An Interview with Terry Spear
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Terry, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is The Dark Fae and it is the first in your World of Fae series. What can you tell us about the series first?
TS: Sure, thanks so much for having me here today at The Romance Studio! Have you ever had body parts fall asleep? You know, arm goes to sleep? Foot? Hand? Ever trip over your own feet because there’s nothing else you can blame the stumble on? Ever get a strange hot prickling all over your skin that you can’t account for? It’s the fae. They’re the world’s oldest tricksters. They have absolutely no regard for humans. They move through our world, but have their own old-world civilization also. Instead of getting out of our way, they can walk right through us, causing body parts to numb or our skin to prickle. Missing something that you know you put somewhere -- always put it there -- blame it on the fae. They’ll move our stuff, hide things, and you’ll think you’re losing your mind. So I thought it was time to tell on them!
HH: How does The Dark Fae kick off the series?
TS: Alicia is minding her own business, having a grand time at a beach in South Padre Island with her girlfriend, Cassie, when a fae hits on Cassie. Alicia knows just what he is and how he’ll break her heart. And she’s not about to let that happen. The problem is that no human should be able to see the fae for what they are. Fae seers are hunted down and killed, so said her father, who abandoned her mother when she was a child. So what is she to do? Save her friend from a broken heart? Or pretend she doesn’t know just what the fae is to ensure they don’t terminate Alicia -- a fae seer?
HH: What can you tell us about the books that continue it?
TS: In each of the fae stories, more of the characters in the world will be revealed, including other kingdoms, most that aren’t on really great terms. You know. Just like in the human world. The books are stand-alone titles so that anyone can pick them up out of order and not be completely lost. From assassin fae to winged fae, their kind love to interfere with the humans in our world, but they have all kinds of trouble in their own world also.
HH: What will readers like about Alicia and why will they relate to her?
TS: She’s spunky, she’s protective and loyal, and she’s not about to take any crap from the fae! If only we could all deal with them like she can!
HH: What can you tell us about her dark fae and why will readers love him?
TS: He’s cocky and arrogant, and loveable. He knows he should terminate her for being able to see what he is, but he’s totally fascinated with her. When his mother, the queen, learns a fae seer exists, she wants the girl terminated, but he will do anything he can to protect Alicia.
HH: What benefit is there to you as an author in writing series?
TS: I had written only The Dark Fae and started another, which I lost in a computer crash. So I hadn’t written any others. Then I received so many requests for more of the world, that I began to write a series. It gives authors a chance to explore the world more and to introduce more characters into the world.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
TS: I have another medieval Highland romance I’m finishing up, Highland Rake, 3rd in the Highland series, Dragon Fae, 5th book in the fae series, another vampire YA in the Blood Moon Series, and Emerald Isle of Mists of the Scepter of Salvation fantasy series. I’m also finishing up A SEAL Wolf Christmas for Sourcebooks.
HH: Will you be making any appearances in the remainder of 2012?
TS: Probably locally in Waco, signings for Savage Hunger in October. Next year, I plan to attend Authors After Dark, RT, RWA, and Romcon.
HH: What are your plans for the fall at the moment?
TS: Writing! I have a huge blog tour beginning the end of Sept through all of October where a lucky commenter can win a copy of SAVAGE HUNGER. So I need to write about 40,000 words worth of guest blogs and interviews in the next two weeks.
HH: What would you most like to accomplish before year's end?
TS: I have two books on deadline, Jaguar Fever and A SEAL Wolf Christmas due soon. After that, I want to finish writing Dragon Fae, 5th book in the YA series, and Highland Rake, third book in the Highland medieval romance series. I’ll also be finishing up Tom’s story, Silence of the Wolf, the youngest Silver brother from Destiny of the Wolf.
HH: Thank you! Congratulations!
