About Anne Krist

It's a little known secret (until now), but Anne Krist, writer of romances, mysteries and women's fiction, is the "sweet" sibling in her family. Her saucy sister, Dee S. Knight, writes naughty, sexy stories for Liquid Silver Books, Whispers Publishing, Samhain Publishing and Siren-BookStrand. Anne can't talk about Dee without blushing; Dee doesn't mention Anne's name without a smirk. Family dinners are quite interesting.

An Interview with Anne Krist
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Anne, thank you for talking with us a TRS. Please tell us about your featured book Burning Bridges.

AK: Holly, TRS is one of my favorite places to be! Thanks so much for inviting me back.

Burning Bridges is a book of my heart. I've been thrilled with the reviews and also with the comments I've received from readers.

I'd wanted to write a book that had to do with Vietnam for quite awhile before Burning Bridges came to pass, but it wasn't until I visited my mom in Virginia that I formulated the idea. The story of love lost, found and lost again features two stubborn people who are a little too quick to burn bridges.

HH: A bag of mail hidden sets in motion a chain events that will alter lives forever. Where did you get the idea for this amazing story?

AK: I heard a news story about bags of mail a mail carrier had stuck in his back shed. They lay there behind lawn mowers and tools for decades. I wondered how lives had been changed due to those letters not being delivered and the story took shape on the drive home from Virginia. A month later, Burning Bridges was finished.

HH: As an author, what's it like to help your protagonist put her life back together after it's been quite effectively been blown apart?

AK: Very cathartic. We've all been in situations where fate turned things upside down and life had to be viewed from a new perspective. This is what happens to Sara. I think I let her use a few techniques I've had to employ over the years. =)

HH: Did you drawn on any personal experience for this story?

AK: Well, Sara meets her sailor boy in Virginia Beach, so it was fun reminiscing about when we lived there. Jack and I first met in Virginia Beach, too, and in fact skipped a school event once to walk the Sandbridge shore as Sara and Paul do. My dad was a career Navy man, as hers was, and he felt the same about my dating sailors as hers, lol. Those experiences were easy to draw from. Most of the book is set in Beaufort, South Carolina, which I visited a couple of times and fell in love with. The people there are so friendly and the town so beautiful, it was a pleasure to use it as a book location. I want to set more books in Beaufort just so I have a good excuse to go back.

HH: What can readers look forward to from you next?

AK: Right now I'm working on a series which I hope to have ready for submission by the end of the summer. The first story deals with dyslexia, which is something my sweetheart has battled all his life. It's a poignant yet funny story that I hope readers will enjoy.

For those who like erotic romance in addition to mainstream, my "twin," Dee S. Knight, is in two anthologies out this month. Please check her website www.deesknight.com to find out about The Fireman and the Ice Queen and The Elixir.

HH: What's your favorite type of story to write and why?

AK: I'm so perverse, when I'm writing as Dee, I long to write mainstream as Anne; when I'm in the middle of an Anne story, I keep wishing I could get back to erotic romance. Both have advantages. Certainly writing erotic romance is more freeing--bad words are allowed and any kind of suggestion can be turned into something sexy. But mainstream is much more my background, and most of what I envision as a good storyline is in the mainstream genre.

That said, I love to write paranormal and contemporary. I think historicals would be hard because I'd have to do so much research, and then I'd be distracted. I love research! I really enjoy romantic suspense, but it's a hard balance to get right.

HH: What's your favorite part of the creative process in writing?

AK: It's weird maybe, but I enjoy editing, whether it's my own, after my critique partners get finished or after the publisher's editor is done. I like writing the original text, but tweaking to find new, improved ways of saying something is really fun.

HH: What challenges do you face at this point in your career?

AK: Oh, good question. I think like so many others, just finding (making) the time to write is really a challenge. In this economy, Jack and I are both working as much as possible, which sometimes leaves little time for sitting at the keyboard. So much of success depends on name recognition and one of the best ways to gain that is to keep producing books.

HH: What are you reading now?

AK: Other than the review books I have to finish, not too much. I stacked up my reviewing and I make myself get that out of the way each month before I treat myself to a pleasure read. David Baldacci has a new book out and I enjoy him, and my good friend Jasmine Haynes has a new book out this month (Fair Game), which I'll jump to read.

HH: What are your plans for the summer?

AK: Right now, I'm just hoping not to have to move, lol. I don't think we have any plans to be out and about this summer, though I'll probably take a run over to Iowa and visit my mom and aunt, as well as make some trips into the city (Chicago) for events.

Thanks so much for allowing me to share my news with your readers, Holly! In addition to visiting my website, I hope folks will stop at A Little Sisterly Advice http://alittlesisterlyadvice.blogspot.com to join in the fun Dee and I have. And feel free to write me at anne@annekrist.com anytime!

HH: Thank you!
