Dark Desires
Brandon is one of the Brethren, an ancient clan of ruthless vampires. Like other Brethren families, the Nobles have accumulated great wealth and prestige, never marrying outside their kin, never leaving the isolated Kentucky farmlands where they live, undetected, among their prey. Horrified by his birthright, Brandon shunned the ritual of the first kill, earning the Brethren’s lasting wrath. But the exhilarating passion he and Angelina share rouses the primitive impulses he has tried so hard to deny. And even if Brandon can protect Angelina from his enemies, can he save her from his own dark thirst?

A note from Sara...
As a token of appreciation to my readers, I offer three completely free ebooks on my website (www.sarareinke.com). The first, "Heart's Ransom" is a novel-length historical romance about a young woman abducted by pirates hellbent on revenge against her father. In the second, the paranormal thriller novella "Resurrection," Jay Frances can resurrect the dead, but when his abilities force him to cross paths with a deranged serial killer, all hell is about to be raised. And in "Eye of the Storm," the sequel to "Resurrection," Paul Frances has made a living hunting down serial killers. But when he starts having nightmares, he begins to doubt his sanity -- and his innocence in a series of sadistic murders. Has the monster hunter become a monster himself?
An Interview with Sara Reinke
By Holly Hewson for The Romance StudioHH: Sara, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured work, Dark Thirst. SR: Hi, Holly! Thanks for having me. It's always a pleasure! :) Dark Thirst is a vampire romance available now in mass market paperback from Zebra for $3.99. In it, Brandon Noble is one of the Brethren, an ancient sect of ruthless vampires. Horrified by his birthright, he shuns the ritual of the first kill, earning the Brethren's wrath. When he runs away and falls in love with a human named Angelina -- forbidden among the Brethren -- his fate is sealed. Can Brandon protect Angelina from his enemies and his own dark thirst?
HH: This is the first story in the Brethren Series. What can you tell us about how this series came about? SR: The idea for the series originated when a group of friends and I decided to try our hands at making our own graphic novel comic books a decade or so ago. "Dark Thirst" was my idea, based on my having grown up in the bluegrass region of Kentucky and often wondering about the people who lived on the enormous, isolated thoroughbred horse farms you find all over that area, The graphic novel never came to fruition, although I still have several pages I had sketched out somewhere in storage, but I thought the idea was original and unique enough to keep on the back burner of my mind, so to speak. In penning the first draft for Dark Thirst, I quickly realized the series potential for the characters and world, because I've been imagining them all for so long now, developing them in my head.
HH: How does Dark Thirst kick off your series? SR: Dark Thirst introduces readers to Brandon Noble, who is not only the hero of the book, but a character I anticipate will be a "bridge" of sorts from volume to volume, in that he will appear in every book if possible, and have a role of some significance to play in every installment's respective storylines. Dark Thirst takes you into the world of the Brethren vampires, all of whom are very much the antithesis of what "vampires" are supposed to be. They're a complicated and brutal race, one that lives in secret from humans, and it's Brandon's desperate determination to escape that sets in motion all of the events that follow in the series,
HH: What can you tell us about Dark Hunger which will be released in September? SR: Dark Hunger picks up almost immediately where Dark Thirst leaves off. Tessa Noble-Davenant will do anything to protect her twin brother, Brandon, even if that means traveling across the country with Rene Morin. A cynical, brooding, yet startlingly sexy vampire, Rene seems to take pleasure in finding fault with Tessa's every move. Despite this, a sensual attraction develops between the two, one to which neither can afford to succumb. Rene and Tessa are being followed, and a single misstep will put them at the mercy of forces more dark and powerful than they can ever imagine...
HH: Will there be other books? SR: I sure hope so, LOL. There are in my mind, in any case. I am currently pitching the next book in the series to my editor. (*fingers crossed*)
HH: Crossing our fingers too. <g> What's it like having such a critically acclaimed series released from Kensington/Zebra? SR: I don't know about the critically acclaimed part, but I do feel like the book has been very well received by readers and reviewers alike and that's definitely satisfying. Kensington has been a wonderful company to work with and their Zebra Debut program is absolutely a fantastic idea. The price is right, the distribtution is phenomenal and your books really get out there into bookstores and to readers. For authors like me who were still too new in the industry to have any sort of readership base, the Zebra Debut program is an unprecedented opportunity to build a following.
HH: You also work as an editor. Does that help you in your writing career? Does it pose challenges? SR: Actually, I don't work as an editor anymore, at least not for fiction. I did until early last year, working part-time for Samhain Publishing, which was an extremely rewarding experience, but also time consuming. I felt like I needed to focus my attention on my writing and thus, stopped editing. I miss it tremendously, because it's fascinating and fun to be a part of the business on that end of things, to feel like you're sharing your experience and knowledge to the benefit of other writers, as well as making new friends and helping fellow authors work their way up further along their individual ladders of success. I'm currently employed full time as a writer and editor for a regional travel publication, but journalism is a whole other animal apart from fiction and a full-time paycheck definitely helps to supplement my marketing budget, for example, LOL.
HH: What else can readers look forward to from you? SR: In addition to working on my pitch for the next Brethren book, I'm putting together a pitch to present to my agent for a "shifter" series. Like the Brethren did for vampires, I think this idea offers a new take on the old tried-and-true werewolf lore. I'm curious to see where the project takes me.
I'd also like to mention that I now have three free titles available for download in PDF format at my website, www.sarareinke.com -- "Heart's Ransom," a novel-length historical romance; "Resurrection," a novella-length paranormal thriller (which had been previously e-published) and the never-before-released category-length sequel to "Resurrection" called "Eye of the Storm."
HH: What do you enjoy reading? SR: Honestly, I seldom reader for pleasure. I have two small children, so much of my reading time is taken up with Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein and Elmo, LOL.
HH: You belong to several groups and organizations. What's your favorite way to interact with readers and peers? SR: Through TRS interviews, o'course! *wink* Honestly, I don't know that I have a specific favorite way because there are rewards to be had from any interaction with readers and peers, be it online or in person. I think there's a greater degree of intimacy in face-to-face meetings that is difficult to convey sometimes in online interactions, but at the same time, you can reach a much broader audience through the internet than you can in person; people from around the world with whom you might not otherwise ever get to speak.
Thanks again for this fantastic opportunity!
HH: Thank you!
