An Interview with Rae Lori
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, A Kiss of Ashen Twilight.

RL: Thanks for having me! This is the first book in my series which focuses on the developing relationship between vampire Jace Archane and Aziza fairy Ariya as she escapes a threat from her world into the mortal realm. Jace is apart of the Ashen Twilight House, a network of Nightwalkers, Lycans and Shifter Elves, that have been living under mortal eyes for a few centuries now.

HH: A fairy and a vampire. Where did you get the idea for this beautiful, otherworldly story?

RL: I really liked the idea of light fantasy and dark fantasy coming together. And there weren't many vampire heroes with fairy heroines, most of the paranormals have human women and immortal males as heroes. I wanted to do a story that dealt completely with the other and I thought this would be a perfect couple to deal with. They have some clashes later on down the line with future books based on where they each came from and knowing how each character thought and saw things, it was fun to clash them together like that.

HH: What do you like best about Ariya and how do you relate to her?

RL: I liked her curiosity about new things and how she slowly takes everything in before acting. That's one thing we have in common. I tried to write her as a girl who had matured during her experience with the Ashen Twilight House. There are things with them that she had never encountered in her studies of humanity and some things she still learns (which causes a rift between her and Jace in the second book). But as she learns how the House differs from mortals and how Jace comes to care about her, she grows from it. From the beginning she's had the courage to speak her mind and to rule a nation although a part of her is still torn from the quick events of the attack.

HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this book and will there be more?

RL: I loved creating the world. It started out as just a story about Ariya and Jace and how a fairy would act to a vampire's world but as I explored the background of the characters, more story started surfacing and became more complex. As I explored a character's connection in the past, I soon found out his actions had sealed another connection with a future character later on. So the mythology grew as the conflicts did as well.

There's definitely more planned. Within the Shadows of Mortals is the second book in the Ashen Twilight series. That will explore some major conflicts as the House is discovered by humans, an old foe rises who may become a new ally against the humans and Ariya starts having doubts about her relationship with Jace due to some unsettling things she sees with him.

Inheritance of Ashes is the final chapter of the series which will deal with the aftermath of the mortal/immortals conflicts and a new world is built and laws are changed with the immortals in mind. There's still a lot of conflict between the two even though laws have accepted them.

HH: How did you get your start as a writer?

RL: I think it was something that's always been apart of me. I always loved writing stories to entertain myself and my classmates. I started out with screenplays, poems and short stories and I was really inspired by the movies I saw growing up as well as the books I read. So I think I've always sort of been a writing on a subconscious level since about 10 years old but only in my late teens did I really start getting serious about publishing my work. I learned a lot about the practices by submitting to editors. I sometimes I wish I had that fearlessness now but I definitely learned a lot.

HH: How did you learn your made the first sale?

RL: Hmm. I think it was via email on one of my submissions. I had sold to a few ezines when I was about 19 or so and the acceptances came through my inbox. I was really excited because I felt like a real writer. It wasn't until I started working with epubs and seeing my royalty checks did it really sink in that I was an author. It was an awesome feeling.

HH: How have things changed for you since then?

RL: I think one thing I noticed is that things have gone into circles a bit. When I was starting out as a teen, there were tons of ezines around some paying and some not but as the years went on and the focus grew on publishers and novels, smaller publications focusing on the shorter forms of fiction went away. Now with the economy and people looking for cheaper entertainment to create and consume, it's made a comeback. There are a lot of people looking for shorter forms of fiction to read on their cellphones and reader devices. There's also more opportunity for new readers trying to build an audience with the new media that is there now (and wasn't there when I started out writing). The larger markets may not be as open as they once were a few years ago but even though those doors are closed, there are still other ones opened for taking a similar yet different path.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

RL: There are some projects I would still love to get off the ground. I have some ideas for a young adult sort of fantasy/contemporary which explores the thin line between fiction and reality; a historical fiction novel based on a real yet not very well known figure; a few mystery romances (one paranormal) and of course the finishing works to my Cimmerian series and Ashen Twilight Series.

I've been published with small presses, digital presses and I'd love to try the large houses next (while I still can)!

HH: Are you attending any conferences or other events this year?

RL: I have plans to attend the first Killer Con later this September and I'll be making a few appearances in the virtual world of Second Life. I have a few live readings coming up in there and I'll also be teaching a novel writing class for new writers.

HH: What do you have coming up for lucky readers?

RL: I'm currently working on book 2 in my Ashen Twilight series called Within the Shadows of Mortals and book 3 is up next, Inheritance of Ashes. I've also contributed to the upcoming Paranormal Guide for Writers which is contracted with Dragon Moon Press. I'll be writing the World-building chapter. And of course I’ll be making some free and low cost reads available to my reads so keep an eye out at my website or feel free to sign up on my mailing list! http://www.raelori.com.

HH: Thank you!
