But the man who crosses her threshold isn't there to sign on the dotted line—he's the bearer of news bad enough to shake the very foundation of her life. A life built around a fierce sense of independence, born of a violent incident from her past.
Mac is no stranger to heartache. His career in social work immerses him in it, plus he has his own share of skeletons rattling around in his closet. His attempts to comfort Jennifer bring the two of them closer together. With each touch, she becomes harder to resist. Mac's body's response would try the patience of a saint. And a saint he's not.
Baring her soul isn't high on her list, but she finds herself opening up to Mac in ways that make it hard to hold him at arm's length. And as her life spins out of control, their growing passion becomes the only tangible thing she can cling to...

An Interview with Samantha Sommersby
By Holly Hewson for The Romance StudioHH: Samantha, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, Shelter From the Storm. SS: Shelter From the Storm is an emotional and sometimes gritty modern day love story. It's not the perfect boy meets girl scenario. There are few perfect boys and girls out there. This book is homage to all of those couples that weren't raised in ideal families, who don't have glamorous lives or pristine pasts—yet find love, manage to sustain it despite the curve balls in life, and get their happily-ever-after. Here's the blurb...
Not everyone has to go looking for love...for a lucky few, love finds them.
In any other circumstance, Jennifer Jones's first meeting with Maclain Moore would have been called serendipity, a happy coincidence. She's looking for a new roommate; he's looking for a place to live. It doesn't hurt that he's sexy as hell, either.
But the man who crosses her threshold isn't there to sign on the dotted line—he's the bearer of news bad enough to shake the very foundation of her life. A life built around a fierce sense of independence, born of a violent incident from her past.

HH: What starts off as happy coincidence is really the beginning of something life-altering for your heroine. Where did you get the idea for this amazing story? SS: In general I have a belief that the simplest of decisions can result in massive, even life-altering consequences. You'll find that theme throughout many of my stories, especially my urban fantasy novels. Shelter of the Storm is really about resiliency and about the fact that it's never too let to make decisions that can change your path.
During my career as a psychotherapist I worked with my share of abused woman and children. I've seen the damage that occurs when trust is so utterly violated. But I've also seen how strong woman can be. I wanted to write a story about that journey, the journey from betrayal to believing in love again.
HH: Your books, in my opinion, are so filled with strong emotion, which is why I'm a loyal reader. <g> What's the key, to you, for invoking such emotion in your stories? SS: I try to keep things real, to make my characters believable. When you're writing about characters with a dark past, you have to sometimes go to a dark place. Glossing over it, refusing to feel it, would seem almost disrespectful.
HH: What do you like best about these two special characters and how do you relate to each of them? SS: Mac, the hero, is a social worker. He works with abused children. That's what my husband does and like my husband Mac is loving, accepting, and an amazing listener.
I adore Jennifer's strength and her determination. She's a hard worker and no matter what life throws her way, she refuses to give up. That's something I admire a great deal and I've know several women during my life who have shared that trait.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? SS: Right now I'm working on a YA urban fantasy novel. I plan to finish it by the end of the summer. It's the first in a series, so I'll need to decide after that whether to go on to book 2, or back to my Forbidden series. Unfortunately, I'm not one of these authors who can working on multiple projects at the very same time.
HH: What do you think today's readers are looking for and how do you fill that demand in your writing? SS: I think readers are looking for books that are both entertaining and challenging. Something that will offer a measure of escape, yet still deals with compelling and even edgy themes. Or...maybe that's just what I look for in a book and what I like to write.
HH: What would you most like to accomplish in your writing career? SS: Hmm. At the moment that would be finishing my YA novel and having it published. My sixteen year old has wanted me to write this story for a long time. Now that I've fulfilled all of my current contractual obligations I've jumped in with both feet. My son has volunteered to act as my research assistance this summer and to put together my series bible. We're both outrageously excited about the project.
HH: What makes it all worth it to you as an author? SS: Anytime someone say's they've connected with one of my stories I'm over the moon for days.
HH: What are you reading right now? SS: I'm reading Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris -- the first Harper Connelly mystery -- on my iPad. I've already purchased the next one.
HH: Any big plans for the summer? SS: We'll be doing quite a bit of travel this summer. My Forbidden series is being released in print starting in July, so I'll be working to promote it. I'll be in San Francisco for a few days, then in San Diego for Comic-Con. In August it will be back up to northern California, followed by some time in New Mexico before Dragon*Con for Labor Day weekend. As I know more details, I'll be posting them in the event section of my website: www.samanthasommersby.com
HH: Thank you!
