About Jennifer Haymore

Jennifer Haymore grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, where she surfed, learned how to fly airplanes, raced bicycles, and developed a love for sailing. She was an avid reader and completely destroyed her eyesight by sneaking a flashlight under her covers and reading far into the nights — making her mother wonder why on earth she couldn’t get up for school in the mornings…

Jennifer holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree in Education from UCLA. Before she became a full-time writer she held various jobs from bookselling to teaching inner-city children to playing bit roles in soap operas.

You can find Jennifer in Southern California trying to talk her husband into yet another trip to England, helping her three children with homework while brainstorming a new five-minute dinner menu, or crouched in a corner of the local bookstore writing her next novel.

HH: Thanks for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, A Hint of Wicked.

JH: Thanks for having me here!

A Hint of Wicked is a sexy Regency romance about a woman who lost her husband to war and remarries seven years later, only to have her first husband return. Here’s the blurb:

HH: Your heroine must choose between two men she loves. Where did you get the idea for this sizzling historical?

JH: The core idea for A Hint of Wicked was my husband’s -- I use him as a sounding board and a brainstorming partner all the time. The story, however, has developed quite a bit from his original “vision,” which was of an enraged husband catching his mourning wife in bed with another man. I latched on to that scenario and ran with it…but I don’t think I ran in the same direction he envisioned for the story! I guess that’s my prerogative as the writer. . .

HH: How did you choose your setting for this story?

JH: I’ve always loved European historicals, specifically those that take place in England. I’m an American, but my family’s roots are in England, and I’ve always felt a special bond to the place. I love going there, I love visiting the areas where my family lived before immigrating to the USA, and I love the history that you can find around just about every corner in England. Since I love reading Regency romances and visiting London, the Regency London setting followed naturally from there.

HH: What do you like best about Sophie and how do you relate to her?

JH: I like that she’s a quietly strong heroine. She kicks a**, but not in a physical way! I think (I hope!) that readers will see her as an example of how historical women could show a great deal of strength despite their inferior position in society.

HH: What sort of research was require to bring this work so wonderfully to life?

JH: I am addicted to Google books (www.books.google.com). There’s nothing quite like a source written in the same time period you’re writing in. I now have an extensive, organized Google books library filled with books written in the early 19th century about everything from medicine to fashion to travel and architecture and cooking. The cure for opium overdose in A HINT OF WICKED is taken from these texts! Along with Google books, I make use of published historical texts on the period, Regency & other historical websites, horse experts, and fellow members of the Beau Monde chapter of Romance Writers of America, many of whom are experts on the period.

The most historically complex aspect of A HINT OF WICKED was the legal ramifications of a woman (an aristocratic woman, who’d be treated rather differently than a commoner) being married to two men at once. The English courts were extremely complicated and very fluid during this time period, marriage laws went through radical changes about ten years later, and there weren’t any exact precedents for this situation. I bought books on the topic of historical marriage, separation and divorce in England, and I contacted legal experts for advice. Still, it was a tremendous challenge to work it out.

HH: What else do you have coming up for lucky readers?

JH: A TOUCH OF SCANDAL, the sequel to A HINT OF WICKED, will be released in April, 2009.

HH: What's your favorite part of the creative process in writing?

JH: My favorite part of writing is finishing. There is nothing like writing “the end” and feeling that amazing sense of accomplishment I always feel at having written an entire book.

HH: What challenges do you face at this point in your career?

JH: I’m such a newbie, I think my biggest challenge is for readers to recognize my name. I’m working on that as much as I possibly can, though!

HH: What are you reading now?

JH: I’m rereading Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.

HH: What are your plans for the summer?

JH: It’s going to be a busy summer. My son is on two baseball travel teams, so we’re going to be doing the baseball tournament thing most weekends. I have an upcoming deadline for a book, edits, and I’m gearing up to start the next book to follow A TOUCH OF SCANDAL. I’m really looking forward to getting to meet & interact with other writers at the Romance Writer’s of America annual conference in Washington, D.C. in July.

HH: Thank you!
