An Interview with Yolanda Sfetsos
By Holly Hewson for The Romance StudioHH: Yolanda, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, Boundless. YS: Hi, and thanks for having me here! I love dropping into TRS.
Boundless happens to be the third/final book in The Alyce Kerr, Faith Healer Trilogy. In this installment, Alyce has to deal with the fact that Ross sacrificed himself to save her but refuses to leave him there to rot. She might be stuck in a boring motel room with the very mysterious Sebastian, but is willing to do whatever it takes to save Ross.
HH: This is final story in your Faith Healer trilogy. Where did the idea for the trilogy come from? YS: Well, the idea began when I started wondering about a faith healer who could cure people because she'd conjured and bound a demon to herself. Money and fame came instantly but at the expense of having the demonic entity slowly eating her soul. I threw in an ex-fiancé she had split up with because she thought he'd tried to kill her… and there was a compliicated story.
It wasn't until I was already writing Faithless that I realized Alyce's problems would actually become a trilogy.
HH: What can you tell us about the first two books in the series, Faithless and Careless? YS: Faithless introduces Alyce Kerr, a faith healer with a demonic problem. It's also when she reconnects with her ex- fiancé, and finds out that she's not the only one keeping secrets.
Careless continues their struggle to completely sever the demon from Alyce because he's trying to weave his way back into her. But when they seek the help of a demonologist, she only complicates things. Which leads to Boundless.
HH: What can you tell us about how Boundless will wrap it up? YS: The only thing I can tell you is that Alyce will find a solution to her Buer-induced problem, but will unfortunately pick up other baggage along the way.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? YS: I have another novella coming soon from Damnation Books. This one is called Damaged and is a stand-alone story about an aspiring writer who's stuck in a bad marriage and has to come to terms with a scary problem inside her basement.
I also have a novel coming from Eternal Press. This one is called Shade Of Grey and is a contemporary, romantic Sci-Fi about a woman trying to outrun an organization and an alien threat from catching up with her. It deals with conspiracy theories, men in black, UFOs, abductions, and Grey aliens.
I've also got the first novel in my urban fantasy series, The Hidden, contracted with ImaJinn Books coming out sometime this year. The first book is called Unnatural.
So there are a few things on the horizon, and I'm always working on something new.
HH: What do you think today's readers are looking for and how do you fill that demand in your writing? YS: I think readers enjoy a variety of genres with varied and interesting characters. I know that as a reader, there's nothing better than picking up a book that grabs me from the beginning and keeps me interested until the very end. And then leaves me wanting more after I've finished it.
I write the best stories I can, the ones that hound my brain so much I've got no choice but to share them. And hope that others find a connection with them too.
HH: What you most like to accomplish in your writing career? YS: I'd love to keep writing. Of course, I've got a dream of one day seeing my book/s on a bookshelf in my local bookstore, too. But my main goal has always been telling and sharing stories. I love doing that.
HH: What makes it all worth it to you as an author? YS: I love it when a story comes together so well that you can't help but wonder where it all comes from. The magic of storytelling is a very fulfilling thing, for me it's always been about telling stories. Of course, signing contracts and being given the opportunity to share my stories makes it all worthwhile. Oh, and hearing from readers is awesome!
HH: What are you reading right now? YS: Right now, I'm reading Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh. After really enjoying the first one, I couldn't wait to get started on this one. I'm halfway through, but have been distracted with my own novel this month. I'm working on the final draft of a novel that's due soon and have been spending every spare second I have on that. So my reading's taken a bit of a backseat this month. :( But I'll get back into it next month.
I've got a LOT of books on my TBR pile.
HH: Any big plans for the summer? YS: You know, because I live in Australia, I'm actually heading towards winter. I don't particularly like winter, so I'm a little bit envious of the Northern Hemisphere at the moment. lol. But to answer your question, my birthday's in July, so I suppose there's that to look forward to (or not!) and we've got tickets to watch my fave band in concert—30 Seconds to Mars are touring at the end of July, and II'm very excited about it. Can't wait to see them!
HH: Thank you!
