A hidden evil stalks the city...

Ari Calin refuses to believe her human friend Eddie murdered a vampire -- in spite of his confession. Her human partner Ryan thinks the case is a slam dunk, even though there’s no weapon and no witnesses, but
Ari’s not about to let her friend take the rap without finding out more.

When Ari attends a charity event on the arm of a handsome werewolf, she finds someone she never
expected to see again -- Andreas De Luca, the charismatic vampire she used to date. When their eyes meet across the room, memories come rushing back. His kiss, his touch, a savage death... and a terrifying
magical bond. A reconnection is the last thing she wants. Only by staying away and forgetting Andreas can she hope to avoid the Legend of Ramora.

An Interview with Ally Shields
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Ally, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Your featured book is Fire Within and is part of your Guardian Witch series. What can you tell us about the series and where you got the idea for it?

AS: Ari Calin is from a long bloodline of witches. Once every century or so, a witch is born with the birthmark of the crescent moon on her ankle which designates her as a future Guardian, an Otherworld cop. In book one, Ari has just become a fully sworn Guardian at the age of twenty-three, and we meet her just prior to her first murder investigation.

The idea for the series grew out of my love for mysteries and a fascination with paranormal stories. I simply wove the mystery into an urban fantasy world and then had to figure out all the things that would be different.

HH: What can you tell us about Awakening the Fire and how it kicked off the series?

AS: Book one introduces most of the major characters, the world, the setting, and the beginning of two major storylines that will run throughout the series. Each book will have a framework of crime-solving and/or rescue.

HH: How does Fire Within continue it?

AS: In book one we learned about some long-standing vampire feuds, and a romantic line was introduced. While the mystery in Fire Within involves new crimes, those two on-going storylines are also advanced. As with most series, you will see Ari grow and change a little with each book.

I added some new pieces of world building, especially the OFR (Otherworld Forensic & Research lab), which is the Otherworld counterpart of CSI.

HH: What do you like best about Ari and why will readers be cheering for her?

AS: Ari is strong, courageous and fiercely loyal, and yet she is vulnerable, especially when it comes to her personal life. She's young, inexperienced in life, and it shows. Her maturity and witch powers are still growing.

HH: What do you like best about Andreas and why will readers love him?

AS: His gorgeous eyes. Seriously, he's an Italian aristocrat. What's not to like? But he is also aloof, mysterious. I think it makes him intriguing. Occasionally, we see little cracks in his armor, especially around Ari, that make him even more appealing.

HH: What do you have in store for lucky readers?

AS: Burning Both Ends, book 3, is scheduled for release on June 14, 2013. Book 4, Blood & Fire, is already written with an anticipated fall release, and I've started writing Book 5.

HH: What do you enjoy most about being an author?

AS: The first draft. My characters always surprise me by doing or saying something I didn't expect.

HH: How has your writing career changed since you started out?

AS: The big change is I'm published! :) I have learned so much in the last five years about writing, rewriting, editing and marketing. It's all a process, but mostly it takes practice and lots of it.

HH: What do you think has been the most positive change?

AS: I've actually learned to enjoy the re-writing, revisions and editing. I know now that this is the point where my book comes to life. During this process I add all the little details and specific words that allow the reader to "see" the scenes I had in my head.

HH: Where can readers find you online?

AS: I can be reached through any of the following (but I'm on Twitter several times a day!):
