An Interview with Yolanda Sfetsos
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Yolanda, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Alex Wales: Promise. First, is the start of a new series? If so, can you tell us about it?

SF: Hi Holly, and thanks so much for having me here this month.

Yes, Promise is the first book in the Alex Wales Quartet. It's about a space courier called Alex Wales, and features her adventures through space. Along the way she uncovers a few secrets about herself, her past, and finds love.

In Promise, her ship crash lands on an unchartered planet and she stumbles on a strange society, but also meets a mysterious and very alluring native.

HH: What can you tell us about Alex Wales and why will readers identify with her?

YS: Alex is a very independent woman who likes to stay in control of her own destiny, but of course, there are many things she can't control and a whole bunch more she didn't expect. I think readers will identify with her because although she comes across as a tough girl, she's also a little lost and alone. They will also learn things about her at the same time as she does. There will be a lot of secrets revealed during the arc of her story.

HH: What can you tell us about Damon and why will readers love him?

YS: Damon is the hero in Promise, a native of the planet Eden, and ends up being Alex's love interest. Of course, she's not ready for a commitment, but Damon's a patient man. I think readers will like him because not only is he sexy, mysterious, protective, and alluring, but he's also kind-hearted and takes an instant liking in Alex. Oh, and did I mention he can use magic? Well, he does... in some very peculiar ways. ;)

HH: How did you go about creating the world their story takes place in?

YS: Alex Wales was the spark for this world. I knew she was a space courier, and I also knew that she was going to crash land on a mysterious planet and stumble on a seemingly utopian society with some secrets. I also knew she would end up getting the blame for some murders that start after she arrived on this planet... so after I wrote all of that down, I started to branch out and think about the galaxy this story would be set in.

It's a fictional galaxy with many habitable planets, space stations, and space ports, where living is rough for most, including the heroine. There's also magic, and shapeshifters. I came up with a lot of the world building before writing Promise, but find that new things come up even now. As I write more instalments, I expect to find some new details that need more thought.

It's a lot of fun!

HH: What else do you have in the works?

YS: I've recently finished the first draft of the second Alex Wales story, but I'm not sure when I'll have time to revise and submit it. I've got several edits coming my way. I also recently signed two new contracts with Samhain Publishing -- the second Recast book will be released next year, as well as the first book in an urban fantasy series I've got planned.

Plus I'll be working on a bunch of sequels for both of those series. I've always got something on my to-do list.

HH: What do you enjoy most about being a romance reader?

YS: I enjoy the spark between the characters. I love it when the heroine and hero not only find each other, but hold on to one another. They might suffer through some hard times and plenty of obstacles, but if they're meant to be together, they ride it out to the end. And that's what I like, going through the hard and happy times with them, until they reach their HEA or HFN.

HH: Do you own an ebook reader or read on an electronic device? If so, what?

YS: Yes! I have a Kindle 3, and I absolutely love it. I seriously love it. A lot.

HH: As a romance reader, what sort of stories do you personally prefer?

YS: I like reading in a variety of genres, but have to admit that urban fantasy is my favourite because it encompasses so much of what I enjoy in stories -- romance, horror, paranoormal creatures, supernatural situations, high, lows... Besides, I have to admit that I'm a sucker for a love triangle.

HH: What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

YS: Right now, because it's so cold around here, I have to admit that my guilty pleasure at night is to have a nice, hot cup of vanilla coffee, and a Tim Tam (or two).

HH: Any vacation or appearance plans this summer?

YS: Here in Australia, it's actually winter so I'm not really getting out much. I do go for daily walks, regardless of the weather, but other than that I'm mostly at home trying to keep warm and either reading or writing the days away.

HH: Thank you!
