An Interview with Cheryl Dragon
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Cheryl, thank you for talking with us at The Rainbow Studio. Please tell us about your featured story, One Weekend.CD: One Weekend is about that favorite fantasy, friends to lovers. Tom and Gus have been friends since college and if it hasn't been one thing, it's been another guy! Tom is done waiting and takes One Weekend to prove it can work. Amazing sex is very convincing!
HH: Can two men have sex and stay friends? Where did you get the idea for Tom and Gus' story? CD: Somewhere between Family Guy & My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I'm serious!! On Family Guy Stewie one time pondered why men couldn't men just hang with other guys instead of having a wife. Brian explains it's called being gay. Then throw in that I live in Chicago suburbs and we have wonderful places like the restraurant in the Big Greek movie everywhere (seriously, I went to my first IHOP last year--you just don't do it when you can go Greek and get a great breakfast and lemon rice soup twenty-four hours a day!)...I'd always wanted to use that as a backdrop for a story. So Gus' family owns one. Those great Greek restaurants are an institution so it gave the story a certain grounding.
HH: What do you like best about each of these characters? CD: Tom is patient. He's been in love with Gus for years but didn't want to force things and ruin it. Gus is a romantic who puts his whole heart into everything he does, and then has his buddy Tom to lean on when he's recovering.
HH: You write both straight and gay romances. How are these writing experiences different for you? How are they the same? CD: A good love story is universal. Romance is thrill writers/readers get from the stories. The characters are what make them different. of course we can't control who we fall in love with so a man may get swept off his feet by another guy, I don't let limitations enter into it and the stories are more intense and emotional for it, I hope!
HH: What do you think women readers are looking for in m/m romance? CD: A glimpse into the world where women aren't around. Men being romantic and sexual with each other, of course, it's intense because the ideal of male (that we've been exposed in the media and such) is controlled and alpha, not affectionate. Being gay is a taboo. It breaks that taboo and they can still be alpha, we'll love them all!!
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
CD: My next release is Keeping It Interesting. A menage/experimental about a straight couple who have secrets about their desires. Can he admit he wants men too and not lose her??
The cover is super hot! http://www.total-e-bound.com/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=&P_ID=668.
If you could have every fantasy, would you do it? Would you do whatever your boyfriend wanted?
Facing their one year anniversary, DJ Jenny and club owner Mitch aren't your normal couple. They live in the LA club scene, but even their naughty fantasies would raise the eyebrows of the clientele. Their own limits are pushed when they confess their desires and make it happen.
Can they embrace each others' without ruining the love? From abduction to the bad school girl, they'll try them all!
Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of brief f/f intimacy, ménage or more sex and spanking.
HH: How do you feel you've grown as a writer since you started out? CD: I think I've gotten better about sorting out a good idea from a bad one. Sometimes I have a great piece of an idea but before I'd spend a lot of time trying to figure it out. I knew it was important but the time wasn't right. Now I keep a file of notes and the right pieces come together when the time is right. Some ideas may never make it out of the file, but I know where it is!
HH: What's a typical day like for you? CD: Day job, some writing/promotion, some tv, sleep.
Thrilling, I know. But the weekends have more writing :)
HH: What would we find in your to-be-read file? CD: Right now, I'm on a mystery kick. Of course trying to find time to read is hard. It always turns into writing time.
HH: Any new year's resolutions this year? CD: To have a better 2010! Writing-wise 2009 was great but I think everyone has some real challenges in life and I'm hoping 2010 will be happier and more balanced.
HH: Thank you!
