An Interview with N.J. Walters
By Holly Hewson for The Romance StudioHH: N.J., thank you for talking with us at TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, Isaiah's Haven. NJ: Hi, Holly. It's great to be back at TRS. Isaiah's Haven in the second book in my Legacy series. This one features Isaiah Striker, who readers met in Alexandra's Legacy.
Isaiah Striker puts family first, the pack a distant second. Which is precisely the reason he's in noisy, crowded Chicago instead of alone in his beloved woods. One look at the owner of Haven nightclub, however, and a simple favor for his brother turns into something else entirely.

HH: This is the second book in your Legacy series for Samhain Publishing. Where did the idea of the series come from? NJ: I'd always wanted to write a werewolf book. I mean, what's not to love about strong, loyal alpha males with a little something extra. I started thinking about the female lead of Alexandra's Legacy. I knew immediately she was a half-breed werewolf blithely living life as a human until one fateful day when all that changes. The male lead, Joshua Striker, has brothers. lol That immediately got me thinking about the second book in the series. The wolf pack still has enemies and problems that need to be dealt with. I'm not sure how long this series will end up being. Probably five or six books.
HH: How does this story pick up where Alexandra's Legacy, Book 1, left off? NJ: Isaiah's Haven begins about a month after Alexandra's Legacy ends. Isaiah is actually back in Chicago, where Alexandra's book began, to do a favor for her and his brother. He has no idea a chance meeting is about to change his life forever. There are still purist werewolves running around trying to eliminate all the half-breeds. Plus there is the ever present threat from the paranormal bounty hunters. All these factors and more come into play in Isaiah's book.
HH: What can you tell us about the stories to come in this series? NJ: As I said, this series will probably be about five or six books long. I want to tell James's story. He's Alexandra's father and a fascinating alpha male. There are more twists and turns unfolding in Isaiah's book and the next one which will naturally lead into a fourth book. After that, I'll have to see where I'm going. I don't have it all plotted out yet, but I do know there are certain characters who are going to have their stories told before I'm done.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? NJ: This is shaping up to be a busy month. I have the release of Isaiah's Haven on August 3rd from Samhain Publishing. Then on August 20th, Out of Shadows, the next book in my paranormal Shadow Ryder series is releasing from Ellora's Cave. I love writing about these immortal, shape-shifting warriors.
In September, Alexandra's Legacy will be releasing in print. In October, A Touch of Magick is being released from Samhain Publishing. It's the first book in my new paranormal trilogy-Spells, Secrets and Seductions.
HH: What do you think today's readers are looking for in the romance genre? NJ: One of the most exciting things about writing romance today is that readers are very open. I love writing contemporary romance as well as paranormals. In the past year I've released a western contemporary (Lassoing Lara), a time-travel/ménage a trios (Embroidered Fantasies), a werewolf book (Alexandra's Legacy), and a futuristic trilogy (Project Alpha-Embracing Silence, Have Mercy and Sweet Charity).
As a writer, it keeps things interesting. I can stretch my boundaries and try something new, and I can also continue to write in genres I love knowing readers will give them all a try.
HH: What changes do you see coming in the genre and how will it affect you? NJ: The romance genre is always changing and expanding. That's what makes it such an exciting field for writers. I think the historical romance will come around again. I know, I love reading them. I also think paranormals are here to stay, which is great for me as I love reading and writing them.
As to how it will affect me, I'm not sure. I've always written what I wanted and worried about finding it a home later. I can't write any other way.
HH: What do you enjoy most about being a writer? NJ: Working from home. Seriously, I get to create worlds and characters that I love all from the comfort of my own home. I can work any hour of the day or night, whatever works for me. I can work in my sweatpants and slippers. Life is good!
HH: Do you read print books, ebooks, or both? NJ: I read both. There are series I have on my "keeper" shelf that I started in print so I continue to buy them in print. I also buy ebooks. I think most readers are like me-they don't care how they get their books as long as they get them. I like the feel of holding a print book, but I also love the convenience of an ebook reader. I went on vacation with 80 books loaded on my reader and stashed it in my purse. I couldn't pack all those print books in my suitcase.
HH: Any big plans for the fall? NJ: I hope to get at least two new books written this fall, maybe even three if one of them is a novella. I have my new release in October and I may even have another new book releasing in the fall. It's too soon to have a date, but there's a good possibility. So watch for it!
