An Interview with Jamieson Wolf
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Jamieson, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, A Subtle Magic.JW: Hi there! Thanks so much for having me. I'm very excited to be here!
The Written Word Book Six: A Subtle Magic is about Northaniel and William Willowby...
Northaniel knows that Willowby must be healed in order to be ready for the battle that is to come. If he is to help Owen transition from mortal to God, Willowby must be freed of the demons that still plague him.
Taking Willowby deep into the forest, Northaniel does what he can to heal not only Willowby's spirit and body, but also Willowby's heart.
He will have to heal his own wounds too. When Willowby reveals his most painful secret, carried all of these years, the truth will change everything. And love with set them free.
For love, though subtle, is the most powerful magic there is...
HH: This is the sixth book in your Written Word series. Where did the idea for the series come from and what can you tell us about the first five books? JW: The series started with an idea. I had a visual image of Owen being able to see Jace. I knew that Jace was a Witch and that Owen was the only mortal that could see him. Beyond that, I had no idea.
I had long been wanting to write a book or a long series that focused on writing as a form of magic. I think every writer will identify with that. Writing really is a form of art or magic, something that lets the writer create.
Even better is when the spell of that creation, that written word, instils a bit of magic in a reader or makes them react with emotion. So I took the idea and ran with it.
I also wanted the series to be a combination of urban city meets urban fantasy. Here's hoping I've succeeded.
Here's a bit about each book in the series thus far:
The Written Word Book One: Witches
Owen has always been able to see the Witches.
Every year at Halloween, they appear for three days and then disappear. This year, however, is different. This year, something is hunting the Witches.
Jace, the only male Witch in existence, goes to Owen for help. Jace knows that there is a magic inside of Owen that can help them defeat the hunter.
He also knows that Owen has been hurt, that he must do what he can to heal Owen's heart, even if it means losing him.
Will their love have a chance to grow or will they become the hunted?
The Written Word Book Two: Silent Communication
Kendrick never planned on finding another immortal while trolling for sex in a local mall bathroom. But this is exactly what Kendrick does find in the form of Northaniel, a Weather Elemental.
Kendrick feels a moment of remorse; he knows in his heart that he loves Bartley. Hopefully, in the arms of another man, Kendrick can forget about him.
The two share a passionate embrace or two in the bathroom but are interrupted. In order to explore each other fully, they'll have to find more comfortable accommodations.
When they do, things really get electric.
The Written Word Book Three: Demons
Kendrick is a Shadow Demon, a being of darkness. As one of Crushing's former henchmen, he is now held captive by Bartley, a Demi-God and one of the protectors of the realms.
Bartley is afraid that Kendrick may escape and go to Crushing's aid once more. But there is more to Kendrick that frightens Bartley; like the growing attraction between them.
Bartley will have to deal with the demons of his past before he can give his heart to another. Kendrick will have to free his heart if he has any hope of saving the man he loves.
The Written Word Book Four: The Silence of Sound
No longer sure of himself, William Willowby feels alone.
His life changes when Sebastian finds him. Sebastian wants to help William Willowby heal. But this will be no ordinary healing. There are many ways to heal, many kinds of touch and all kinds of magic.
When the night is over, William Willowby will be a different man...
The Written Word Book Five: Ghosts
Owen Wolfe thought they were safe. He thought that the trouble had passed. He was wrong.
When Owen begins to see the souls of dead children walking the streets of Garden City, he knows that something terrible is coming.
Owen must learn something about himself. He is the subject of a prophecy, one who was foretold to protect The Realms and all who live within its magic.
Owen will have to depend on those around him, and his lover Jace, if he and the people he loves are to survive.
The final battle is about to begin...
HH: How does A Subtle Magic continue the series and will there be other stories? JW: Originally, it was only supposed to be a one off, just the first book. Then it was going to be a trilogy. Now it's going to be seven books with one long story arc and then five more with another story arch of their own.
In A Subtle Magic, the healing that Willowby first experiences in The Written Word Book Four: The Silence of Sound continues, this time with a more personal touch. I'm thrilled with this book, mostly because Willowby took me by surprise.
I had never intended for him to be a good guy. I had always envisioned him as Harold Crushing's lackey and nothing more. What I didn't count on was the character of William Willowby wanting his own story told.
He had his own book with The Silence of Sound and I never intended to have another book featuring him as a main character. But he's become a favourite of mine and I knew that his healing wasn't finished. So now Willowby and Northaniel come together, something readers have been waiting for!
A Subtle Magic also sets up the rest of the story for this first story arc which will end with The Written Word Book Seven: Necropolis.
HH: What do you like best about Northaniel and how do you relate to him? JW: I like that he's a take no prisoners kind of guy but in a nice way. He's the opposite of Willowby. I feel connected to both characters, both Willowby and Northaniel. At times I feel as if something is broken inside of me. But put me in front of a keyboard where I can write, and I do what I want and have confidence I don't have away from the computer.
I think I'm more like Northaniel than Willowby, but they are really two sides to the same coin.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? JW: Well I've started the seventh book in The Written Word Series titled Necropolis. This promises to be the longest and most intense yet. The plot has already gone completely different from what I envisioned, but that's a good thing.
There are also more Guidebooks coming. If you visit The Written Word Web Site at http://thewrittenword.synthasite.com you can download three free ebooks that are modeled after the books Owen has studied to become a storyteller.
,p>
There are two more Guidebooks to come as well as a Guide to the whole series. Expect the two remaining Guidebooks to come shortly and the ultimate guide to come out in 2011.
Also, I thought The Written Word Series was over. Thankfully, the Series will continue with The Elements. Five short books featuring the Five Elementals Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit. Where the first seven books cover one story arc, the next five will cover another story arc.
HH: What do you think today's readers are looking for and how do you fill that demand in your writing? JW: I'm going to answer this as a reader first, as I love to read almost as much as I love to write. What I look for in a story are a few things: great characters, a thrilling plot and sizzling hot passion.
When I delve into a story, I want to first fall in love with the people I'm reading about. I want to have my emotions pulled at, my heart strings plucked, over characters that seem more flesh and blood than ink on paper. And I want passion so hot it heats up the page.
As a writer, I usually write what I like. I try to write something that I would love to read. I don't censor myself when I'm writing and lose myself in the process, but ultimately I'm hoping that readers will connect to my books in some way.
My novels are always, fundamentally, about the characters. The place and setting could be anywhere. For me, if I don't care about the characters, my readers won't either. I think my books fill a need for characters that aren't cardboard cutouts; for plots that are thrilling and multi-layered.
At least I hope so!
HH: What are you most proud of in your writing career? JW: That's a hard question. I think, if I had to pick an answer, it's the fact that I am able to do what I love, regardless of the type of story that I'm telling. I have been told again and again to give up writing, to put away the stories, to find a real job.
I think for me, or for any author, persevering and realizing your dream, of ignoring the naysayers and that little voice of doubt that we all carry inside of us, is an incredible achievement.
Every time I get a new contract for a novel, every time I get a story published, every time I see one of my new book covers, it's another step closer to achieving my dream and never giving up on myself.
HH: What makes it all worth it to you as an author? JW: For me, it's hearing from readers.
I am stunned each time I receive an email from a reader who has loved one of my books enough to email me and tell me. I am always shocked that anyone reads my books. I know that sounds odd, but remember that little voice of self doubt I mentioned?
So when a reader writes to me and tells me how they reacted to a novel, or how much they were rooting for a particular character, that's bliss. Hearing from a reader who has not only read your work, but gotten it, well that's just nirvana, isn't it?
HH: Do you read print books, ebooks, or both? JW: Both! Most of my work is published in ebook format so I would be quite the snob if I didn't. But thankfully my brand new Sony eReader (thanks Mum!) makes reading ebooks that much easier.
For all those of you who are like me and are "book purists", who love printed books, don't worry. Reading on an eReader will never replace real books, but it is kind of lovely carrying a library in the palm of your hand, isn't it?
HH: Any big plans for the summer? JW: You bet! I turn 32 this summer (August 22nd, in case you're wondering).
I'm also working on my first gay steampunk romance that has to be turned in by the end of August, so I'm working hard on that. I'm also working on edits for my memoir that's coming out later this year and putting the final touches on a few plot twists for a few other novels I'm writing.
More than anything, I'm looking forward to my idea of bliss: a beer, a good book and a patio.
HH: Thank you!
