too Wicked To Love, about John Ready. That will be out in June 2011. I am also starting a contemporary paranormal trilogy for Tor books.

HH: What's the most important thing you've learned in your writing career since you first published?

DM: That writing is subjective. Not everyone is going to love my work, so I have to be true to myself and write what resonates with me.

HH: What accomplishment are you most proud of?

DM: That I’ve managed to touch people’s lives with my work. I got a letter a few years ago from a lady whose husband had been deployed to Iraq. She told me she hadn’t been able to get through a single book since he left -- until she picked up my Scandal of the Black Rose. That was the first book she had been able to finish. I still have that email. It reminds me why I do what I do, especially when the critics tend toward harsh.

HH: As an author, how do you meet all of the demands of the industry and the readers and stay sane?

DM: Who said I was sane? <g> Seriously, all I can do is write what I write. Luckily what I want to write is romance, which is very marketable. I want to entertain, to make people forget about real life for a while. And sometimes the work helps me forget about real life, too, since I get lost in the worlds I create.

HH: What are you reading right now?

DM: I just got off deadline, so I am not reading anything, but I am planning on picking up Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts when it hits the shelves tomorrow.

HH: Any big plans for the summer?

DM: Writing that first paranormal!

HH: Thank you!
